After the belter in the West bring on the El Classico in Gosford

It wasn't pretty football in the West but it was a belter of a game. Perth v Wellington. And arguably two of my least favourite football teams are playing much better football than years gone by.

But it's not Swansea is it.

Great to see my most hated Coach ex-Ger Iain Ferguson using brain and craft to play full-back Scott Neville in a switch for my man of the match Billy Mehmet. Who'd have tried such a thing?

And Neville won the game with composure and touch in the area where it most matters. The opposition box.

Ben Sigmund went off and Wellington seemed to come undone defensively. Even at 1-0 there was only one team playing football but Perth kept going and with a vocal crowd behind them they roared home in extra time. Great game.

But now I can settle in to see teams that are so much more than their individual parts. No Shane Smeltz or Paul Ifill here.

But in Broich, Berisha and Rogic, McGlinchey, Amini and Ibini their is more than enough talent to enjoy.

But it's the game style that will be beaut.

In Perth the ball was belted hell and high, so often. The Roar and Mariners are playing a higher brand of football these days. Even their keepers have to play.

The Mariners are 2-0 down from the first leg. In Australia that scorelines counts for nothing. Iran had around 20 minutes to wipe it out in 1997 and that against 95,000 Aussies.

The Mariners need the first goal to change the game and then it will really be game on.

This one is nicely poised. Brisbane should be able to score one, in which case the Mariners will need four!

Can the Mariners keep Brisbane scoreless?

Surely not.

Brisbane lost - Sydney find an attacker? Commentators entertain

Great weekend for the believers in young Australian football players, attacking players.

Bernie Ibini, Mustafa Amini, Demi Petratos, Mate Dugandzic just some of the young Aussies hitting the net - and three of them are Under 20.

Laugh: Robbie Slater in his column on Sunday discussed how to beat the Roar - and he mentioned how Sydney would miss THE PACE of Mark Bridge.

Well to all football fans Mark Bridge has many things but pace he ain't.

Think pace think Petratos - he's now scored as many goals this season as Bridge!

And one for Jan Versliejan - playing Petratos in the midfield in the Youth World Cup was a huge mistake - his short passing game is erratic, he has pace, many skills (sometimes) and an eye for a goal. Maybe Vitaslav Lavicka learned a thing or two about his forward line yesterday.

Sydney got lucky - an early goal, a dodgy corner and unlike the previous time they played Brisbane they took their chances and for once Liam Reddy didn't do anything too stupid. Remember the first game?

As for Brisbane - well had to laugh at Fox Sports Commentators saying Sydney were fantastic in the first half.

70% possession to the Roar suggested something else.

And in Adelaide wasn't it great to see young Aussies getting a goal each. Amini has made the headlines but there is a lot to like about Bernie Ibini-Isei and he's the perfect foil for Matt Simon - more skill, more nous and more pace. Working well.

And if Sydney can beat the Roar - well how much for the Mariners chances?

Sydney with Terry Antonis to refire, Mark Bridge to return will continue to do well - especially away from home. And if their keeper can keep clean sheets they will improve. A big if!

The Mariners on the other hand - how far can they go?

The Roar might have the record but the Mariners are going to challenge them pretty hard I reckon.

A 36 game run and only three points ahead - not unasailable is it?
And in Josh Rose and Pedj Bojic we have a carbon copy of Ivan Franjic and Shane Stefanutto.

Compare the other full backs around the league - Jamie Coyne, Scott Jamieson, Fabio, the guys in Adelaide, you get my drift. Which teams have the best defensive and attacking full-backs. Which teams are 1 and 2!

5 Foreign Players we don't need

In the A-League we love to sign foreign players - often has beens from the lower teams or divisions of Europe or Brazil.

Are the Aussie's really any worse?

After seven years we have our proof.

Here's five, still running around that we really don't need anymore, if we ever did - and I bet they get more coin than the local player they replace.

Andy Slory at Adelaide - go home - develop Iain Ramsay

Stephen McGarry at Perth Glory - Adam Hughes is no worse.

Grant Brebner at Melbourne Victory - I'd rather see Billy Celeski, even Leigh Broxham develop thank you. I've struggled to watch you for years and it hasn't been joyful not in Australia - even worse in Asia.

