ACT Youth Rockets to play Sydney FC?

Majura junior, Kofi Danning to star for Sydney FC Youth and Sam Munro in the Sydney squad see below....

ACT Young Rockets have been training for the past four weeks and look like they have a number of fixtures against A-League Youth teams lined up.

They could start as early as the opening A-League Youth League round against Sydney FC if all goes to plan on Friday 26th September, with further games against the Central Coast, Newcastle Jets and possibly Melbourne Jets to follow.

It is a great opportunity for the young players of the ACT and provides them a chance to show case their skills.

Sydney FC Press Release starts here:

Sydney set for start of Youth League

In just a few weeks time there’ll be an important new player on the Australian football landscape, with the FFA’s National Youth League competition set to kick off in the last weekend of September.

After months of trials and tribulations, Sydney FC youth coach, Steve O’Connor has now finalised his squad, and he’s excited about the opportunity the league will offer the next generation of Australian footballers.

“I think it is important because it gives pathways for all out talented young players so that they know the way for them to get to the A-League is by getting into a Youth League team,” said O’Connor.

With most of Sydney’s players coming from the ranks of the New South Wales Premier League, O’Connor has had to bide his time waiting to assemble his squad, and the side has only recently stepped up its preparations for the coming season.

Despite the slow start, squad-members, Matt Jurman and Robbie Mileski have already picked up first-team experience during the opening rounds of the Hyundai A-League season, and the Sydney mentor is keen to ensure all his young charges appreciate the chance they’re about to be given.

“I want them to be focused on that opportunity and be aware of it that they’re playing for positions,” explained O’Connor. “Hopefully they’ll put a bit of pressure on the senior players because in some respects they’ve had a bit of a charmed life over the last 3 years without very much pressure, so this changes the landscape a little bit.”

There are only 12 places in FC’s Youth Team, with the side to be bolstered week-to-week by un-selected players from the senior squad.

‘Football Superstar’ winner, Adam Hett was one of Sydney’s first signings, but a season ending knee injury has seen the Perth player replaced in O’Connor’s final side.

“It’s unfortunate for Adam but we’ll keep track of his recovery with an eye to next season,” said the former AIS Coach. “His bad luck was somebody else’s good fortune though, I suppose, but it’s all done and dusted now and we’ll see how we go in the competition.”

This Saturday the entire Youth Team will be introduced to the Sydney faithful at the SFS, at half-time in FC’s Hyundai A-League clash with Adelaide United.

Sydney will enjoy a bye in the first round of the National Youth League and will begin its campaign on October 4 against Queensland.

The final squad is as follows:

Canberra Youth to shine on a National Stage.

Great news this morning in the Nation's Capital. ACT Rockets (Youth) are expected to play a number of games between October and Febuary against A-League Youth sides. Nothing is confirmed but progess is looking good, very good.

Negotiations are at an early stage but signs are very promising.

Adelaide United, Melbourne Victory, Central Coast Mariners are just some of the clubs expected to play a Canberra Youth side.

And there is also a game lined up against Illarwarra Youth in the coming months.

The competition for places is expected to be fierce. With ACTAS, ACT Rockets Youth and other players all looking for a start.

It is proposed that players will have to commit to three trainings per week. An increase from what all Premier League Clubs currently undertake.

But what an opportunity for the Youth of Canberra.

Playing week in week out in front of A-League Youth Coaches with a place at an A-League Club up for grabs.

There's more to come no doubt but probably the most exciting development in Men's football in Canberra for a long time.

So guys the (short) ACT season maybe be over for some, but it's time to get training and get your boots back on:)

Who knows you could play against Kaz Patafta, Shaun Ontong, Jason Naidovski, Michael Zullo, Nick Tsatalios, Even Berger, even an over-age Grant Brebner, Stuart Musialik or Dez Giraldi.

Games are hoped to take place before the W-League games but again this will depend on a number of factors not least the FFA.

ACT Premier League Wrap and ACT Rockets to miss out?

ACT Rockets to miss Win Stadium game?
Fed Cup winners thrashed at home, Woden Valley win Lifeline Cup and move off the bottom, Belconnen, Tuggeranong win.

