AFL: Australia can't hear you!

So many great Aussie sporting stars coming out to support the World Cup bid. Ian Thorpe, Steve Waugh, Mark Webber, Robbie Farah, Cathy Freeman and now Liz Ellis.

And from so many different sports.

And not an AFL player in sight.

Do you think the AFL have banned them; surely they aren't that pathetic are they?

With less than one month to go, former Australian netball captain, Liz Ellis, is the latest Aussie to support Australia’s bid to host the 2022 FIFA World Cup™.

Ellis has swapped the ‘netball’ for the ‘football’ and now joins a range of other top Australian sporting stars including Steve Waugh, Brett Lee, Mark Webber, Robbie Farah, Ian Thorpe and Cathy Freeman who all want to see the FIFA World Cup™ come to our shores.

A member of Australia’s national netball team from 1992 until 2007, Ellis is the most capped international player for Australian netball. Ellis has represented Australia at four World Netball Championships and two Commonwealth Games. She was part of the team who won Commonwealth Games Gold Medals in 1998 and 2002, together with the 1995, 1999 and 2007 World Netball Championships title.

“Sport is a wonderful vehicle that brings together the nations and people of the world. The FIFA World Cup™ tournament is a perfect example of this – after all, it’s the biggest sporting event in the world. It would be terrific to see it come to Australia,” said Liz Ellis.

Australia has completed all the necessary preparation to show FIFA that we can host a technically excellent tournament that is also fun, safe and secure. But now it is time to demonstrate our nation’s strong public support for our bid.

“I encourage all Australians to support our bid to bring the FIFA World Cup™ to Australia in 2022. Just add your name at australiabid.com.au,” she added.

FIFA is set to announce the host of the 2022 FIFA World Cup™ on 2 December 2010 in Zurich.

Canberra already Smelling The Fear?

Canberra ABC Sports journo and friend Tim Gavel has taken the easy option, like many older Aussie sports journos, once more.

Now Tim is not a noted friend of the round ball game and rarely gives any coverage to the game on his one hour Saturday morning ABC Radio show.

So when the phone-in section is devoted to football for the first time this year, or so it seems in living memory, something must be up.

Tim announces that someone somewhere has said "if Australia gets the World Cup football will take over from the other codes as the number one sport."

And of course everyone who listens, the Union and League older fellas, are up in arms and on the blower in an instant.

All good craic of course, but how many times will Australian journos use the punching bag of football to scare the horses.

Were we afraid athletics would take over Australia if we got the 2000 Olympics or god forbid, swimming?

Most football fans follow all codes in Australia and I suspect you'll find many AFL, League and Union fans follow more than one sport; suggesting football would takeover if granted the World Cup in 2022; well it didn't in America and it won't here.

So Tim lift your game. If you want to talk football, how about talking about the A-League, the quality of football, the tactics, the players and what they bring, or Canberra United at length, add in the Socceroos or Matildas. In fact how about occasionally covering the Australian game with the same non-biased affection you have for other codes.

No couldn't do that could we. Scaring the horses is all we'll ever get on football on ABC Radio in Canberra it seems.

Canberra football fans deserve a little more air-time sometimes.

Then again we couldn't be bothered waiting. We just started our own radio shows, Farpost 3-5pm Sunday www.3xxfm.org.au and Nearpost 6.30-7.30 Tuesday and we even arranged to call our own Canberra United games live because the ABC might have it on TV but they'd never cover local women's football would they!

Craig Moore: It's Qatar not Dubai!

Aussie Agent Moore was arrested in Dubai last night for alleged drunken behaviour.

There is no truth to the rumour that he was sent by the FFA to test the alcohol laws ahead of the Qatar/Middle East World Cup bid.

Nice one Craig but you got the wrong country.

Still how do you think England fans will fare at the proposed Qatari World Cup.

Why? Because enlightened CEO Ian Collins and his AFL mates realised after five years of trying they could never get a pitch up to football standard....ain't that the truth!

Andrew Demetriou: Are you an idiot?