Robson at Gold Coast United - what has he given us and he's been here for years!

Terry McFlynn, Northern Irish - great guy - but is he really so much better than an Aussie? Tezza get naturalised now or it's oot for you.

And I'd rather keep Matty Kemp or even Evan Berger playing than another Fabio, left-back Brazilian that we desperately need to have it seems.

We love to sign overseas players - but do we really need so many of them anymore?

A-League - only really ever had one decent foreigh coach

We've had lots of foreign coaches in the A-League - usually at inflated prices.

The Dutch duo are currently sitting bottom - the Kiwi is just ahead.

Of the ten current coaches five are foreign and only Vitaslav Lavicka and Scottish Coach Iain Ferguson are in the top half of the table - both probably have spent more money than their counterparts.

Fergie has a team that could do well - an ageing team based on grit rather than finesse. It could collapse after 12 months - sounds like Perth! But it has enougb craft to do well. Enough craft to entertain me - I doubt it, although ex-Celtic player Liam Miller plays under ex-Ger Ferguson (they are always jealous of the Celtic style) is entertaining me - sometimes.

Richard Money, Steve McMahon, Terry Butcher never gave us much did they?

Gary Van Egmond, Ange Postecoglou, Graham Arnold, Aurelio Vidmar and Ernie Merrick have made their mark. Even Miron!

Foreign Coaches - despites Lavicka's win - only Pierre Littbarski entertained me - he won, with Dwight Yorke, Steve Corica and David Carney in some style.

So one foreign coach has really delivered in our seven years - it's time Australia, it's time!

Aussie bottom teams play the best football of any bottom team in the world?

If you're team is bottom you aren't usually happy - and few neutrals would ever tune into watch the bottom teams in England, Scotland, Spain or Germany.

In Australia it's different - the Melbourne Heart and Adelaide United Dutch Coached teams are bottom of the A-League but both play good football, or aim to.

The Heart were great entertainment last year and only seem to lack a scorer or two. United always entertain but may have soft centre this year it seems.

Wellington will surely end on the bottom with their resources and start to the season that's what you'd expect.

Bruno: Has Brett Emerton saved Vitaslavs job?

If you've watched Sydney FC in the last two seasons under Vitaslav - it has been boring. I love football - but it was dire!

So boring the fans deserted in droves, even after they clung on to win the Premiership in 2009/10.

Is this year Lavicka's last chance?

I still get the twitches when I think Sydney are playing. Do I really want to watch this mob? And with Terry Antonis away I was scared to waste my time. Would they entertain me without Terry - even despite the promising signs in the recent games.

I'm still cautious like the whole of Sydney - we just can't take more pain!

But I turned on; it was Emmo, Nicky and Karol that was teasing me in. I know they can play.

Sydney's crowds are up almost 14,000 average compared to 7,000 last year. No mean feat.

Even without the excitement machine Terry Antonis for the clash against the Gold Coast - Sydney FC despite perhaps cruelly being 2-0 down found something, grabbed a lot of luck and won 3-2.

Last year they could never come back - ever, or so it seemed. They lacked, fitness, cohesion, craft and pace.
Even despite Michael Beauchamp trying to emulate last years Centre Back performances Sydney continue to interest me.

Much much more mobile, a whole new midfield and it can't be too long before Sydney FC go one better than Terry McFlynn as midfield distributor -maybe next year. How did young Aussie Stuey Musalik threw away his career?

And in Mark Bridge, Stuey's mate, they have a player who hasn't scored for years and yet still heads the attack. No problem if the team were winning easily but they aren't.

Vitaslev didn't sign a striker - he signed Karol Kisel a right sided midfielder and then in Brett Emerton was offered another, right sided midfielder and of course he hard to take him!

A striker - Bruno Cazarine - scores as many as most so why not?

But Vitaslav never did get a striker - and looked just three or four weeks out to be working hard to produce another mind-numbing attacking display.

He landed Emerton; Antonis grows in stature. Tricky Nicky is so much better with Emmo in the team, as is Karol Kisel.

