Daily Telly's Gary Linnell
is hardly a journalist worthy of the label.
His latest effort, got into the paper, why is anybody's guess, and his bitter little rant included football in his list. Was he supposed to be funny? Heard it all before Gary.
For the record a dull-scoring game goes for 90 minutes Gary, a dull cricket draw goes for 5 days!! Work it out yourself Gary.
Here's what Gary the Goose had to say....
http://www.news.com.au/dailytelegraph/story/0,22049,24385271-5017479,00.htmlName: Soccer fans.
Crime: Pretentiousness, false and misleading conduct.
The Court says: Despite claims their sport is the true "world game'', will soon become Australia's premier sporting competition and should only be referred to as "football'', indisputable evidence proves soccer has duller draws than cricket and more players who fall to the ground feigning injury than the entire cast of World Wrestling Entertainment.
Sentence: Writing on the blackboard no less than 100 times: "The A-League is nothing more than a dressed-up backwater suburban competition.''

Senior editorial staffers like Gary Linnell don't even bother to admit to their sporting bias at front of these rants - which would readily explain why they target some sports and not their protected favourites - Paul Sheehan is another who uses his seniority pull to publish his pro rugby (mostly undeclared) /anti-football and much else rants in Fairfax papers in this way.
Here is ENews profile on Linnell from 2006 when was head of channel nine news and currents affairs as Eddie McGuire's old mate - ``Garry Linnell, who is the new director of News and Current Affairs, is an old Melbourne westie like Eddie, except Linnell follows the Geelong side and Eddie is of course a Magpie.''
It becomes obvious why large media companies like channel nine, news ltd and increasingly of late even Fairfax rarely cover the game in a positive light when you realise the background of the personnel in key positions - new blood will eventually help.
Yep these old guys like Linnell, FitzSimons, Kent, Mahmoud, Sheehan, Smith and one or two younger guys seem to think it is their duty almost to keep giving it to "soccer"....still the game keeps rising in Australia despite the bitter anti-football journo's...thank god for the internet:)
