Matildas 2 New Zealand 1

Canberra's Amy Chapman scored her first goal for the Matildas in their 2-1 win over New Zealand this afternoon on the Sunshine Coast.

"Collette McCallum collected the ball and drove in a great cross and I came in at the far post and volleyed it in. It felt great to score my first goal and I can't wait to tell my family," said an excited Chapman after the game.

"I started in right midfield, and to get my second cap and first goal was great. It's great to show that even with so many players missing we can still compete at this level. We want to finish with a big win on Wednesday to show we are better than New Zealand."

Kate Gill scored the other Australian goal.

The Matildas play their third game on Wednesday.

FFA Report below

The Matildas claimed a series win over trans-Tasman rivals New Zealand with a 2-1 victory today in the second outing of a three-match series on the Sunshine Coast.

Despite the narrow scoreline Australia were deserved winners laying siege to the Kiwi goal for lengthy periods of the second half and were unlucky to not claim a greater winning margin.

Kate Gill opened the scoring in the 22nd minute before New Zealand's Emma Kete equalised five minutes before the interval. Canberra-based striker Amy Chapman scored the winner and her first goal for the national team two minutes into the second half.

Inspirational midfielder Collette McCallum was the provider for both goals. Gill finishing with a neat low 20 metre drive, and then Chapman scoring with a smart close-range volley from a pinpoint McCallum cross.

The second half saw Matildas striker Sarah Walsh twice denied by the woodwork, while Kiwi goalkeeper Jenny Bindon made a number of outstanding saves including a fingertip effort to prevent a Cheryl Salisbury header from crossing the line.

Coach Tom Sermanni was again limited with the amount of experienced players available and seven players took the field with two caps or less for the Matildas to their name. Notable amongst these was the only debutant, late call-up from the Queensland Academy of Sport Brooke Spence, who last year captained Australia to the Softball World U-19 Championship. Spence following in the footsteps of Ellyse Perry who debuted for the Matildas last August and has since represented Australia in cricket.

Absent from today's match through injury were Heather Garriock and Lisa De Vanna, while several other World Cup stars are absent from the series including Di Alagich, Kate McShea, Thea Slatyer, Alicia Ferguson and Joanne Peters amongst them.

"I'm very happy to win the game, though I felt we should have scored more goals given the number of chances we had and I also felt that the score didn't reflect the quantity of goalscoring opportunities we created," said Sermanni.

"However I'm very pleased with the way we performed considering the number of changes to the team and the number of young players on the field.

"These games continue to be of great benefit, and allowed some players the opportunity to show me what they can do at this level."

Australia, who the first match on Saturday 2-0, will meet New Zealand again in the final match of the series on Wednesday.

The Matildas are preparing for the 2008 AFC Women's Asian Cup which will be held from May 28 – June 8, 2008, in a venue yet to be decided.

And they're off....Who? The Matildas

The Matildas are on the move.

Football in Australia, women's football, doesn't have enough depth or rewards to keep the main players so they're off for better experience, to test themselves.

It's not big money, no Agents involved, so don't be thinking it's all roses, but off they are.

Lisa De Vanna is off to Sweden, Kate Gill is just trying to match her degree in Psychology to a Uni/country where she can study and play football.

Caitlin Munoz and Collette McCallum are off to join the Pali Blues in Los Angelos, with team-mate Sarah Walsh joining them after the Asia Cup.

Matildas head to the World Cup on Saturday.

"We're in the bruisers group!"

Matildas keeper Lydia Williams at the Nearpost studio.

The Matildas head off to the 5th FIFA Women’s World Cup in China on Saturday.

Coach Tom Sermanni believes it’s the best ever Matildas side and hopes are high that they can become the first Australian side to win a game at a World Cup and progress beyond the group stage.

Capital Football is well represented. Former Belnorth junior Caitlin Munoz, Tuggeranong United and Woden Valley junior Lydia Williams and Wagga junior Sally Shipard will all be on the plane. All have had problems with injuries in recent months but they are coming good at the right time.

The Matildas are in a tough group. Lydia Williams calls it, “The bruisers group.”
Norway, Canada and Ghana are all physical sides and all have done well at previous World Cups.

Norway won the World Cup in 1993 and was runners-up in 1997. Canada came 4th in 2003. Ghana is one of only two teams Australia has drawn with in the finals. The other is old foe China.

The Matildas have played a lot of Asia opposition recently, mainly due to Football Federation Australia’s move into Asia. Olympic qualifiers and games against China have been the major warm-ups.

A lack of games against European sides may be a concern for Sermanni and the team, but until recently the focus was on Olympic qualifiers.

The Matildas have just completed a two match tour of China, beating the world ranked number 10 side 3-1 and 3-2. Caitlin Munoz scored in the 3-2 victory in front of 52,000 fans in Tianjin.

The Matildas are a mix of experience and youth. Captain Cheryl Salisbury is the most capped Australian footballer ever. She currently has 113 caps. Salisbury will marshal the defence with keeper Melissa Barbieri and Di Alagich close by.

In midfield expect to see Collette McCallum and Sally Shipard bringing youth and energy to the side. Both played in last years Under 20 World Cup in Russia for the Young Matildas.

Up front Caitlin Munoz and Kate Gill will have the pacy Sarah Walsh, Lisa De Vanna and Jo Peters and Jo Burgess in support.

Coach Sermanni has plenty of options in the squad and it is perhaps this strength that will give the team its best chance of progressing from the group stage.
And great news for football fans as all Australian games will be shown live on SBS in prime time.

SBS TV will broadcast a selection of matches from the 2007 FIFA Women’s World Cup including LIVE coverage of ALL Matildas matches, both semi-finals and the final.

Matildas 3 Ex-Socceroos 3

Kate Gill, Jo Burgess and Collette McCallum scored against a Coaches all-star team at the Matildas camp at the AIS on Saturday.

Ex-Rangers star Ian Ferguson , Socceroo Captain Tony Vidmar and Queensland Roars Stuart MacClaren all took the field.

Matildas Coach Tom Sermanni was pleased with the game, "it was great. The Matildas really enjoyed themselves, to test themselves against real quality players. The guys see things so early in a game, many of them are still playing at a high level. The speed and distance which the guys can kick the ball was a noticeable difference. But we have a good structure and physically the girls did well. It was a great football test."
