Peter Funnell talks FFA NTC Challenge and his interview this week is with Paul Penna, a very experienced sports psychologist. Why don’t we see more of their professional contribution in clubs, the Premier League, Capital Football’s HPP just to name few football opportunities?
The FFA NTC Challenge is underway and ACTAS is participating. It’s a terrific football treat this early in the year, its tense and there is plenty of football talented to amaze. This is the first activity for the FFA as it will be the first consolidated football competition in the a pivotal age group (15-16 years), in which we will see how well the New National Curriculum has been implemented. The games are tense and the coaching staff under a lot of technical scrutiny by the FFA’s Technical Development Committee. How will ACTAS be rated in this competition. Early games indicate that it seems unlikely to be scoring too many “Technical Points” for its style of play. Football West and South Australia are early standout performers, but that’s not a surprise. If it the new curriculum is not evident in the manner and style of play at this age, there is real cause for concern, early days or not! Hope they publish the full points scores for each team by game, so that we can see what the FFA thinks is happening at ACTAS and elsewhere. More to follow on this important football development event.
The interview this week is with Paul Penna, a very experienced sports psychologist. Why don’t we see more of their professional contribution in clubs, the Premier League, Capital Football’s HPP just to name few football opportunities? You don’t have to be an elite player to benefit from the integration of a sports psychologist into your football team’s efforts this season. Paul Penna has seem most of what there is to see where elite sports persons are concerned, he is practical and insightful. In this first part of his interview, he sets the scene and note his favourite saying when advising athletes of sports and levels – “swim in your lane”!

Every year the A-League is churning out new Aussie stars. This year is no different. There's more this year than any year in my view and a couple with real quality others with real potential.
Some like Mark Viduka, Brett Emerton and Ned Zelic will go straight from the domestic league to top European sides. Others like Nicky Carle will wander around China, England and Turkey maybe never really getting to a leading team.
Either way if you standout in the A-League at a young age you have a great chance to make it in the game, maybe a top overseas contract or maybe a Socceroos gig.
Here's the ones who have impressed this year so far, of those (mostly)who have made their entrance this year. And don't worry next year there'll be another load of young Aussies with the ball at their feet and a chance to dance. What a great time to be a young gun.
Definite Socceroos of the future in my lame view all other things, injuries, drugs, girls, AFL, agents, and a decent career path:
Mathew Leckie...when was the last really pacy exciting Aussie young forward actually see Kofi below.
Mitch Langerak....our next
Kofi Danning
Ben Kantarovski
Possible Socceroos
Tommy Oar
Todd Howarth (age?)
Made a strong impact but fair way to go yet to reach A-League standout level:
Chris Payne
Mate Dugandzic
Tando Velaphi
Anthony Juric (age?)
Sean Rooney
Michael Marrone (at 22 maybe a tad old...but you never know...think Jedinak)
Daniel Mullen
Scott Neville
Rhyan Grant
Anthony Golec
Adam Sarota

A-League is ramping up as the race is on for the finals spot and the first Asian Champions League spot.
We've got all the moves, news and views, quiz and commentary.
Why didn't Taj Minniecon's pass to Joel Porter get mentioned time and time again. Don't worry we didn't mention it either, maybe because he's not Brazilian, maybe because he's not called Dwight, Brosque or Bridge(s).
Pass of the season we reckon.
Anyway it's all here more football than you could ever want...and find out why Paddy's partner Amy called their first born Zara....it's always football on the nearpost innit!

Peter Funnell writes:
In this program we have a very close look at the ACT participation in the FFA’s Futsal Nationals......
just concluded here in the ACT. Capital Football did a terrific job organising the Nationals. How did we do, how can we get better and what are the pressures around developing Futsal in the ACT. And why are some of our very best football players being held back or electing not to represent the ACT at age at Nationals? And why did the Canberra Times give so little press coverage to the Nationals?
Just so that you have this in perspective, our Womens Youth Team won their final and are National champions. This is hotly contested group and women’s football and futsal is making terrific progress in the Act – some say better than the boys / mens! These are the ACT teams that campaigned their way through many round games to get a place in the Futsal Natinoals finals at the AIS last Friday;
U11 Girls Cobras
U15 Girls Cobras
Youth Womens Cobras
Open Womens Cobras
U16 Boys Cobras
Youth Mens Cobras
Open Mens Cobras
This is a sensational result. We pucnh above our division in Futsal and the competition is getting tougher each year.
And what about that terrific little Solomon Islands team – how good were these lads?
Futsal is growing fast and we need a good commercial sports model to allow it to grow. I just can’t help thinking about Viking Futsal – go back and have a listen to that interview, because so much of it makes so much sense.

