Victory dance at the Dome...finally.

Melbourne beat the woeful Phoenix 3-0 tonight at the Telstra Dome in front of over 25,000 fans.

Great crowd, and they were in full voice as the they made their way to Level One at the Dome where they sang and danced the night away.

And maybe it helped....

The Victory team, or maybe it was the increasing mobility of the Victory team with a willing forward runner in Nicky Ward.

No Grant Brebner, no Kevin Muscat in the Victory midfield and it seems to be working better.

Well, hullo, how hard was it to fix!

Great movement, great strikes and yes Nicky Ward scored. So did the born-again Carlos Hernandez. He still goes missing at times, but he is contributing more and more and it's great to see.

Canberra's Kaz Patafta scored a wonderful goal. When he hit it, it's hard to see how it could go in with keeper Glen Moss recovering to the nearpost. But Patafta's shot, hit with power and hit early, clearly surprised the keeper. Great goal.

The Phoenix flickered, but only when it was two nil.

Armed Elrich showed why David Beckham gets paid so much. Beckham can cross!

Elrich a one-time flying Socceroo is a talented winger, but he continues to show his inability to cross simple right footed crosses accurately.

Every week he seems to waste opportunities. At 26, you'd think a right winger could cross 70% or more with some accuracy. Too much to hope for?

Victory can wait to see how Newcastle go tomorrow, but they'll take some heart going into Asia with three wins, three good wins and a bit of entertainment.

You can only hope Ernie Merrick heeds the signs. A more mobile midfield, helping the one man show in Archie Thompson and the team starts to win.

It's not hard is it Ernie, just too late.

The tighest finish in World Sport..ever?

In England only two or three clubs can win the title. In Italy, Germany, Spain and Scotland it's the same. Big clubs, with big money. Manchester United, Celtic, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich. I've probably picked at least three national champions and there are still six months to go.

In Super 14, League and AFL .......

with a week or so to go the Minor Premiership is usually sorted, well sorted, with only the minor placings for the final series been squabbled over.

In the A-League there are two rounds to go.

If Newcastle Jets beat the Central Coast Mariners and Queensland Roar draw with Sydney FC, all four teams will be on 31 points with one game to play.

That's tight. 50% o all teams, albeit a small competition, still have a chance to win the Minor Premiership. And unlike other codes in Australia this isn't just about gaining the second chance in the final series. The Minor Premiership actually means something.

The winners get to play in the Asian Champions League. Some prize.

Expect big crowds again this weekend.

I'll be hoping for a four way tie going into the last round.

Has there ever been a tighter finish in any sport in the World?

The latest Futsal Champs: Men's Semi's. Women's first semi.

ACT Men downed the Victorians..comfortably tonight.
Quiet game, but the Vic's were well beaten, maybe 5-1!
ACT cruised to a three goal lead and were never really threatened.

Former Futsalroo Elliot Zwangobani celebrated beautifully in front of the home support.

And in the other Semi....

NSW's beat the Solomon Islands scoring the decisive goal in the last minute. 3-2 to last year's Champs.

But the Solomon's whose players are mainly just 17 were the team to watch.
Skill, pace and tricks, only poor finishing gave the laborious NSW's side the win.

The crowd picked up on the pace and flair of the Islanders who are preparing for the Oceania Championships. A win there and they are off to the World Cup in Brazil in October.

Who would bet against them. Not me! They have bundles of skill, play with tactical nous and will challenge Australia in years to come, if not sooner.

Women's First Semi.

The Matildas were watching from the stands as a Melissa Barbieri led Victorian side went down to a rampaging Jo Burgess inspired Queensland.

A great game this one. Barbieri saved, shot, hit the bar at one point, and generally amazed the crowd. Burgess, dragged, dummied and pounded the goal of her Matildas team mate.

Burgess was inspiring and made it look so so easy.

Queensland won. Score? I dunno. It was late, I was tired, it was hot and I had to go, but the Queenslanders deserved it, just.

A-League: Two rounds to go..imagine..

this weekend, if Newcastle Jets beat the Mariners

And Sydney and Queensland draw at Suncorp.....