In this mornings Herald Sun the Head of the AFL says,

An entire AFL season could be abandoned and some clubs would "cease to exist" if the MCG was unavailable for 16 weeks during a soccer World Cup in Australia

What a complete idiot!

At the end of the interview he thinks wiser heads will prevail and the AFL season wouldn't be cancelled.

Of course it wouldn't, and the AFL season will continue as normal with a small break. Big deal.

The World Cup comes but once, and the AFL is the biggest game in Australia now, and will be after the World Cup should we get it...and that's a big if.

Why are the AFL so scared, it's truly pathetic.

Most AFL fans support the World Cup, support other Aussie sports, but would not wish to see their code close for a season; and no-one is asking them to. The AFL even moved their season for the Olympics didn't they so what's the big deal with the football World Cup.

Demetriou must be an idiot, scaremonger and Head of AFL rolled into one.

After all why would the greatest game in the World, as we're always told, be scared of a little old boring round ball!

AFL delighted with World Cup Supporter

Bishop Desmond Tutu announced his support for the Aussie World Cup Bid this morning and immediately drew loud support from the AFL Community across Victoria.

AFL CEO Andrew Dimitriou said,

"This is a great step forward for the bid. AFL fans are always complaining that football (soccer) just doesn't have enough goals. Announcing TuTu (pronounced Two-Two) as a supporter means all AFL fans will now be behind the bid."

Yeah, take that FFA.

Who would want a few World Cup games in Canberra in ten years time, a hefty taxpayer bill for us poor sods, more Mariners stale crumbs in the coming years, and no legacy for football in the region......only the College Street mob.

Astrojax..lunch? it was like this

Astrojax asked me for the real NPC lunch..so here it is.

I enjoyed a wonderful steak, with my friends from Capital Football at the National Press Club today. Frank Lowy, Sir Frank to you, and FFA CEO Ben Buckley were entertaining us...and they did.

I moved seamlessly across to Canberra A-League bid leader Ivan Slavich, asking him quickly and quietly how the bid meeting this morn had gone with the FFA. He's close I reckon, very close..particularly as we listened to Ben replying to ABC Tim Gavel's question.

Hmmn my table murmured....or was that appreciation of the wine!

I mingled briefly coz it's always brief innit when they find out who I am, with Front Page Canberra Times journo Merryn Sherwood and spied FFA Media boss Bonita Mersiades..from a distance..I'm still smarting from my non-invitation to the World Cup bid launch.

SBS Phil McCallef has put on some more weight since I last saw him in Bangkok two years ago; so thought about the steak a bit more as I wolfed it.

Back to Bonita, she's fierce you know, would eat you alive and me and probably will if she ever gets to read this, and she'll know you are reading this as well, she's that good, but she's doing a dandy job even if I'm not allowed in.

Maybe that's a good thing.

Anyway, I noted she was taking all the questions down to Frank and Ben, and I'm sure ABC's Tim Gavel's was noted, (very good question Tim) as was John Taylor's from the Daily Telegraph....not having a good week that mob.

I was going to ask a question, try and throw my voice, pretend I was from the Western Sydney bid but had some steak left so got into it..as you do (you can take the boy out of Burton on Trent, but y'know the rest free food etc)...and Western Sydney might be not quite so strong...just quietly said someone...or was that the wine.

Then some FFA big wigs spoke to Heather Reid from Capital Football and I got my handshook by mistake.

A very even biggerwig from the FFA who's name I can't mention ran away, instantly, when I was introduced as a "blog writer." Sort of funny seeing the 5 meter dash record in a crowded lunch room.

How would they have reacted if they said I was a retired teacher looking for a quid, any quid!

Sports Minister Kate Ellis came in, everybody looked, I mean everybody coz I was watching em, and then Andrew Barr came in, not so many looked.

Frank was awesome, Ben was smooth and I thought his tan is quite nice for one so office bound. And I ain't gay I'm just from Canberra...that sort of guy. I notice stuff like that.

I pinched myself that I was listening to one of Australia's finest businessman, nay World Businessmen leading the game, football, here in Australia, and he was right here in Canberra talking about Australia, football, business, World Cup.