The Futsal Nationals are underway in the ACT this week and we have a lot of young players representing the ACT. There is a galaxy of good games to go to, mens, womens, boys, girls, junior, youth, open, the lot and from all states in Australia. Go to Futsal Nationals for all the draws, times, locations and scores – pick a game and go and see it.
The program covers two very interesting themes – but related! What is a football curriculum anyway? The US organisation SoccerPlus FC has some very useful information.
Does your club or your age group in the High Performance program have a detailed curriculum they can produce for you to consider? And I don’t mean a few scratching on a scrap of paper or a few generalities, phrases, colloquial expressions! Ask them! If we want a technical revolution, there needs to be detailed planning and documention and resources available to be used and evaluated and amended as we go forward. How else can you make it work? . Given the new FFA National Curriculum, we need to start seeing this sort of detail emerge and quickly if coaches, players and parents are to make any meaningful use of the glossy FFA publication. In our case, it starts with our peak body, Capital Football, the Premier League clubs and the major Junior Clubs in the ACT. Then of course we go to “periodised training programs”, but that’s another story. This is one that the Near Post is only just beginning to get it’s teeth into in 2010. More to come.
Then we move to someone who has a lot of interesting things about building a footballer and being a coach. None other than Arsene Wenger, coach of Arsenal FC.
This coach knows plenty and all of it is applicable to all of us at every level of football in the ACT. We learn form the best at every level.

Less than 12 months since we played Kuwaitin Canberra and look at the team. Expect to see 7 A-League players on the field tonight.
But how many started in Canberra.....meaning the National Coach stuffed up big-time, in my view, with his teams selections.
More so that many of his starting A-League players that Canberra night aren't EVEN in the squad this time!
Matt Simon, Matt McKay, Michael Zullo, Daniel Mullen, Matt Thompson, Mitch Nicholls, Tom Pondeljak all played a part in Canberra. None will start tonight, most aren't even in Kuwait!
Did a National Coach ever change a squad so much in under 10 months?

In the first program for 2010 we give top billing to the development of junior footballers. Who better to talk to than Warren Grieve, the High Performance officer for Football West. He coached that fantastic Under 13 Boys team who captured the attention of all who saw them at the inaugural Australian FFA Under 13 Boys Nationals. They were the team that played “football” in all circumstances – the
“Barcelona of the West”.
Sadly, by contrast, the ACT Under 13 Boys team had a dreadful campaign. They were well off the pace and that said far more about our talented player development proves in the ACT than it did about the young lads that played for the ACT in this championships competition.
The question that should occupy our thoughts is whether Capital Football has made enough ground, preferably in the direction of Football West, to enable the ACT to be more competitive in the 2010 and play in style that gives meaning to the new National Curriculum.
The next championships in this age group will probably be in April 2010, so its not far away and is a good first examination of the new High Performance Football program. A bit harsh you say – well not really, because if it the HPP doesn’t work for this age group the entire development process collapses. Its that important! One thing is certain, you don’t need to win to be successful – the WA Under 13 Boys proved that last year.
Warren Grieve provides a candid insight into the conduct of the program that produces this wonderful young team that went on to provide a significant number of players to the inaugural Australian Under 13 team , including the Captain. As they say “the times they are a changing”! Oh yes, the inaugural FFA Under 13 Girls National Championships will be held at the same in 2010. Excellent.