We would have FOUR teams on 31 points with just one game to go. And the minor premiership and a place in Asia up for grabs.

Can you think of any other football championship where a league title, or minor premiership has ever had 50% of all clubs in the country with a strong chance of winning the Minor Premiership/League with just one gaem to go?

Matilda's want an A-League

Matilda's Star Sally Shipard has moved to Brisbane! She's back in training and back into Camp with the Matilda's this week.

The Matilda's want an A-League, they are looking forward to playing the USA and Canada and of course 2008 is Asian Cup time.

Sally Shipard writes.....

Well the year has begun and I have relocated to Brisbane. On the 1st of January my folks and I left the Nation’s Capital bound for Australia’s Sunshine State. I’m such a fan of hot weather, I will be able to attend university and the football is great-these factors all played a role in my decision to move up.

I’m living with a couple of other footballing buddies so it should be a lot of fun, hard work too though

Ok, so enough about me...this year for the Matildas...obviously not qualifying for the Olympics means the back-end of our year will be reasonably dull. Unless a national league gets up and running (fingers crossed). The first 6 months of this year we will be travelling to Canberra for AIS camps, supposedly we are lining up some internationals against America and Canada.

I’m not really sure where the games will be, hopefully in Australia to keep the ball rolling amongst the Aussie public.
We also have our AFC Championships which will be overseas in Asia mid-year; preparation for this tournament has commenced already with pre-season training at our National Training Centres (QAS,NSWIS etc).

We also have a camp this week at the AIS which will conclude on Sunday the 13th of January. It will be the first camp after the Christmas break. We will be kept very busy with training twice a day, nutrition lectures and immunisations.

It’s a good opportunity for the coaching staff to get an idea as to ‘where’ we all are. Over the Christmas break we were expected to be keeping active, so it should be interesting. I’m sure all the girls are in good shape

It’s going to be great to catch up; from most of the girls I have spoken to they are all looking forward to a busy year. A national league is on everyone’s mind!!!! It would not only be great for Women’s Football, I believe it would be a great boost for Australian Football. Let’s see what happens, exciting times...

bye

Futsal National Titles kick off with a Victorian win

Matilda's Keeper Melissa Barbieri is playing for Victoria in her first National Futsal Championships this week in Canberra.

More comment and photo's from the opening night below.

Victoria's Open Men's side kicked off the tournament with a pulsating 3-2 win over crowd favourites Solomon Islands.

Victoria raced to a 3-0 win in the opening match of the National Futsal Championships tonight in Canberra, but they despite the start they were in for a fright.

A send-off, early goals, and a great comeback from the Solomons left the Victorians hanging on 3-2 and suggests the Futsal Championships will once again be a great success.

The crowd booed the Victorian keeper as he threw the ball into the corner to waste precious time near the end, making sure the exciting Islanders, who may go to their first World Cup later this year in Rio, were defeated.....just.

Futsal talk was everywhere:
NSW Thunder are favourites in the men's league, Matildas stars Lisa De Vanna and Melissa Barbieri are certain starters for their States. Talk of a Futsal Club Asian Champions League and of course kids, boys and girls all set to do their best for their teams and States or Countries this week. Even A-League players possibly getting to play for the Futsalroos in the 2008 Asian Cup in May.

National Coach Scott Gilligan is looking to select his team for the KL5's in March. Senator Kate Lundy and Gary Humphries and a host of Futsalroo stars watched the opening ceremony and first game.

Should be a great week.

NSW Captain and Futsalroo Simon Keith with Futsalroo Coach and Legend Scott Gilligan

Men's Favourites: NSW Thunder. Will they win?

The Joe Simunic interview: Simunic for England!

Joe Simunic England bound?

Croatian International Joe Simunic joined us in the Nearpost studio last week. Sound Producer Loui Psihogius, Majura Soccer Club players Eilis Fitt and Hannah Janssens and Guest Analyst Rob Janssens during a break in production.

Here is part of our interview with Joe Simunic. You can get the rest on the podcast of last weeks show.

Read part one below.