But Sydney now have ability, finally to comeback from being a goal down. Brett Emerton is no small player in this component of the new Sydney FC - imagine if they had a real striker.

In Bruno the Brazilian they have a goalscorer. Does Vitaslav know?

If Sydney could stop conceding the first goal - play Cazarine, drop Reddy and in time replace Beauchamp (a liability always) and move on from McFlynn next year they could have a team to die for.

For now a top three finish is highly possible - especially if Antonis returns to link with Emmo!

Five things to look forward to in the A-League this weekend

There are only five....I know there are heaps more these days but most blog readers have the attention span of a gnat.

1. Friday night football - Adelaide United at home, I love it and United and Heart always play or try to play good football. Both our Dutch Coaches under the pump, with Versleijan gone and taking a pop at our Craig Foster this week - Dutch are cellar dwellars just now.

And Andy Slory - is there no better Aussie than this Dutch wannabee?

2. Mustafa Amini and Bernie Ibini might team up together for the Mariners - can't wait for that. Should make watching Wellington a tad more interesting this week.

3. Then on Saturday we go crazy. Melbourne v Roar, Harry v Ange and co. Big crowd, great game and pressures on Mehmet....again. Will the ageing Victory look like a team, or will they be severely embarrassed by a youthful rampaging coached Roar.

Brebner and Broxham to start...I'll weep I really will.

4. Can't wait to watch Sydney FC at home. A better test than the Roar and I'll think they'll win. Brett Emerton, Nicky Carle and Terry Antonis. Who can stop this midfield?

Hope Antonis plays number 10 so I can watch and drool at an Aussie on the ball.

5. And the Glory v Jets has enough to spark interest. Franny Jeffers to return and the Glory under Liam Miller look like a team for the first time in seven years. Well done Fergie. Limited style of play, but a team nonetheless.

6. Oh and if Liam Reddy is in the team - what's that all about! Type rest of the post here

40,000 again in the A-League: Mehmet looking like a risky appointment.

The thing is the Victory don't look like a team that has any shape, or structure.

Players are being swapped and swapped again during the game and Aussie fans watching Ante Covic and co boot the bejaysus out of the ball, especially after watching Ange P's Brisbane Roar the night before - well it's painful to watch.

Compare player for player - Victory to Roar and Victory would win in most fans eyes.
But in times of woe - the Roar have a plan, the players play to it.

In Melbourne what the hell has Mehmet and Muscat being doing. The longest pre-season in history has produced nothing really.

Harry plays on the left, Rojas on the right. Carlos in number 10 and dumb and dumber in behind I guess. Is there no other midfield contenders? Archie and or Solarzarno at 9.

Victory need a midfielder, a technical player and quick. They also need a hell of a lot of coaching. Right now the players must be losing a heap of confidence in the unproven and rooky coach Mehmet Durakovic.

Persevering with Grant Brebner and Leigh Broxham in the midfield is desperate stuff. Long-balls, not very accurate, crunching tackles and a short game that relies on too many touches.

They were useless for Victory in recent Asia campaigns they are a dire combination right now.

Mehmet isn't giving us much football strategy talk off the field - and his players are reflecting this on it.

He needs time - but what a risky appointment.

Home bankers in the A-League finally - sign the league is stronger?

In the first couple of years it was hard to get a home win - hard to give the home fans the win they deserved.

After two weeks of the season we've had just one away win.

Sign the attacking home sides are becoming much better at attacking, keeping the ball.

In the early days teams attacked at home as you're meant to but away teams had more than enough skill to sit and wait for the puff and technique to run out then simply hit them on the break.

Another sign the league is progressing methinks.

A-League much harder to predict than AFL: Brisbane, Sydney, Victory, Mariners and Perth to win this weekend

You know the competition is crap when you can pick most if not all of the winners every week.

The expanded AFL enables most fans to easily pick 6, 7 or sometimes 8 from 8. Don't believe me - ask any AFL fan. Their problem. The EPL not so easy, but most fans know United, City, Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool and Spurs will be winners.

But the A-League is tough - and once the Roar lose, which they will, it will be tougher still.

