First Canberra team named
Is Deco our first marquee?
We're aiming for August 2010 for our A-League debut.
Imagine the scene. The Socceroos at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa in June/July. The feel good factor for football.
2010 August 12: Canberra Stadium. ateam4canberra FC v Sydney FC. Sold Out!!
But who will be in the team? Well I'm naming the first team read on..
Well the great thing as we await the bid, the entry into the A-League, is the talk that will take place around the football clubs of Canberra.
Indeed this week many people have started to think, to dream about the future. Barely was the bid announced and I could see people's eyes alighting to the opportunities, possible or imagined, for themselves, for the City.
So I thought it was time to get the ball rolling, or the team selected.
Possible Line-up, using an amazing 11 players born in or grew up in Canberra:
In goal:
Codey Larkin,
Dane Milanovanovic, Sam Munro, Joe Simunic, Nikolai Topor-Stanley/Luke Pilkington
Kaz Patafta, Shaun Ontong, Matthew Kemp
Taylor Beaton, Kofi Danning, Adam Casey
Sub:
Marquee: Steve Malbranque, Deco, Adrian Mutu, or some other World Game name.
Coach:
Choose from Tom Sermanni, Milan Milanovanovic, Ray Junna, Ned Zelic, Miron Bleiberg, Paul Okon, or Some Dutch bloke!
Supporters Club leader:
Jeremy Butler, with chants passion and atmosphere to die for.
Deco, the Marquee, arrived late, still carrying a knock from the World Cup. But still feeling inferior in a football sense the Canberra club gave him a couple of extra weeks break. But with the new extended season Coach Tom Van Milanvanovic was not too concerned.
Kofi Danning is being chased by Juventus but can stay until Christmas we are told.
"I'm delighted to stay for the first season," said a fired up Danning.
Kaz Patafta and Shaun Ontong did an extra session up Black Mountain as they prepare for the biggest game of their career. Playing to a sold-out crowd in front of friends and family.

Local boy featured in the Sydney Morning Herald last Friday misses out in your Canberra A league team.
It seems as the heading suggest ("THE LOST BOYS") the boy is already lost. Maybe INTER MILAN can release him on loan.

Well done, surely a player that would relish coming home and playing for Canberra in the A League.

This is my dream......Tommy will be our frist coach. Tommy will have the help from Ray, Ned and Andrew Bernal, who will be the fitness/trainer coach. The team name will be The Canberra Nationals Football Club (CNFC). The Marquee player for our frist seven games will be Cristiano Ronaldo (1 million per game) with Michael Ballack doing the rest. The ground will be sold out for the first 4 games due to Ronaldo. We will make the final in Sydney but will lose to Sydney FC 3-2 with Adam Casey scoring all three goals for Sydney. Av home crowd for first season will be 23,000.
Lets make this dream come true and support the beauitful game and the wonderful people making this happen.
and the fact that the weather will be warm and beer will be cold!! cant wait to get the passion and antics flowing.....
Not sure if names have been mentioned on here but have heard the awesome suggestion of being called Capital Punishment FC... shove that up ya date Melbourne Victory
Capital punishment is probably the worst name ever. It's right up there with "The B sharps" of Simpson fame. Funny the first time, then lame, then annoying.
Please stop suggesting it.

Lucas are you talking about Carl Valeri? if so then I'm not expecting him to come back anytime soon, Canberra team or not. If not who are you talking about?
as for Robbie Cattanach, fair call, but he will 2 seasons older by then if he doesn't make the A-League before 2010 I doubt he'll be good enough to start at 25 or 26.
But of course I didn't name the bench...Robbie can always make his mark, to start with from there.
Anyway good to get a few thoughts from you guys.

ok Steven Lustica...not with Inter or anyone else as we speak. Trying to get into AIS.
Still definitely one to watch who could make the breakthrough if his progress continues.
At 19/20 could be in the right place right time.
anon@12:43, you are just full of great ideas. Canberra Nationals, great. We could even have a picture of a nice building on the badge. That will really inspire the kiddies' imaginations. Here are some other great ideas:

And seriously, the best you can imagine is a bunch of overpaid, over-hyped egotist "marquee" players. Your whole vision is too depressing to contemplate.
If Butler's gonna be the supporter leader we'd better get a waiver from the police so they don't chuck him out for swan diving through the roof of the dugout. Again.
Just had another fantastic idea. Capital Punishment is a bit American basketball sounding for my liking, but an awesome name nonetheless. It's my vote for the name of the supporters group. As long as it's the beer sculling, abuse hurling, police escort type supporters group. I'm in.
On another matter, just wondering what has happened to viewing the names that have signed up to support the bid - can't see the 'click on' and read the 1300 plus names - it's a shame as it is good to see if your friends did sign up and hassle those who have not yet. Also the juniors would like to see if their team and club have signed up.
Will it come back?
Are we seriously thinking that age 25 is OLD for a footballer? Catto would fit right in. I'd suggest that some Canberra FC players get thrown in the mix. They aren't totally smashing the rest of the Canberra League for nothing. Nath Denham is the best keeper in Canberra (apart from a poor game against the CCM for the Rockets). Some of the CFC players are ageing, but what about Ivanic, Spaleta and Ison? In fact, if CFC got the chance to play against an A-League team, I'd say that they'd beat most of them. I hear they don't even train properly. Imagine if they trained twice a day!
Adding to my comment, Milovanovic should be the coach of the A-League team hands down. Probably the only coach I've had that knows what he is actually talking about.