Joe Simunic started his football journey when he was 3 or 4. His godfather bought him a ball. His father, who wasn't particularly interested in football, seeing his son's enjoyment with the ball took him down to Canberra Croatia, (now Canberra FC) and signed him up.

Joe went to St Monika's Primary School, Evatt and then Daramalan College at Dickson before Ron Smith asked him to trial at the AIS.

Even in his Primary School days he was playing for 6 or 7 hours with a ball!

Joe started with Ajax briefly, before moving to Melbourne Knights, Hamburg, and he now plays at Hertha Berlin in the Bundesliga, Germany.

Joe Simunic is a Croatian International, who has played at two World Cups, one European Championships and he's only 29.

How is your season going in Berlin Joe?

We've shown in our recent 0-0 draw against Bayern (Munich) that we have a good team. We have potential. For us mid-table this season would probably be a good result. We have a new coach and some new players. It takes time to get results.

We get an average 45,000 to our home games, if we were going better 55,000 would be possible.

Joe, you have three and a half years left on your Berlin contract. Is Germany the future for you?

I'd like to play in England. That's a goal of mine. Maybe in six months or a year it is definitely possible. I will probably get in trouble for saying this as I have three and a half years left on my contract but that is definitely a goal.

I'm a Celtic fan Joe, what about Scotland?

I'm a Celtic fan too, I wouldn't rule out Celtic or Rangers. They are both big clubs and I've seen some games in Scotland. But for me England would be perfect.

You're well known in England after the recent games for Croatia.

The game against England at Wembley was probably one of the biggest I have played in. We (Croatia) played England in a friendly in Ipswich a couple of years ago. Some of the English players refused to swap shirts. We used this to motivate us for that game.

We are a strong team. Anybody that beats England convincingly, 2-0 in Zagreb and 3-2 at Wembley is a strong side. We have some great players. Some good young players like Luka Modric, Vedran Corluka and Eduardo Da Silva. We also have some experienced players like myself, and a great coach in Slaven Bilic.

We have a great atmosphere and anything is possible for us at the Euro's. (Austria Switzerland 2008)

You're now 29, you've been a professional footballer for a long time. How do you keep yourself motivated?

I started out at Ajax on trial with Hayden Foxe (Perth Glory). But it was very hard, I did quite well but I was homesick.

I decided to get myself stronger physically and pyschologically so when I went back to Europe next time I would have a better chance to succeed.

I played in the National Soccer League with Melbourne Knights then signed for Hamburg at 19. It was very different culture. Very hard. I broke my fifth metatarsal four times in two years so it was very difficult start.

My father came over for the first few months. Having a close family is very important to me. They have helped me through the difficult times.

For me playing each week for Hertha Berlin is my job. You go to work and get your pay at the end of the month. I am a professional and always give 100%. I probably shouldn't see it like that, but that's how I see it. International football is full of passion.

To play for your country means a lot. When you put on that top, the passion and feeling you get is great. I will have some great memories when I look back on my career.

For me one of the biggest games to play is at the World Cup, it doesn't get any bigger than that. And that's why I was so disappointed to not make the second round in Germany.

I was glad Australia made it through, but I was very disappointed.

And those three yellow cards Joe, did you know?

I said for months after the World Cup that I didn't know, but I did. People will probably call me a cheat now. But it's up to the referee to enforce the rules, that's how I see it.

No worries Joe, because Australia won 2-2:)
It was a special night, a special game for many Australians and Croatians, how did you feel?

It was just another game. I spoke to Mark (Viduka) and Lucas (Neill) and Josip (Skoko) before the game. We just said let the best team win. But I was really disappointed to go out in the World Cup. But I was happy for Australia.

I watched Australia play Italy, the World Champions, and they were very unlucky to lose. I thought Australia played very well.

Australia football is often described as lacking in technical skills. how do you see it?

No, Australia should never hide before they play anyone. They should fear no-one. They have many players playing in the Premiership. I know many teams fear playing Croatia and Australia.

Most difficult opponent?

Wayne Rooney, he is always on the move that makes it very hard for defenders.