Can Sydney sneak it at Hindmarsh - maybe they can - they need a striker, just one. But given they are a little stronger defensively, Liam not Reddy aside, with Emerton, Kisel, Antonis, and Petratos they have much, much more forward mobility then previous. Not enough, but maybe enough for away day success.

You heard it here first!

Free help for our new Victory Coach - and Vitaslev for that matter too.

Archie Thompson has been one of the A-League most effective forwards and goalscorers in the A-League.

He's tricky, crafty, plays with a smile and when fit causes havoc.

So why not play Archie nearer to the goal, rather than out on the wing, and you might find that the Victory goal drought is over.

Harry is 33. And like it or not Harry is not your lone, pacy target man anymore.

So play Harry in behind a forward or two or play him on the left.

It's quite simple player selection. Archie's been trialled in the forward role for about 15 years - so give him a go. It works, it's proven.

And while we're at it.

Over at Sydney FC. I know you had Karol Kisel signed up, who seemingly can play only on the right. Well guess what Brett Emerton can also, only play on the right.

Now that smacks of poor spending, poor or desperate planning, but either way check Emmo's CV.

He's not a creative centre-mid, he's never played on the left in his right, he's not so technically gifted like Dwight Yorke that he can play anywhere.

He's a certain type of powerful, running, mayhem creating EPL player. Not dissimilar to Craig Johnston of yesteryear. Emmo ain't going to do anything more than:

Run up and down the line
Make it seem you have an extra defender and attacker.
Cross, well on occasion, poorly when his technique lets him down.
Score the odd goal.

All from the right.

So Vitaslev play this excellent athlete on the right and let's get the most from a limited, albeit a fantastic prototype, of this sort of international player. He's not Harry, Dwight or even Nicky - ask the fans we've watched him for years.

Dario Vidosic - welcome home, Fabio to go home?

Dem Reds were missing Marcos Flores - how could he be replaced?

Well Dario Vidosic may not be Flores, but the returning Socceroo has comeback so much more influential than the young boy who left after season 1.

He has tricks, an aggressive eye to go forward and makes mayhem.

A welcome addition to the league.

Meanwhile Mehmet has a few problems down the other end.

While Sergio Van Djik was scoring the winner, our Archie,a similar prolific scorer has been shunted a long way from goal, to include first Allsopp and now Harry as the main man.

Two games - no goals. Not working Mehmet.

And in Fabio have you really improved on Matty Kemp, or even Evan Berger or any other Aussie? How long do we have to wait for the latest Brazilian to go home?

Top ten Aussie sports events? Adelaide United v Melbourne Victory this Friday?

Every football fan or player in the country should watch this match.

A sold-out crowd at Hindmarsh is simply one of the finest sights in Australian sport. Is it in our top ten regular season games for any code?

And every young player in the country would surely want to imagine him or herself on such a stage. Pity they can't get to see it...unless they have Foxsports.

With the Victory away support adding spice to a game which needs little added, the atmosphere will be electric, it always is.

The football will be fast and furious and the team with the greatest skill will overcome.

And Harry is playing, I'm also keen to see Dario Vidosic and Marco Rojas....he's a Kiwi - that hurts!

It will be a fantastic night for football - just a normal A-League round. If you love your sport don't miss it

The Lustica syndrome alive and well in Australia?

The A-League is back - the Young Socceroos have played their World Cup - so how many of our young guns are flying around the league on the opening day of the season? Or come to that the next group of Young Socceroos?

Steven Lustica - hard to believe a Young Socceroo couldn't get TWO full games with the Gold Coast over the last two seasons, walks into a four year deal with Hadjuk, has played a number of crucial games in the centre mid position already. 35,000 v Dinamo Zagreb - Lustica marshalling the midfield. So why didn't he get a go in Australia?

Were Robson or Bas Van Den Brink, so much better than a developing Young Aussie?
How does a Young Aussie develop? Go overseas?

Have to wonder if the Young Aussies will be given a go in Australia this season or will we continue to import Euro/South American trash instead.

Euro trash might be a harsh term - but how is it Dutch players can pour into our leagues, Brazilians as well. Are these guys soooo desperate to play in Australia they forego contracts in Europe. GIVE ME A BREAK.