Loving it Frank. Not a step back.

And a good think that man Slavich got this Canberra A-League bid going coz this city would look a tad stupid this week wouldn't it? Y'know we've got the Brumbies so we'd love the World Cup...err right.

And I love what Frank is doing for the game, his vision for the country.

And then Frank spoke of the 32 training centres we would need for 32 teams across all our regions and what a legacy that would be. That struck home.

And when he added John O'Neill had been the first to congratulate him after we qualified for the World Cup I thought that's how it should be Union and Football, Wallabies and Socceroos together.

So that was, my lunch at the Press Club..oh and Canberra Stadium officials met with the FFA prior to the lunch and word is...

Socceroos in Canberra....word is they'll be back..so get used to it!

Great to hear that the first person to ring Frank Lowy to congratulate him on Socceroos qualifying for the 2010 World Cup was fmr football boss and head of Australian Rugby Union...John O'Neill. We need more of this.

And even Andrew Dimitriou, (see quote below) AFL Supremo has come out and has said AFL supports the Aussie World Cup bid. Of course most AFL fans do, but sometime Andrew has said some pretty strange things in regard to football.

I'd love to see the Wallabies and Socceroos working more closely together as our true International codes and would love to see some huge AFL games in and around the World Cup to give our International friends a taste of the unique Aussie game.

Football is never going to lose out on this, but we have a lot to gain, and quick, if we can assist the other codes with their growth.

Rugby League..well not sure we have much to offer them, or they us...but we'll see.

AFL supports soccer World Cup bid

The AFL has thrown its support behind Australia's bid to host either the 2018 or 2022 soccer World Cup despite the potential clash between the rival codes.

Soccer's biggest party coming to Australia would present its challenges for the AFL in terms of the use of stadia during winter, competing for fans, and vying for the next generation of footballers and followers.

But a spokesman for AFL chief executive Andrew Demetriou said the league was right behind Australia's bid.

"We're very supportive of it," he said.

32 training centres for World Cup

Shepparton, Victoria poulation 60,000 has already put its hand up so imagine the legacy of training centres that could be built for the regions with a World Cup.

Sir Frank heads to Canberra

Calm down, it's not for the A-League announcement but Frank Lowy and Ben Buckley will be here on the weekend, even overnighting in the finest city to want an A-League team.

The official launch of the Australian bid for the 2018/2022 FIFA World Cup will take place at Parliament House on Sunday and the very next day Sir Frank and Australian sports finest CEO Ben Buckley will be at the National Press Club to talk about the bid, the World Cup bid. Live on ABC 1pm Monday.

I'll be at the Press Club to hear the top men in Australian sport talking about the future of football in Australia.....

and just quietly Mr Lowy if you'd like to have a chat on Sunday night about the Canberra A-League bid you can pop round for a nice cuppa, I've got 1750 foundation members keen to meet you and we'll see if we can persuade you to put us in the A-League and quick....

Enjoy the 2010 World Cup..it could be our last

I spent years telling everyone I knew that Mark Viduka and Harry Kewell were good enough to get this country to a World Cup.

With other players in Serie A, EPL, SPL and Eredivision it wasn't hard to see the potential.

After all even good old Ireland had made it with many lesser known stars and no-one with the individual talent of Kewell or Viduka.

Most non-football Aussies smiled and just shook their head.

Okay I was right, but what about after the 2010 World Cup.....we ain't going anywhere are we......

Our Under 17's aren't going to any World Cup after last weeks performance,
Under 20's well they might but do we have another Kewell, I'm not hearing it if we do are you, and the Olyroos were rubbish with only Matthew Spiranovic among the outfield players worth truly considering for future stardom.

So enjoy South Africa 2010 because there is no way we are going in 2014 and we may well need to host the thing to get there again.

Don't believe me?