Also Christian Vieri (Italy) in Japan/Korea World Cup 2002. He was at the peak of his career and I didn't do to bad.

Most disappointing game?

England in Euro 2004 in Potugal. We lost 4-2. And the game in Germany against Australia as it meant we were out of the World Cup.

How do you relax away from football?

Golf and turn off my two mobile phones. I like to spend time with family.

You get the full interview on last week's podcast.

Melbourne Victory v Sydney FC in Futsal. Would you like to see that?

With the Futsal Champs about to kick off in Canberra one could be forgiven for thinking the FFA have forgotten the burgeoning indoor game.

No national league, no national women's team, no grassroots plan.

NSW have had a 17% increase in girl's futsal alone over each of the last few years, but little mention was given to the game in the recent Technical Report.

Will we see a Futsal National League in the future? The Queensland Roar v Newcastle Jets. In a Futsal stadium I reckon it would be great. Maybe even two teams from each club.

With an Asian Champions League expected to start this year and a women's invitational World Cup possibly starting in Rio at the men's World Cup in October it could be an exciting time for Australian Futsal

But the excitement doesn't seem to be coming from the FFA, unless you know different.

English laughing at Australians...and I don't like it.

Nicky Carle (Genclerbirligi, Turkey) to Bristol City for $1.3 million, David Carney (Sheff United, England) to Anderlecht or Bayern Munich for maybe $3million or $4 million.

Only six months ago these guys were A-League players.

Someone is making a lot of money out of cheap A-League and Australian Internationals and it's not former clubs Newcastle Jets and Sydney FC.

Socceroo and former Sydney FC star David Carney scored the only goal in Sheffield United's 1-0 win over Premier League Bolton Wanderers in the FA Cup overnight.

Carney has already turned down a $3 million dollar transfer to Belgium side Anderlecht and is waiting to see if reported $4 million interest from German giants Bayern Munich comes to anything.

It was only six months ago Carney was running around for Sydney FC.

Last seasons A-League Player of the Year and Newcastle Jets Tricky Nicky Carle has just moved from Turkish side Genclerbirligi to Bristol City (who?) after just six months. Transfer fee is $1.3 million.

So have these players improved in six months?

Not on your life.

Imagine what that money could do for the Newcastle Jets or Sydney FC.

If our players are going to leave, and clearly they are, then Australian clubs need to be able to increase the transfer fee.

Clubs should be able to use Nicky Carle and David Carney, both Socceroos, as an example of the standard of player in our league.

Nathan Burns, Bruce Djite, Danny Vukovic, Nikolai Topor-Stanley and co need to be signed to long-term deals then sold, if they must go, for a transfer fee somewhere significantly higher than the $50,000 Sydney were reported to get for Carney.

Come on Australia the English are taking us for a ride, and it hurts!

Roar silenced...at home.

Another big game in the A-League, a big home crowd 21,475 and the home team lose.

That's the story of the A-League this year. And that's the story of Queensland Roar v Melbourne Victory.

The Roar were missing key personnel in Craig Moore, Danny Tiatto and Liam Reddy and were not tight enough to keep out an increasingly confident Victory.

No surprise that Victory are looking more mobile more effective without the ageing Kevin Muscat and Grant Brebner in the midfield.

Everyone knew that bar yer man Ernie Merrick, but he does now. But it's too late for them you would think, but with Central Coast playing Newcastle next week and the Victory at home to Wellington it could yet go to the last day of the season.

The Roar blew it, although Frank Farina must have known what was coming with three key men out.

Carlos Hernandex created two wonderful goals for Archie Thompson and Danny Allsop. Marcinho scored a cracker for the Roar but the result was never really in doubt once the Victory scored.

Hernandez, the worst free-kick taker in the league, bar Cassio, blasted three wild and high, then lower, then almost. But his free-kicks are marginally better than his shooting. And he came with a reputation for free-kicks and shooting. He's crap at shooting. You know it, we all know it.

Spare a thought for Griffin McMaster the Roar keeper. He was composed, eloquent and used words not often heard from many footballers. All that in the interview after the game.