And they are taking our young guns places. And as the recent Socceroos team shows players who play in the A-League are good enough - they just need to play.

Think Matt Mackay, Alex Brosque, David Carney, Sasa Ognenoski, Mile Jedinak, Robbie Kruse, Michael Zullo - all Socceroos who played many many games in the A-League.

Terry Antonis got a start last week, Bernie Ibini not much, Kofi Danning got a gig on the opening day at Brisbane - not seen at Sydney last year. Musti is injured and Demi Petratos not sighted.

And these are the "stars." Where are the other young guns, or can the league only use a couple of Young Socceroos each year at best. Who will give them a go?

No-one it seems - not if we can keep bringing in older, washed up European players (Dutch) with masses of experience. But is the league so much better for not having young Aussies on the park?

A:League: The ten (actually more) I want to see play

Now the A-league has just two players this year, Harry and Emmo, so it should be more interesting everyone tells me.

Well with Matthew Leckie, Marcus Flores and others having left who are the fellas who the Nearpost is particularly looking forward to seeing take to the field in Season 7:

Melbourne Victory - Of course Harry Kewell, but I'm as interested to see how the young Kiwi Marco Rojas goes. Looked very special against Australia in June - can't wait to see him progress in a strong team.

Sydney FC - Terry Antonis and Demi Petratos look a bit tasty. Again Brett Emerton adds interest, Nicky Carle is always worth the money but the two young guns should have a great season. Let's hope there are 25,000 fans each week, before we send them off to Europe in a year or two.

Melbourne Heart - A lot to like in the new team. Always playing good football. Brendan Hamill should take a step in defence and Aziz Behich is, once again, showing a young winger struggling to turn it on, can soon become a lightning quick attacking defender. Think Ashley Cole or Michael Zullo. Two young guns worth watching. And the return of Fred. Think the Heart might have one or two young Aussies step forward this season.

Perth Glory - I'm a Celtic fan from wayback so particularly interested to see Liam Miller in the playmaker role in the West. And not sure if this guy will get any game time but having watched him in the U17 World Cup I'm interested to see how Jesse Makarounas. He might be getting on but I enjoy following Travis Dodd up and down the line.

Wellington Phoenix - Will they have a team - I think not. And I can't think of one player I want to watch. Okay I'm interested in Mirjan Pavlovic and possibly Jimmy Downey but I'm not interested in Tony Lochhead.

Adelaide United - the flair under Flores may have left but I'm expecting Dario Vidosic to take the league by storm - also Iain Ramsey is always worth watching. Let's hope he takes the next step over the Dutch import Slorey. Adelaide are always great value at home on a Friday night. Can't wait!

Newcastle Jets - Well if Ben Kantarovski is going to be the player we all predict then this year he has to have a bloody big one. I'm not so sure he's going to progress to the level we thought. And really not a lot of excitement in this team with Jason Culina injured and if your idea of excitement is Labinot Haliti well good luck to yer - I'm pinning my hopes on Marco Jesic and James Virgili to get me interested.

Central Coast Mariners - surprised SBS last year but Bernie Ibini-Isei and Musti Amini should have impressive seasons. Oliver Bozanic continues to improve. At least there are a few footballers in the club these days - you know what I mean!

Brisbane Roar - Always great to watch - so the team is probably greater than any individual. A defender, Ivan Franjic I am enjoying watching. And am fascinated to see if Kofi Danning can take a leap back to professional football - and maybe spark the flame again under Ange. Big season for Kofi. Mitch Nicholl, Thomas Broich - what's not to like?

Gold Coast United - Yes they are still with us! James Brown and Adama Traore are my players to watch. Aussie Brown should have a strong year and if I'm a good judge should cement his place in the team. Miron will probably have other thoughts.

Socceroos/Asia Cup 2015: TV Money to save the A-League

But will we ever use money in football wisely in Australia?

Socceroos are the big big drawcard and with World Cup qualifiers on FTA in coming years and the Asian Cup in Australia in 2015 we have a lot to sell.

Not to mention the A-League which is what really needs the money to kick on.

