The Chief has spoken: What do you think?

Canberra United Coach has handed in his report card after five rounds of the W-League season.

He's given the team an overall B, with the forwards falling below the mark. Lydia Williams brings the average up with an A.

Read Robbie's report card and feel free to write what you think....I know you will:)

Enjoy..andit's taken from www.canberraunited.com.au website.....read on.

Canberra United's 1st Semester Report CardWednesday, 26 November 2008 After five rounds of the Westfield W-League, head coach, Robbie Hooker put his Canberra United side under the microscope to analyse the first half of the season. While scoring has been difficult to come by with only four goal, there's been little difficulty in keeping the ball out of the back of our own net with three clean sheets.

Goalkeeper
Comments: We’ve only had to use the one so far. Lydia’s saved us on a few occasions however that’s what she’s there for, that’s what she trains for, so at this stage she’s done her job how we expect her to.

Grade: A

Defense
Comments: Being the backbone of the team, we’ve only conceded four goals in the first five games which is good and two of those goals came from rare mistakes which you won’t see again this year. Three clean sheets says good things about the defensive structure however we’ve probably lacked a little bit of composure at times so there’s certainly some room for improvement.

Grade: B+

Midfield
Comments: Midfield is a strange one because defensively they’ve been the key to a lot of our defensive structure along with the back four, however, when we’re in transition after having won the ball we tend to turn the ball over to quickly rather than try to keep possession. A little bit more composure when we get the ball would be good and a little bit more structured play would be a little bit better as well.

Grade: B

Forwards
Comments: This one’s a double edged sword , because in terms of chance we’ve had by our forward players have been numerous and a lot of those chances have been created individually or with one other player. To do that requires a lot of hard work and skill however on the other side the number of chances we have created but haven’t scored from is a concern.

Grade: C+

Overall
Comments: We’ve still got a lot of room for improvement but I don’t think we’ve been outplayed by any team this year which is a really positive sign. We just need to make sure we get our selves into the finals and from there I think we’ve got the players and the game to maybe even go on and make the final

Grade: B

A+ for Lydia.
Hookers a bit generous to the Defenders who IMO only deserve a "C". 3 clean sheets say more about Lydia than they do about defenders. Grace played really well last game slotting in for the Karate kid. A "B" for the Dubbo Flash. Exciting player to watch. She only needs to be taught by a Forwards coach (NOT Hooker)how to finish. A "C-" for the Glamimports from Qld who have done little to justify wearing green. Munoz please come back to show them how to score goals.

I think he should try some new forwards. Maybe shift Gill and Chapman up front and give jenny Bisset a go in the midfield.

Reckon midfied deserved a B Gill Chapman and Majetski covered for defence on a number of occasions and have provided heaps of opportunities for the forwards.

Gill is a defender and should stay there. Lydia has done well but very little work to do. Half the goals against (2) were really soft and should never have happened. If your looking for an A+ goal keeper Alison Logue of Newcastle is the one. She absolutley destroyed us, we had heaps of opportinities and some pretty good shots on goal and couldn't win. Newcastle had 2 decent opportinities and both went in. They won.

Our midfield is underrated. They have set up the forwards on a number of occasions.

The forwards are letting the team down. Particularly the pair from Qld. "Dubbo Flash" is a huge overstatement. SHe doesn't do anything different from a number of players who run down the sideline. Watch the whole team and you will see a number of speedy players. At least they do their job. The forwards have not done anything at all. The defenders are the backbone of the team. Williams hasn't done much - what she has done has been great, but not had much to do. The defenders are the only ones performing. Even Hooker says the midfield keeps turning over the ball. The defenders pass it forward time and time and time again and they either stuff it up or the forwards do. LEt's hope Crawford and Munoz can show them how it is done. A+ to the defenders and goal keeper.

Rubbish, the midfield of Gill Majetski and Chapman have not only covered for some diabolical defence but they have also created the chances.

The good defenders have been Brush and Slatyer but the defence have certainly have stuffed up badly on occasions (particualrly the big left back).

Can't remember the last tine I saw Munoz play a full game. Certainly hope she lives up to the hype. Easy to be a champ from the side lines.

Know nothing about Crawford.

Hi Eamonn, Great BLOG once again. This is a team sport and all are putting in. I don't like to see people being individually criticised like this.

I saw the CU for the first time of Saturday.
To me they dominated the play and to be honest the defence really did not have that much to do. So there must be a bit of hisory with the criticisms because I couldn't see it.

I would like to the the girls not be so rushed. Sometimes a bit of patience is necessary. There is a lot of potential in what seems to be a young determined side.