During it he looked nervous, conceded two good goals, ran into a post, but then made two absolutely sensational saves. Great to see another young Aussie making an impression in the A-League.

The Roar take on Sydney next week in a fight for a top two spot. Should be a cracker with another bumper crowd expected.

Away team to win? Maybe not. Maybe, just maybe Sydney's luck has run out! Although you wouldn't put it past the lads Tiatto and Moore to get sent-off on that night would you:)

Friday night Football: Oh no Sydney are joint top!

Australia won't be happy tonight.

The team most fans across the country seem to hate is Sydney FC.

Record crowds always seem to come out to watch them lose. But it rarely happens. In fact they haven't lost away this season.

And after tonight's 2-0 win in Wellington before 14,000 passionate Kiwi's the rest of the Australian football community will go to their beds seething that Sydney and John Kosmina are, for 24 hours, joint leaders of the A-League.

Great improvised goals from Terry McFlynn and Alex Brosque saw them home, but it was tight for a long time.

Who will stop Sydney now?

Futsal or Outdoor Football: FFA Which do you prefer?

With the National Futsal Championships about to start in Canberra next week thoughts in the Capital are turning to Indoor Football, or Futsal as it's known.

I'm biased. I love the outdoor stuff, but in my later years spent years playing futsal, and came to love it as I got older and slower.

And if you ask the kids, many, many, prefer indoor over the outdoor game.

Which do Football Federation Australia prefer?

The answer seems clear, and Futsal players will not be happy.

Clearly the Indoor version is second fiddle or even lower down the FFA ranks.

Before Futsal joined under the Football FFA umbrella, the Futsal organisation organised and ran camps and overseas trips for representative sides of all ages.

Today despite their increasing numbers their are far fewer official tournaments, overseas trips and training camps.

The Futsalroos are the men's national side. This year, they will play in the KL 5's in March, then the Asia Cup in Thailand in May.

They need to come in the top four of the Asia Cup to go to the World Cup in Brazil next year.

Camps to prepare? Nil.

Women's National Futsal side? Doesn't exist. Not anymore.

The FFA clearly have put their limited but now growing resources into the Socceroos firstly and now the Matildas.

And you may imagine how people within Futsal, who see this as their number one sport, must feel, when having been taken over by the FFA see their game bursting at the seams in terms of registrations, but getting a smaller and smaller piece of the financial pie, and perhaps more importantly, a smaller and smaller piece of the planning pie.

For five years the games were on SBS. Now there is nothing.

What is the future of Futsal?

And the FFA have gone Dutch thanks to Guus. We now have Rob Baan and Pim Verbeek, and the Dutch don't really value Futsal, certainly not like the Brazilians.

Come to think of it when did the last Ronaldhino come out of Holland?

Does this mean Futsal has little place in the FFA development pathway?

Futsal, so long the darling of SBS, popular in South America and belong, seems to be heading nowhere in Australia despite its popularity.

As outdoor football becomes a 10 month a year game what place is their for a National Futsal League, men and women's in the FFA'S plan?

What place for training camps, representative sides?

Quite simply the FFA can't have Futsal taking some of the next generation of A-League players. We've hardly got enough top footballers as it is.

In Thailand the professional futsal league play their players $1500 per month. The players train twice a day.

In Australia Futsal has been left behind as the FFA swallowed all the football codes, indoor and outdoor, men and women.

Any young person playing Futsal would be well within their rights to ask "What have you done for me lately FFA."

Where is my National League, International Friendlies, Tournaments, prospects for the future.

How does Futsal fit into the National (Dutch) Technical Plan?

Home Ground Advantage: Not in the A-League

It is a well known fact in football codes of all kinds, that home ground advantage is important.

Why else do Celtic (almost) always beat Man Utd, AC Milan, Benfica and the rest in the European Champions League at Celtic Park? Because they are lucky? Because they have better players? Most likely because they have home advantage.

Why have Arsenal won ten out of eleven home games this year but only four away?

In Spain, England, Germany and Italy the leaders have all got great home records.

Real Madrid 100%. Eleven straight wins.
Arsenal 90%+ Ten out of Eleven wins.
Bayern Munich 70% Seven wins out of ten, but no defeats.
Inter Milan 90%+ Ten out of Eleven wins.