All the ACT Men's Premier scores below but the big and disappointing news from my perspective is the ACT Rockets Illawarra clash pencilled in to be played at the Win Stadium before a Sydney FC home game looks to be quashed.

Capital Football are unable to change the Premier League fixtures it would appear. CEO Heather Reid will be on the Nearpost on Tuesday so we'll get the update then.

But if it's true the game is cancelled due to local fixture constraints why can't the players selected just go.

As much as Canberra City v Belconnen or Canberra FC O'Connor Knights is a big game, a chance for the players selected to play at the SFS could be the highlight of a local player's careers.

So if the game is on the cards to be played at Win Stadium, I say change the Men's draw, or the clubs could just release the players, although I guess many people would want to go and watch.

Ask the players selected what they would prefer. I reckon I'm right:) If I'm not let me know.

Anyway here are the scores from the weekend.

Capital Football Men's Premier League CANBERRA OLYMPIC 6 (S Barsley 2, O Wiederkehr 2, T Dries, A Butt) bt O'CONNOR KNIGHTS 0 at O'Connor Enclosed Oval.

Lifeline Cup:
Woden Valley defeated Canberra City 2-1 with goals from Jon Caggiano (signed up for on A-League poll:) and Marcia Zygmunt, (signed up) and Pat Ross-Magee replied for City.

Belconnen defeated ANU 4-0 with Danny Macor's replacement David Leet scoring a Macor like three, including a penalty. Matt Valeri got the other.

Coach Steve Forshaw (signed up) said his side, "didn't play well in the first half, but I'm delighted with the result, on a bumpy field it was a good performance.

Tuggeranong United beat Queanbeyan City 2-0 bursting Queanbeyan's recent good run.
19 year old Dale Westmore and Mark Shields scored for the victors. Andrew Bobinskas missed a penalty.

Next week Olympic take on Steve Forshaw's Belconnen. Forshaw said, "With Canberra FC so far ahead, the two sides have nothing to do but attack. It should be a great game, I'm expecting a feast of football."

Table.

Table: p pts

Mariners rampant, Pilkington impresses

Canberra Youth: Still everything to play for.

Central Coast Mariners defeated ACT Rockets 4-0 at Deakin Oval tonight. The Mariners responded to Lawrie McKinna's harsh words this morning.

And Woden Valley's Luke Pilkington was singled out for praise by McKinna in the Youth game played earlier.

"We're back down to Canberra for the Jets game (July 12 Canberra Stadium) and we'll get a few of the Young Rockets and Under 21's training with us," said McKinna.

Russ Gibbs was at the game and rang through this report.

Mariners 4 ACT Rockets 0

The Mariners cruised to a 3-0 half-time lead with goals from Predrag Vogic (14 mins) Frank Lagana (38) and former Socceroo Sasho Petrovski on the stroke of half-time. Matt Osman returning from a long-term injury scored the fourth in the second half.

Belconnen keeper Alex Connell came on for Mariners keeper Andrew Redmayne in the second half.

Despite pre-match speculation Danny Vukovic did not play.

McKinna was happy with the performance. "We had words this morning about the Belconnen performance being unacceptable. I told them places in the squad are still up for grabs.

"We played some good football in the first half. Some good moves and our support play was superb. Credit to the ACT they put us under pressure in the second half."

Rockets Coach Dean Urginic said, "The score didn't reflect the performance. We were a bit panicky on occasions. But we definitely improved in the second half. We kept possession, tracked our runners."

Adam Spaleta and John Ison had good games. Right back Justin Selkirk got the nod of approval from McKinna as well.

Canberra FC striker Paul Ivanic played in the old National Soccer League reflected on what might have been, "I thought I'd scored but the keeper (Andrew Redmayne) made a great save. I think a few of the boys were a bit overwhemled in the first half. The main difference at this level is you have to think quicker. The Mariners are also that much stronger and fitter."

When asked if he thought he get more time against Tuggeranong on the weekend Ivanic simply smiled!

ACT Rockets (Youth 2 ACTAS 1

Tim Cole scored the opener in the 34th minute for the ACT Rockets (Youth) tonight at Deakin Stadium. The match was watched by Central Coast Mariners Development Manager Alex Tobi. Tobin is looking to bolster his Mariners Youth team. But with contracts as low as $2500 per year would anyone take the contract if offered?