The closing program is given to a lengthy "fireside chat" with John Mitchell, Coach and technical director of the ANU Premier League club, the U20 Elite program, which broke new ground in the Capital Football Premier League in the 2009 season. For the first time we saw a Premier League club take a whole of year approach to football and players, much like the AIS. John and ANU lifted the bar considerably and good thing they did if we are to see a significant improvement in the standard of Premier League football in 2010 and beyond. In fairness, Capital Football gave them the thumbs up to proceed. The ANU program is aimed at giving talented players under the age of 20 years, who have missed ACTAS and AIS, a chance to pursue serious football. So should every other Premier League club and the question remains as we close the year - what will Capital Football do to address this "tragic vacant space" (to quote John in an earlier interview) in our football development process? Perhaps this is the way? The new HP program has left it a vacant space (excluding the Summer 20s comp - club based anyway) and it looks like staying that way. For all the other PL clubs - if you want to keep your best - do as well or better than the ANU program. Who could argue with that?
In this discussion, much of which has not been broadcast before, John ranges across several football topics pertinent to the ACT and region. Its very interesting and he leaves you in no doubt about how he sees things. We need more of this.

Lucy and Paddy have the controls for the last show in 2009 and there's no stopping them. Its all happenning! The A league gossip, who really coaches Kuwait and what's in a name anyway, the Soccerros playing roster, whose in and whose out and who knows, and can they win, where did all the people come from to watch the last A league round - that's easy - they listen to the Nearpost National. The odd fearless prediction for the next A league round. Cry in ya Chardonnay Paddy, the Perth Shin-kickers are done for - and who adminstered the kiss of life to the Gold Coast. Strange things going on in the A league!! What about Harry K and the Turkish connection? When too much football gossip is what its all about. "Eamonn who", Paddy is heard to exclaim! They sent Eamonn on an all expenses paid "Celtic Tragics" reunion in storm ravaged Western NSW - something about inland beach football and would he like to be the inaugral patron. Eamonn couldn't resist. He's wet, not happy and someone borrowed his Celtics jersey! Is there no end to the lengths that Lucy (Paddy made me do it) and Paddy (my hand is no where near the ball) will go to, to promote the Nearpost National - No!. So listen.

Clive Palmer reckons Sir Pim is bashing the A-League by pushing for all A-League players to leave on loan before the finals season.
If this happened it would destroy the finals in my view but before we get all excited lets get real for a moment.
This is a one-off.
By the next World Cup surely the season will be longer and with four teams in Asian Champions League the problem should not occur again.
Secondly players like Archie Thompson, Matt Kemp, Eugene Galekovic and Scott Jamieson play ACL football next year so they should be okay to remain with their clubs and potentially be in the running for a Socceroos call-up.
Of the 15 players called up for Kuwait, 4 play ACL football. Of the others Tando Velaphi, and Danny Vukovic have NO CHANCE of ousting the current keeper mob. So 6 are covered.
Matt Thompson, Alex Brosque, Jacob Burns, and Matt Mackay have little or no chance of making the Socceroos squad given who we have played in the last 14 Asian Cup qualifiers, so no need for these guys to get off the beach never mind even contemplate a loan deal.
And that leaves Tommy Oar and Simon Colosimo. If they start in Kuwait, and only if they start should they even think about a loan deal. Remember Harry and Bresc and co have a tad more chance than a 9 game A-League rookie, exciting as he is, than Tommy Oar. And again where was Simon against...well Iraq, Bahrain, Qatar etc etc.
For all the excitable Aussis journo's talking up Colosimo and Brosque...funny how they are always Sydney players... the question remains.
Why didn't Pim choose ANY of these A-League players for the World Cup Qualifiers over the last two years?
And who is going to be left out from Emerton, Kewell, Bresciano, Kennedy, and co to make room for Brosque or Matt Thompson or whoever.
Craig Moore, Jason Culina and possibly Mile Sterjovski have a real chance so need to move by Pim's reckoning. Given the ACL starts during the final series moving to Adelaide or Melbourne maybe difficult, should those teams want them.
But Perth or the Roar may not make the finals, in which case, where is the problem really?
Happy Xmas to y'all!
More interesting to me is the amount of changes our wonder coach has made from the last team that I had to endure play Kuwait...and lose, in my home city of Canberra. Grrrrr Pim......