But not in the A-League.

New leaders The Roar have a 4w 2D 3L. Less than 50% home wins and they are Australia's best.
The Mariners have a 4W 1D and 3L home record. 50% wins.

And even last year the Melbourne Victory. Remember them? They ran away with the league, but could only manage a 60% home win record.

And this year of 72 games played only 21 have resulted in home wins. Less than 30%!

Why is this so?

Joe Simunic talks to the Nearpost.

Joe talks about the night he got three yellow cards playing against Australia, why he chose to play for Croatia, how he's a proud Croatian and proud Australian. Who is the hardest player he's ever marked? And how a game against England in Ipswich motivated the whole Croatian team to knock England out of the Euro 2008.

Joe Simunic gave a fantastic interview. He gave up his last night in Australia to come and talk to us at the Nearpost. We had a ball. Thanks Joe!

Can Mariners salvage their season?

Ten goals against in two games.

It's not Championship material is it?

And I feel for the Mariners, they've worked hard to set the pace, got massive crowds to the last two games against Sydney and Melbourne, lose a great game to Sydney and get thrashed by Melbourne.

Who despite having Nicky Ward, the White Fred, have been decidely poor all season.

And they were poor last night. Just the Mariners were worse, so much worse.

Tony Vidmar, Damien Brown, and Alex Wilkinson all stood out. Pass-backs, tackles and marking were abysmal and the Victory who caused the Coast massive problems in their last came in Gosford, did the same again.

This time Nicky Ward released his forwards time and time again and the Victory look a different side at least away from home.

The Mariners could still come second or even third. Is there no justice in football?

But this game could have been 5-8. Victory missed sitter after sitter just after half-time and Aloisi and the entertaining and crowd favourite Matt Simon did likewise. If only Simon could score, what a player he could be.

Victory were gone at the 65 minute mark. Maybe that is why they have struggled all year. But last night they were too far ahead, even by their increasingly poor defensive standards.

A fantastic crowd for Gosford 18,500, a fantastic crowd for football. Mile Jedinak's strike got me out of my seat. Archie Thompson was ebullient. Tony Vidmar? One season too many?

And Matthew Trott the Mariners keeper? 160 minutes of football and 10 goals conceded.

My mate said he couldn't be blamed for this one, or that one, but at some point he has to save something.

If he could have saved one or even two in this game, bizarrely the Mariners could have salvaged something.

All to play for still. Danny Vukovic is back. Confidence will surely rise, and a nice visit to Wellington may help.

The Roar play Melbourne next and then Sydney. Watch those Brisbane fans pour into SunCorp now.

Victory is in sight!

Channel 7 anti-football award nomination 2007

Nominee: John Coomber....review of the year...guess who forgot Women's football, the Matilda's.

Don't know who I'm laughing with more, John Coombers year in review, or Spiros Zavos' description of the so-called brilliant round-up.

Matilda's boys! Women's football at the women's World Cup in China 2007. The biggest women's sporting tournament of the year. Bigger than the Netball, the Swimming put together, but then brilliant superb sports journo's like yourself would know that!

Over 35,000 crowd average at every game. Huge interest in Australia and in countries across the globe. Best achievement by the Matilda's ever.....and surprise surprise the boys didn't think it was worth a mention.

So I've nominated John for the www.nearpost.blogspot.com 2007 media anti-football awards of the year. Awarded to the Aussie journo who does his best to ignore the game.

Don't worry John you've no chance of winning, you've too much competition, but Spiros you could sneak up the list:)

Australians love to see Sydney FC play...just not in Sydney

or so it seems.

2007/08 season.
Adelaide v Sydney FC 25,000 record crowd
Central Coast v Sydney FC 17,500 record crowd

2006/07
Newcastle Jets v Sydney FC 24,000 record crowd
Queensland Roar v Sydney FC 32,000 record crowd
Melbourne Victory v Sydney FC 50,000 record crowd

Even when they played away at Telstra Stadium, against some unknown American side they pulled 80,000!