Jesse Finks talks of rumoured figures below. And if Fox wanted to get in early you'd imagine we'd get more money than $42 mill per year.

A nice ten A-League teams with $3 million per year per club would be great - but given each W-League team needs $1 million per year (wouldn't that be nice) and all the other increasing costs from o/s teams, Socceroo payments and of course ahem grassroots and coaching programs - and the soon to be increased if we get the TV deal FFA staff, can we really give the A-League what it needs.

$60 million per year is probably a 4 year $250 million deal approx - surely the Socceroos and Asian Cup Hosts can lock in the cash.

Last year Buckley turned down a revised offer made in late 2009 by Fox Sports that included a free-to-air component and which would have replaced the $130 million, seven-year deal made in 2006 with Premier Media Group, owners of Fox. The new deal would have locked in FFA until after the 2015 AFC Asian Cup, which is to played in Australia.

In the press this figure was put at $60 million a year. Insiders at FFA I have spoken to have it at $42 million. Whether it was $42m or $60m, or something in between, the exact figure was significantly more than the $17 million a year averaged out on the original seven-year 2006 deal.

FFA: Still blundering along - Will they use Grassroots in 2011?

Socceroos v Chile the game is expected to be off.

But in a football world on the FFA seem to be able to handle PR with such aplomb.

Still on the backfoot - still making the most beautiful game one that lacks worthy news and promotion.

When was the last time an FFA announcement about the game excited you?

Cancelled Socceroos games.
Expected review of the A-League
Mooted shorter season?

We just seem to lack a whole lot of excitement. Bring back John O'Neill.

It's not what you say, but how and when you say it.

Into Asia
Hyundai Sponsorship
Socceroos to the World Cup
New teams in a new league.

Admitedly much bigger bolder events but really do we have nothing to sell in Australia in term of a vision.

Junior season kicks off in 4 weeks - lets see how the FFA leverage this in 2011.

Afterall it's all about the Grassroots isn't it - but how is Ben and co going to connect.

I'm waiting.

Boom time for Aussie players - in Australia - in 2012?

With so many young Aussies and older Aussies heading to Asia in the recent A-League break you have to start to wonder who will fill the spots next season.

Matthew Leckie, Robbie Kruse, Mustafa Amini, Luke Devere, Dino Djubic, and Alex Brosque are just some of the good great and ordinary A-League players who have left or will leave the A-League in coming days. And most of them have been established players on increasing pay packets.

So when these stars and rising stars of the A-League depart - and there are many more going or gone in 2011 - what does that mean for the players left behind and indeed the wages of those left behind?

Of course clubs will look to reduce their wage bill as clubs cost spiral but given the huge numbers of players leaving, the limit on overseas players, the Aussies left to pick up where the above mentioned players have left must be able to get an inflated wage.

Did Adriano Pellegrino get a handy pay rise heading to the Patricio Perez, Mustafa Amini depleted Central Coast Mariners?

Will the A-League youth players suddenly find $5,000 is not enough anymore as they are whisked off to another A-League club desperate to swell the ranks, the Aussie ranks.

With less and less players coming back from England and Europe, most of them are here now aren't they, it seems to me the Aussie player playing in the Youth League or VPL or NSWPL will have a better chance than ever of getting picked up and getting a better wage than they possibly could have dreamed of previously.

Great opportunities you'd think for State League and Youth League players to come into the fold.

But will they be able to improve the quality - some maybe - all, no chance.

And what of their wages - less than a Brosque and Devere perhaps but surely a wage bigger than they truly deserve right now.

The A-League clubs must spend 85% of their salary cap - but will the Aussies benefit?

Indeed with all the Aussie players leaving will the standard fall in 2012 - or are we now producing so many quality young players it won't matter?

Muscat Victorious?

Kevin Muscat retires at the end of the Asian Champions League - and he's been the backbone of the Victory side for years.

A leader on the park - hard to believe he wouldn't have had huge influence over the playing side of things at Victory - but his name rarely seems to be mentioned in the mix for the Victory job.

True he'd be better off in an Assistant or Youth team position but you have to think he's already been doing his apprenticeship over the last six years.

Can't see him leaving - will he get the job?
