Canberra: World Cup to assist A-League bid?
So it's official Australia will bid for the World Cup in 2018....and it should greatly assist the Canberra A-League bid in coming years.
The decision will be made in October 2011. The benefits you can find elsewhere, but for Canberra and football fans in this region it could just be our saving grace.
There will be talk in political, business and social circles for at least three years about the World Cup, football, and the benefits and impacts of a Canberra bid.
And surely this would hugely assist this city to support an A-League team in the not too distant future.
By 2011, should we lose the World Cup bid the Canberra A-League side could well be on the way if not already admitted.
And don't forget Australia is expected to get the 2015 Asia Cup.
The future of the game in Canberra could start to look very rosy. An A-League side, a National Women's league side, and a Youth side, with one or two State League teams as well. And a Futsal side in the Asian Champions League.
That will be our future. It's just a question of time.
The World Cup bid could be Canberra's A-League saviour over the next three years.
How old will your son be in 2018? Imagine playing in the 2018 World Cup in Australia:)

Eamonn, Frank Lowy has made his intentions clear the he wants a 12 team competition, and has stated that another Sydney team and another Melbourne team are the teams that will be included within 2-3 years. Canberra are going to have to wait a lot longer than first hoped for to get a team into the league.
You speak the truth Vicky and Frank gets what he wants I reckon. He also said he wanted a 14 team league eventually.
However, a Canberra bid will take time to garner the community, we're still a bit fragmented, you could say silent, despite the numbers who have played or watched football. We need to come together as one passionate voice.
But who's to say a team won't fall over in the next three years and maybe just maybe we can beat the second Sydney bid. The first Sydney team is hardly a roaring success.
And I can wait 4 years, if we get it right. I've waited 20 to see football in Australia reach these giddy heights.
2 Years Sydney/Melbourne, then with a building World Cup bid, a strong community supported Canberra bid we're in three or four years down the track.
And Townsville and Gold Coast aren't in yet. They have to show the money...or they're out:)
Keep the faith Vicki we will need all the support we can get.