So maybe Sydney should announce they are playing Sydney FC this week. Can you imagine the rush for tickets at Aussie Stadium.

Mate, we hate Sydney I wanna see that lot thrashed!

Got a better idea how to get more people to a game in Sydney?

Ten things you won't see or hear in the A-League

A record crowd for football in Sydney.
Adam Biddle shoot with his right foot into an empty net.
Kristian Sarkies bending it like Beckham, or Cassio for that matter.
Ernie Merrick saying, "Victory, we're crap."
Bobby Petta playing two full matches in a row for Adelaide.
Lawrie McKinna saying, "We're a poor side but we're fit and we're top."
Juninho score.
Channel Nine saying, "Record crowds in Gosford, Adelaide this football is great!"
Carlos Hernandez scoring from outside the box with a pile driver.
Danny Tiatto asking the guy he's just maimed if he's alright.
Con Constantine saying, "Yep I wasted stacks of dosh on Mario, and Gary was right all along."

Feel free to add your own!

Sydney Breeze past Adelaide in front of record crowd

Another week another goal conceded for Sydney FC
Another week another game against 10 men for Sydney FC
Another week another win for Sydney FC.

But are Sydney any good...against 11 men?

The Crowd.

Absolutely fantastic to see 25,000 plus decked out in red at Adelaide Oval for football. And don't those Adelaide fans wear the colours. A great sight.

The Game.

Sydney started woeful...again. Easily outplayed last week in Gosford conceding two. In Adelaide, United were slow out of the blocks, maybe the heat, but Sydney were slower.

When Adelaide went 1 up through a Kristian Sarkies goal, Sydney were in disarray, and had been for some time.

Passes going astray from midfield. Little sight of Steve Corica or any of the forwards.

And both Tony Popovic and Mark Milligan were caught up field for the Adelaide break which Bobby Petta did his best to slow down to give the lads a chance to get back, but it didn't work as headless Chook Ruben Zadkovich collided with Clint Bolton and Sarkies slotted the loose ball

The Send-Off.

Ball over the top by Poppa, Alex Brosque caught it has to be said by Robbie Cornthwaite and the softest of soft red cards awarded by referee Matthew Breeze. It wouldn't have surprised me to see Alex Brosque get booked for milking it.

And suddenly Sydney were back in a game they had again looked second best in all night.

Game changed. Sydney slow men, Steve Corica, Poppa and Terry McFlynn were able to get more involved. The confidence of the team lifted immediately in direct proportion to the Adelaide side who seemed to lose the game in that one moment.

The future

Adelaide are gone surely, but if Bobby Petta can remain fit they may still sneak in the four. Every game is a Cup Final for them. But realistically they are out.

Sydney? Who knows? They still look ordinary very ordinary against eleven but who would bet against them.

Well I would:)

Highlights

Bobby Petta's performance. A joy in the forward line, away from the wing. Hope he stays fit.

Brendan Santalab's wonderful wonderful goal.

The red-shirted Adelaide crowd a record in South Australia and another great night to ponder for the future of our wee game in this country.

Record crowd for football in South Australia

Last season Melbourne Victory and Newcastle Jets produced record crowds.

Last night Adelaide hit 25,000 and earlier this season the Central Coast 17500 and Wellington over 14,000.

Regional centres getting record crowds.

And they will be back. Maybe not every week, but slowly but surely they will come.

Australia 2007 has been another very very promising year for football.

Best Mariners in Australia....to get another huge crowd

"It’s an exciting time of the year and you can really sense the buzz around town ahead of what will be another massive event at the Gosford Waterfront next Monday," said Mariners Executive Chairman Lyall Gorman.

"The message we’d like to send to patrons is very clear – you simply cannot arrive at Bluetongue Stadium after 4pm and expect to purchase your ticket without delay, such will be the volume of people in and around Gosford City."

It is going to be a great game. You can feel it. Mariners need the win, have a few injuries, but of course The Victory still have the firepower to upset any team. Honest, they do!

The Mariners have become the new Perth Glory of the old NSL, slowly slowly building a model all clubs outside the big three cities should/could follow.
