Belwest takes out Canberra Fed Cup

Belwest won a penalty shoot-out to take out this years Women's Federation Cup.

Hear player interviews on the Nearpost Radio show this week, or catch them on the podcast on this blog on Wednesday, or tune into Channel Vision to see highlights of the men and women's game later in the week.

The game was locked at 0-0 after extra time and Belwest Foxes' Captain Vanessa Burdett scored the decider.

Speaking after the game Burdett didn't know the penalty score, but she knew if she scored her team would win.

"I wasn't really counting, I was too nervous as I was taking the last one. I think the Coach did that on purpose. I hadn't even decided which way I was going to kick it when I kicked it. I thought I'd hit it as hard as I can in the corner and hope the keeper didn't get it, and it worked."

"We won the Cup last year on penalties on the same ground (MacKellar Stadium)so it's a lucky ground for us."

"Jenna Maciejewski played well, it's here first year in goal but she's awesome, Nicole Monks did well, she had a few chances, Michaela Day looked pretty dangerous down the right wing, but we just couldn't put them away, we couldn't finish.

Belconnen United Captain and former Nearpost host Nicole Somi was disappointed to lose on penalties but proud of her players performed.

"Our keeper, Klare Manenica did really well, Millie Black, Erica Weatherly both did well. They haven't played at this level before and they really stepped up.

"We've got a young group of girls, our oldest player is 22.

Despite the loss, Somi said, "It's more positive that we are playing really good football. I was really happy, really proud of the girls. It's one thing to win a game, but if you lose but you are playing good football. It says positive things about the future of the club.
