National Youth Championships Final Results:

Both the ACT boys under14’s and under 15’s have finished their national championships on a high. The 14’s, in their first national championships, defeated NSW Country 4-1 in a playoff for 9th/10th while the 15’s beat Country Victoria 5-1 in their 7th/8th playoff this afternoon in Coffs Harbour.

Coming into their final pool match yesterday, the ACT under 14’s had a chance to finish at the top of Group B and contest the semi finals but a 2-nil loss to Northern NSW meant they finished in 5th and had contest the 9/10 playoff such was the competitiveness of the pool.

The 14’s got their championships off to the flyer when they were undefeated after the first three matches but two losses in the final two matches to South Australia and Northern NSW proved their undoing.

“I’m really proud of the boys, the [under] 14’s did a great job, unfortunately two results got away from us towards the end which meant the difference between a possible national championship and ninth place,” Capital Football’s Technical Director Ian Shaw said

For the 15’s, they opened their championships with a 1-all draw against WA but it wasn’t until the fourth game that the ACT 15’s recorded their first victory with a 5-nil defeat of Tasmania, followed by a 3-all draw against Queensland Metro in the final pool match.

Currently the championship groups are based on last year’s results but according to Shaw this creates an uneven distribution of teams between groups.

“It’s really unfortunate, I’m not going to make any excuses but I think the FFA has to take a look at the format because the unevenness between groups played a big part when Capital Football was placed in the more difficult group,” Shaw said.

The ACT boy’s under 15’s preparing for the 2007 National Youth Football Championships in Coffs Harbour this weekend.

The team will feature four Australian representatives with Christopher Bush, Ben Harrington, Danai Gapare and Stephen Domenici all suiting up for the Joeys earlier this year. Along with the internationals, the team is made up of Capital Football Academy players and ACTAS scholarship holders creating a strong and skilful squad.


The ACT will come up against Football West (WA), NSW Metro, South Australia, Tasmania and Queensland Metro in Group A with the top two to proceed to the semi finals with the rest of the group playing off for final standings.

In the 2006 Championships this ACT squad finished in 5th as the ACT Under fourteen representatives.

According to Capital Football’s Technical Director Ian Shaw the results aren’t the be all and end all.

“We’re very pleased with the squad and its strength will certainly turn a few heads in Coffs next week but having said that we don’t base our success on whether we return home as the national champions, it all depends on who handles the situation best on the day. We’re just hoping to mix it with the best and play some good football,” Shaw said.

Eamonn adds: From this week's championship the Joey's Under 17 squad for the first round of Asian qualifiers will be named.

The qualifiers are in Singapore in October.

Australia will play Norht Korea, Malaysia and East Timor in the group stage.

ACT Under 14’s Representatives

The ACT boys Under 14’s squad has been named ahead of the National Championships in Coffs Harbour this weekend with Capital Football to take on some of the nation’s best youth footballers over the week long tournament.



This is the first time this group of boys will be representing the ACT at the FFA National Youth Championships.

“It’s a young squad but I have no doubt that they will enjoy themselves and make the ACT proud. They get the chance to take on a lot of the other states and territories; it’s always a great thrill to be representing your region,” Capital Football’s Technical Director Ian Shaw said

The ACT will come up against Football Queensland Metro, Football NT, Football Queensland Country, South Australia and Northern NSW in Group B with the top two to proceed to the semi finals with the rest of the group playing off for final standings.

The entire squad is made up from the Capital Football Academy.

“It will be a great chance to bench mark our Academy program against those pathway programs from other states and territories and will provide us with a key indicators to determine our strengths and weaknesses” Shaw said.

ACT Under 17 Girl's squad announced

The ACT girls under 17’s squad has been named ahead of the National Championships in Coffs Harbour next month with Capital Football opening the door for a few players who missed out in their own state selection.

With a couple of players unavailable for selection, the ACT has acquired the services of three South Australian shadow players to make up the numbers for the coming nationals.

ACT U17’s coach Ian Shaw is looking forward to mixing it with the best.

“It’s a pleasure to be able to put together a squad for the national titles. The under 17’s squad will be very competitive, but because of a lack of available players from the local region we’ve been able to draft in three shadow players from South Australia which will strengthen our team and be great for the player’s development.”

Shaw said.“I’m really looking forward to taking this group away - there are some really good young players and we have a very competitive team.”

Shaw’s involvement in national championships is very impressive having coached the only ACT boys team to a national title many years ago.

The ACT has been drawn against Tasmania, South Australia, Queensland and NSW in group A with the top two teams to progress to the semi finals.

The ACT PSSA Girls Football squad to compete at the School Sport Australia Nationals in Brisbane in September has been selected.

ACT Under 15 Rep side announced

The ACT girls under 15’s squad has been named ahead of the National Championships in Coffs Harbour next month.
The ACT will come up against Northern Territory, South Australia, Western Australia and Northern NSW in Group A with the top two to proceed to the semi finals with the rest of the group playing off for final standings.

In the 2006 Championships the ACT finished 3rd in their group, then went on to end up 5th overall.
