Are the returning stars giving value?
Craig Moore, Danny Tiatto, Stan Lazaridis, Paul Agostino, Hayden Foxe, Tony Popovic, David Zdrillic, Paul Okon, Ned Zelic, and Ljubo Milicevic and Bobby Petta. All are former Socceroos or in Petta's case a Dutch International. All have come from European leagues to play in the A-League. Some have only played one game. But I can't help wondering what benefit these guys are bringing to the game. Zdrillic has disappointed, Popovic is he really going to be better than Olyroo Nikolai Topor-Stanley…and if so by how much? Okon and Zelic were raved about by many commentators but while Okon played well going forward, defensively he was exposed on many many occasions. Stan the man had a poor first season and of course the luck of the overseas stars deserted him with the drugs fiasco. Foxe is injured, again, Ljubo has been hit by the overseas curse. Even Tiatto who thought he was on to a good thing, was brought back to down to earth by the video recorder midweek. Kevin Muscat and Steve Corica are to my mind the exception. And Petta may well shine this season in his new inside role. So are we getting value for money? There are many reasons why some are missing and its early days for some, but what does an ageing overseas former Socceroo star give us? And are they worth their pay cheque? Fire away.