Tim Cahill, Lucas Neill, Vinny Grella, Scott Chipperfield, Marco Bresciano, Archie Thompson, Craig Moore, Mark Scharwer, Brett Emerton, Jason Culina will all retire after South Africa. Age and travel will weary them. And if it doesn't they won't have much left in the tank for another four years, not all of them.

If Cahill was bursting through last World Cup, Scott Chipperfield and Lucas Neill were adding to Kewell and Viduka's depth but where are our next generation of top line players coming from

They all need to be playing Champions League, EPL or some other such fine divisions if we are to push on after South Africa.

Bruce Djite may come good and push into a higher league. Nathan Burns has yet to play. Carl Valeri and Brett Holman both need to take another step or two.

Matthew Spiranovic we need him to keep growing, but will he be on his own?

Who else will crack the EPL?

Adrian Leijer? James Holland not sure, Mark Milligan, I doubt it.

Adam Federici is a hope.

So here's my team for post-2010.

Federici,

Carney, yes we'll still need him, Spiranovic, Milligan/North, Wilkshire, yes we'll need to keep him as well!

In midfield James Holland, I'm not sure yet, Carl Valeri, Jason Culina still going?, Neil Kilkenny you are joking, Stuart Musialik..forget it, Ben Kantarovski only 16 so who knows.

Upfront Bruce Djite..will he really come back to play with this lot, James Troisi, Matt Simon, at top level I doubt it. Will Josh Kennedy's frail body really hold up?

How many of them will crack the top leagues by then? Few if any. Certainly none to compare to the current list in my view.

How many other potential stars have I missed? Nikita Rukavystya, Nicky Ward, Mile Jedinak, Shannon Cole, Michael Zullo..not at the level we are talking about are they?

That's my worry...I might have missed some but they are hardly stars are they?

Enjoy South Africa I will, because there is no way we are going again for a long time unless you know something I don't.

And the growth of the game will slow post-South Africa, no wonder we need to bid for the 2018 World Cup..at least that way we'll only miss one!

Australia still the lucky country

Qatar and China drew 0-0 overnight in Doha meaning the Aussies took another huge leap towards the World Cup....next stage at least.

With China and Iraq way off the pace, a draw against Iraq on Sunday morning Aussie tme and a Qatar victory over China and we're almost certain, definitely, maybe, probably to go through.

Who could catch us then, with two places up for grabs and it is irrelevant if we come first or second.

Could see a very nice boring draw being played by two teams in Qatar...hmmmn..must message Pim and the guys:)

2018 World Cup side

Football Federation Australia (FFA) Chairman, Frank Lowy AC, today met with the young men who will carry the hopes of Australian football for the next decade.

Well some of them! These things change. Danai Gapare from Canberra was there. Well done Danai. But I'm sure Chris Bush and one or two others will be pushing hard.

And no pressure on our young fella's hey Frank!

WISHING AND HOPING - THE FACES OF 2018

Football Federation Australia (FFA) Chairman, Frank Lowy AC, today met with the young men who will carry the hopes of Australian football for the next decade.

The Australian Under 17 team – known as the Qantas Joeys – met with the team as they assembled in Sydney to watch their senior counterparts, the Qantas Socceroos, play an international friendly match against Ghana on Friday night.

“This is our football future,” Mr Lowy said.

“These young men are the faces of 2018 who will be the core of the team that fills our field of dreams in our bid to host and play in the 2018 FIFA World Cup.”

Mr Lowy said that he wants players around Australia, who have aspirations to be a footballer, to be committed to the Australian cause for 2018 and beyond.

“There is no greater honour than representing your country.

“Australia provides you with education, both academic and sporting, and I think it’s only fair that young people with sporting ability should choose with pride to play for Australia whether you are born here or come as a migrant or refugee.”

Mr Lowy said that he was delighted the Qantas Joeys reflected the diversity of the Australian population, comprising players from all over Australia and including some who had come to Australia as refugees and migrants.

He encouraged all of them to work hard at school and at football.

“Dreams do come true if you’re prepared to work hard.”

“Our bid for the 2018 FIFA World Cup is not a dry run,” he said.

“We want to host, play in and win the World Cup in 2018.”