Dean Tomeski hit an equalizer for Milan Milovanovic's ACTAS side in the 72nd minute, before Yianni Karabalas sealed the win for the Rockets ten minutes from the end.

ACT ROCKETS v CENTRAL COAST MARINERS

Match Report
ACT Rockets 0 Central Coast Mariners 4

By Russ Gibbs

A ruthless Central Coast Mariners racked up a convincing four-nil victory over the ACT State Representative team, the Rockets, on a chilly Friday evening at Deakin Oval in Canberra. First half goals from Predrag Bojic, Frank Lagana and Sasho Petrovski were added to by a late strike from substitute Matthew Osman as the Mariners rounded out their pre-season trip to the nation’s Capital in some style.

After a disappointing performance against local ACT Premier League outfit Belconnen United two days previously, a match in which they were rescued from a draw by a ninetieth minute winner from Belconnen’s own Taylor Beaton, the A-League side were given a royal dressing down by coach Lawrie McKinna and it showed in their opening half performance as they relentlessly took advantage of any mistakes made by the home team to roar into an unassailable three goal lead.

Striker Frank Lagana almost gave the Mariners a dream start inside the first minute, pouncing onto a through ball to fire a low drive that Nathan Denham did well to block to his right.

It wasn’t long before the professionals took the lead though as a near-post flick from a corner found Predrag Bogic unmarked on the far post and the triallist was left with the simplest of tasks to poke the ball into the unguarded net.

Whatever McKinna had said to his charges at the Thursday morning training session appeared to be having the desired effective as the visitors doubled their lead seven minutes from the interval.

Frank Lagana collected a superb ball over the top before unleashing a sublime chip over the advancing Denham and into the far corner of the net. By this stage the Rockets, who appeared a little overwhelmed in the opening half an hour, had begun to find their feet a little.

However, the much vaunted strike duo of Goran Veljanovski and Paul Ivanic were left with only scraps to feed off and largely untroubled Andrew Redmayne in the Mariners goal.

The pace of the match was a telling tale for the Rockets who, at times, struggled to come to grips with the slick passing moves and instant control of the Mariners side.

Full-back Justin Selkirk, of the O’Connor Knights, was one who shone for the home team negating the attacking forays of Dean Heffernan and Ahmad Elrich to some effect.

Canberra FC central defender Jon Ison was also in good form but both were powerless to prevent Sasho Petrovski taking the score to 3-0 before half-time. The striker had only been on the pitch for three minutes when he forced a shot through Denham on the near-post to start what was a lively night for the under-pressure forward.

After the interval Dean Ugrinic and Scott Conlon changed tactics slightly and the pace of Oliver Wiederkehr and David Kemp began to cause some headaches for McKinna.

Rockets skipper Paul Ivanic nearly brought the home crowd to its feet with a curling right foot shot from the edge of the penalty area that seemed destined for the net until Redmayne produced a stunning save diving full length to his left to palm the ball away for a corner. A quite exquisite save from a shot that seemed destined for the goal.

Mariners substitute Matthew Osman supplied a well-taken fourth goal of the evening, capping a lively twenty-two minute cameo on his return from injury, which would have pleased the Central Coast coaching staff. Osman slipped his marker and advanced on Rockets substitute ‘keeper Brett Dickens, before slipping a neat shot past the Tuggeranong United stopper’s attempted block to complete the scoring.

In the end the professionals simply had too much in the locker for their amateur counterparts, but it was a good night’s entertainment watched by an appreciative crowd and will prove a valuable learning experience to all the ACT player’s involved.

Match Reaction

Lawrie McKinna (Head Coach, Central Coast Mariners): “This was a good performance compared to Wednesday; we were a totally different side. We played some great football in the first half and their ‘keeper had to make two or three good saves.

I was happy with our movement and the support play was excellent. Full credit to the ACT team they put us under pressure in the second half when they out the fliers on, there is a fair bit of pace in that team and they pinned us back for a while. I wasn’t impressed by the performance on Wednesday. We were not switched on and Belconnen made it very hard for us.