Melbourne v Sydney is always a big game in the A-League. Big crowds, send-off's thrashings we've had the lot.
This Saturday's is bigger than most.
Should Melbourne win they would be six points clear with 8 to play. Who would bet against them finishing top of the league and grabbing that crucial first Asian Champions League qualification spot.
And that would mean Melbourne a club that plans better than most in the A-League would be guaranteed two years in the ACL before the finals even start.
Barcelona, Man Utd and the like are always in the Euro Champs League, and if Melbourne make it again they will more evidence to say they are Australia's biggest and best football club on and off the field.
If Melbourne score first, at home, they will win and Asia is theirs.

This week we speak again to Eddie Senatore, co-founder of the Boomerangs and ACT Futsal Coach about preparations fro the Nationals, the usefulness of joining of HP Football and HP Futsal over the last eight weeks for futsal training, prior to the naming of the ACT teams and what might be important in preparing an ACT team for the Nationals.
Then we speak to Pat McCann about the recent FFA Senior Licence course run in the ACT and those two new mantras for coaches – “Run it or Play it” and “Play what you see”.
Capital Football has advised all clubs that the playing rules for Under 12s will change from 9 v 9 and a reduced size field, to 11 v 11 and a full size field.
The change was foreshadowed by Han Berger when he briefed us on the new National Curriculum – he gave no good reason to change, but the change was coming whether we liked it or not.
Small sided games underpin technical development, particularly in the junior ages groups and the ACT championed the introduction of small sided games. So it’s a very strange decision in this new football world of technical development across the early years.
The football “flat- earth” aficionados have the day it seems – well for now anyway. They just don’t get it! Just listen to the Georgia Soccer Association (USA) analysis of the matter. They know more about junior football development than Han Berger!
And of course the Under 10's are going BACK to 9 v 9. And interesting that "the experts" consider girls to be about two or three years behind boys in terms of football development....SO WHY ONE SIZE FITS ALL for boys and girls at all ages!

Australia 2009 is not as good as team as the one which took the field in Germany.
The group is much stronger this time: Germany and Brazil are not dis-similar, Croatia are nowhere near as strong as this young Serbian side, and of course Ghana are a much stronger proposition than Japan.
All that and a much more battle hardened Aussie team, one which has achieved wonderfully well to qualify, but has not convinced it's supporters it has the goal power to do well in South Africa. Not to mention the defensive abilities despite their meagre goals conceded in Asia qualifying.
Since Germany, Mark Viduka has not been replaced. Key players Scott Chipperfield, Vince Grella, Brett Emerton, Harry Kewell, Craig Moore, Lucas Neill have big big question marks over their pace and potential performances going into this World Cup.
Will they all make it?
Carl Valeri, Rhys Williams, Dario Vidosic, Brett Holman are all new World Cup possible starters. None are ripping it up at a top top club in Europe just yet.
But the draw is good.
Most Australians will expect Australia to do well especially after Germany. It's a World Cup, it's sport and Aussies often do well in Cricket, Union, and League albeit on a much much smaller World stage.
But by June 2010, no-one will expect us to get through this group easily. I don't think we can. But if we'd have drawn Algeria and USA everyone would have thought we'd walk that group, but of course we may not come through such a group either.
So the second World Cup may see us fail to achieve the heights of last time, but at least the expectations across the country will be tempered after a cruel cruel draw.
Will we win a game? Will we get a point? Who knows, it will be that tight and not completely impossible to see us go through, or indeed fail to get a point.
Should we fail the Aussie media will have their field day of course; but for football fans we know where we're at and what we are capable of.
The draw is a great test of Pim Verbeek and the Australian team. Will we succeed? It's going to be a test of the highest order and providing the "second appearance syndrome" doesn't raise it's head and the team bonds, remains focused and doesn't get distracted by Tim Cahill's media grabs and the like then we should perform to our potential.
Will we get through the group.
Not too optimistic..are you?