Keep going CU. Ignore the critics and believe in yourselves. Results will come.

A bit of selective reading going on here. Hooks said the midfield was the 'key' to the defensive structure and the defence also lacked composure at times. You can read anything into anything if you want.

At the end of the day we have had many, many scoring opoortunities (that is not a defensive thing) we have failed to finish which is not good.

The ball is there we just need put it away. Good luck in Perth girls

I agree the midfield has been good, but the forwards have not been doing their jobs. Definitely Kiting has given away two goals by stupid mistakes, she shouldn't be on the field, but the defenders have one of the best records in the w-league. Canberra United has dominated most games, but now the forwards have to start doing their job and score some goals. I don't care how fast SYkes is, it means nothing when you don't score. Let's hope Crawford and Munoz can show them how it is done tomorrow. Take off the QLd pair, they are useless.

I think it's easy to criticise individuals about mistakes but you have to realise that a lot of these girls are playing in a national league for the first time. CU isn't Manchester United so I should expect the girls to make the occasional error but it's all relative. Rarely does CU make a mistake, it's just unfortunate that a couple of those mistakes had lead to a goal. I'm sure those errors won't be made again.

All the critisism sounds like the girls are struggling this season, do you need reminding that CU is sitting in the top four and only one win away from a place in the top two.

Personally the girls have done a wonderful job so far this season considering the majority of the team comes from the ACT which says wonders for the local talent.

Not sure about everyone else, but the marks given by Hooks are positive. All A's and B's with the exception of the strikers who have shown plenty of promise for the future.

Congratulations to CU for a fantastic season to date and good luck against Perth.

These girls need your support if they're to make the finals.

Canberra United fan!

If the girls want this league (the closest we have to professional footbal lfor women) to be taken seriously and continue in future years, then they have to take the criticism with the praise. Otherwise, they will have lived up to the reputation of women's footballers being sissys. CU are doing very well and good luck in Perth. Just hope we can score some goals for a change. The Defenders have done their job, now it is the forwards turn.

Its is interesting that the majority of the comments are negative and that you are not strong enough to put your name to the criticism. I'm pretty sure that when the girls do make a mistake or don't get the ball past the keeper that they know that they have done wrong or feel bad. Spend some time with them after the game and see how they feel. This team has only been playing together for a short period of time and are doing well to be where they are on the ladder. What changes would you like to see, other than just getting rid of them. It was good to read in one comment that the Ash needs more training on how to finish - Yes she does and would welcome the opportunity, like anyone would who wants to better their skills. This team has a great base and will only get better with time. I'm in Perth to give support to the girls and hope that they do well. In future can we agree to put some form of identity to our comments so we can refer to them. Go hard girls and show the doubting supporters that you can do it.

I don't think Munoz is playing.

I agree that the girls should take the criticism with praise, however if in making comments you are bagging out and naming a player or players or playing position/s, make sure you add your name to your comment. Otherwise it is gutter talk and no one should pay attention to your comment.

I agree with the above comments about putting a name to your comment if you are crticising a player/posotion. It is easy to write this stuff in a blog and remain anonymus. How about showing some guts yourselves??

Go Canberra Utd, a new team that is promoting local players and despite the short time in preparing as a team have done Canberra proud. Hopefully whoever is up front will gel and convert their chances.

I would like to see any attacking player with a good chance at having a go at goal. It does sometimes seem that the attackers look for the best possible option upon shooting rather than backing themselves. But hopefully with the hard work put in at training and confidence growing the goals will come.

Good luck against Perth girls and hopefully the hard work will pay off with a victory!

Eamonn, any chance of removing the 'Anonymous' option when posting?

Eamonn said...

I've removed the Anonymous option for now....

hopefully this will aid the discussion away from personal attacks.

The team has only being going five weeks, are not professional, but people seem to take it and individual players performances so seriously.

Does anyone remember when we didn't have a team, weren't in the top four, or have a pathway for our SEVENTEEN year olds to try and improve....

judging by the comments on here over the last few weeks some people simply expect too much of individuals and their football teams.

I'm a glass half-full guy and personally have been delighted to see a League, a team, and many young and local players competing nationally.

And while we might not have scored the most, we ain't let in the most either....

and we are 4th, in a National League...did anyone notice that?

And we'll flog Perth today....1-0:)

This is a much better way thank you Eamonn. I am in no way a professional player or critic of the game but I do understand how these players feel well they are bagged out simply because they didnt win. They are a young team but together with the older players and a good coach they are coming together and continually learning and improving their skills.

Come on Canberra get behind this team and give them all your support, lets make next weeks home game huge. Remember we all have bad days.
