Canberra makes The Guardian
Big deal. So we don't have a team, we're a Capital City without a football team. Do you have to tell the World?
Read the response I sent to the Guardian below.
Dear Knowledge;
Canberra, Australia. We have no team. Not in the new A-League. Not yet
We have more registered football players than AFL, Rugby League and Rugby Union put together. A record 17,000 this year, a huge pool of junior boys and girls.
Joe Simunic (Croatia) played all his football here, Socceroos Ned Zelic, Carl Valeri and Nikolai Topor-Stanley are just some of the recent Socceroos to come from Canberra. David Beckham's Spanish minder former Reading Captain Andy Bernal is also Canberra born.
The Matildas always have a sprinkling of Canberra talent. Julie Murray one of our best, the current World Cup saw Caitlin Munoz, Lydia Williams, and Sally Shipard all in the squad.
We need circa $6 million (Aussie dollars). for that you get to have a team in the A-League, we have a great stadium already Canberra Stadium 27,000, all games are live on Pay TV. And of course we get to play in Japan, China, Indonesia Iran etc in the Asian Champions League and on pre-season tours.
The Capital City in Australia without a professional football team. It can't last. A population of 450,00 within an hour of the stadium, 800,000 within 3 hours.
Imagine leading your team out in Melbourne in front of 50,000 fans, or in the Asian Champions League to play Urawa (Japan) in front of 60,000.
And all for just $6 million Aussie dollars.
And there is a limit to your spending. We have a Salary Cap of just $1.8 million plus an option of one marquee player. So where in the World can you get a chance to win a league for such a small return?
Surely someone around this World wants a team to call their own.
Mr Knowledge, if you want more drop us a line or read my blog, listen to my podcast/radio show.
cheers
Eamonn