In this mornings Herald Sun the Head of the AFL says,
An entire AFL season could be abandoned and some clubs would "cease to exist" if the MCG was unavailable for 16 weeks during a soccer World Cup in Australia
What a complete idiot!
At the end of the interview he thinks wiser heads will prevail and the AFL season wouldn't be cancelled.
Of course it wouldn't, and the AFL season will continue as normal with a small break. Big deal.
The World Cup comes but once, and the AFL is the biggest game in Australia now, and will be after the World Cup should we get it...and that's a big if.
Why are the AFL so scared, it's truly pathetic.
Most AFL fans support the World Cup, support other Aussie sports, but would not wish to see their code close for a season; and no-one is asking them to. The AFL even moved their season for the Olympics didn't they so what's the big deal with the football World Cup.
Demetriou must be an idiot, scaremonger and Head of AFL rolled into one.
After all why would the greatest game in the World, as we're always told, be scared of a little old boring round ball!

Great to see young Aussie Robbie Kruse replacing Danny Allsopp and keeping Brazilian Ney Fabiano out of the Victory side.
And great to see Archie and Carlos combining with the young wayward former Roar star to entertain, score and win the game. Even Nicky Ward looked back to his most effective best.
However would Central Coast Mariners have gone down so easy?
Is Miron, once again, showing signs of losing the plot. What must the right winger, Jason Culina think?
Great game, but I bet Melbourne wish more away sides would play three up front!

When John Aloisi was at Coventry City he ran the forward line on his own in the old English First Division now called the EPL.
He was fast, direct and scored goals in an unfashionable team.
But the new Aloisi is a much slower version, and cannot run beyond the last player with any pace. And it was his pace that made him a star.
Robbie Fowler has similar problems, but Robbie was never as fast as Aloisi but he has greater goal awareness and can score goals, at 34 like at 19, from absolutely anywhere. Headers, shots, quick free kicks.
So it's not an age thing. But it is a pace thing for Aloisi. And it's gone.
Signing David Zdrillic, another slowing forward former Socceroo was a mistake in terms of goal return for Sydney FC although I would say Zdrillic contributed more to the team.
But Blind Freddy knew Aloisi would not add 10,000 to the crowd when he shifted from the Mariners to Sydney FC. Freddy also knew Aloisi as a crowd pleaser was pretty much gone.
And let's face it he only returned to Australia because no-one else in the whole world wanted him.
So why the hell did Sydney FC pay him a million plus when Archie Thompson, energetic, creative, inspirational and a fans favourite does so much more for less than half that.
Sydney clearly have too much bling. Always had always will.
What a waste!

If Branko had said Sydney FC are shit...would he have got fined $3,000 by the FFA, or would the FFA have agreed.
Maybe that was his problem. He said all teams in the league were shit...he should have just Sydney are...or are you not allowed to speak the truth anymore.
Sydney are shit, Sydney are shit, Sydney are shit, and while you are at it so is Aloisi!
And does Branko's fine $3000 reflect his recent wage announcement...$50 a week or Aurelio Vidmar's $10,000 Saudi promotion suggest Viddy is on more or is bagging the AFC members so much worse than saying all A-League teams are not very good!
???Who is Mary Whitehouse. She was the keeper of TV morals in the UK when I was growing up. Basically no-one was able to swear on telly without Mary getting stuck into everyone and everything!

Stephen Lustica was plunged into centre midfield for Gold Coast United on Saturday against Melbourne Victory.
Stephen is 18 and playing his first start in the A-League. Away to Melbourne at the Dome.
Gold Coast lost the midfield and lost the game 4-0.
No-one could blame a young aspiring player, but one could wonder at the logic of Miron Bleiberg and former Lazio midfielder and Assistant Coach Paul Okon.
Gold Coast's depth was stretched, away to Melbourne so why play the best midfielder in the league, a proven International at World Cup level, out on the right wing.
Particularly when the Gold Coast were unable to get the ball to Jason Culina and indeed after the first goal is was quickly apparent that it would be Melbourne down the middle, Melbourne down the left and Melbourne down the right. It was.
Which makes you wonder when little old football observers like me can pick HUGE defects in Miron (One season wonder) Bleiberg...and Vitaslez (I'd like to water plants) Lavicka tactical genius what exactly do these guys bring to the table?
Laurie McKinna even had a chat with Fozzie on SBS yesterday...what is the World coming to? Anyone laugh when Fozzie asked Lozza, oh so gently, about the style of play from Season 1 to now?