I made it clear to the players that they need to prepare correctly for matches like these and, yes, we had a few words about it. I’ve got six or seven players unavailable through injury or international duty so the pressure is on the guys in this squad, but overall I’m happy.

As for the Youth players we watched (in the Youth Rockets v ACTAS match that preceded the main game) young Luke Pilkington looked promising and caught the eye. We are looking to organise a get together for the young players when we come down again in a few weeks for the Newcastle Jets match so we will take another look at some of them then.”

Dean Ugrinic (Head Coach, ACT Rockets): “I thought we were a little bit panicky in the first half, but in fairness I don’t think the score reflected the performance. We defended well and they scored their goals off our mistakes.

"When we managed to get the ball down we played some good football and we had much better possession in the second half and were able to execute some of the stuff we have been working on in training.

"After the break we started tracking their runners more effectively and for a first run out for this squad it was really, really good. This match just goes to show that Canberra needs a top-level outfit so that we do not fall behind the other regions too far in terms of our development. As for our players, Justin Selkirk was outstanding and both Jon Ison and Adam Spaleta were fantastic.”

Scott Conlon (Assistant Coach, ACT Rockets): “In a short time that we had our squad together we did our best to formulate a game plan and take it out there and to some extents we did that.

"A lot of their training ground set pieces and drills caught us out, but we tightened up in the second half. It was plain the Mariners didn’t want to lose this evening and they needed the result after Wednesday’s performance. They were clinical and when we did make mistakes in the wrong areas of the field they punished us.”

Paul Ivanic (Captain, ACT Rockets): “We played really well in the second half when we pressed on them and it was a great learning experience. Maybe we were a bit overwhelmed in the first half but it was obvious that they could think quicker and were more physically stronger than us. It was definitely a step up in class. I thought I had scored at one stage but the ‘keeper made a good stop.”

Justin Selkirk (Defender, ACT Rockets): “I had an absolute ball and enjoyed every minute of it even though it finished 4-0! I am from the Central Coast and you don’t get the chance to play against teams like this every day of the week. We made some errors, but we played much smarter in the second half on what was a fast and very slippery ground.

"I have loved playing with all these guys for the past month and I believe we have learned a lot from each other, especially our attitude and enthusiasm which was awesome again. Even when we were down everything was so positive.”

• Earlier in the evening in a special trial match organised to showcase the talent in the ACT, the ACT Youth Rockets defeated the ACTAS side 2-1 in a keenly fought encounter.

A fine headed goal from Tim Cole after thirty-four minutes gave the Youth Rockets the lead in the first half before Dean Tomeski side-footed home a neat equaliser for ACTAS with eighteen minutes remaining.

The Youth Rockets grabbed the spoils when substitute Yianni Karabalis netted the match-winning goal in the 82nd minute from close range. Friday Local Wrap:

Taylor Beaton: What he needs to do, Canberra's Matildas head-off, Rockets to play tonight, Next Young Canberrans to impress Alex Tobin, and Amy Taylor get her boots on Football Superstars.

Central Coast Mariners Lawrie McKinna: Taylor Beaton was confident, stepped up, gave short give and goes, and when he made a mistake he just got on with the game. Everyone makes mistakes, but it affects young players confidence, that's what we watch.

Mariners Iain Ferguson, "Taylor did well, very well the other night. Can he do it again on Friday and then we'll play a game in Sydney on Tuesday. We're looking for consistency now."

Matildas: Caitlin Munoz, Amy Chapman and Lydia Williams selected for China games.

ACT Rockets take on the Mariners at Deakin Oval tonight. Alex Tobin will watch the Young Rockets and ACTAS boys from 5pm. So with 10-12 youth places to fill and the whole of North Sydney to choose from (don't tell Sydney FC) the young Canberrans will have to perform. Should be a cracker and good luck lads.

And we can expect to see former Canberran and Matilda Amy Taylor put the boots back on in an upcoming edition of Fox 8's Football Superstar. And Amy's hoping there will be a second series. We'll keep you posted.

Meet the Rockets

It should be a cracker of a confrontation.

Russ Gibbs gives the lowdown on the ACT players to take on the Mariners this Friday.

MEET THE ROCKETS

By Russ Gibbs

Gathering together a diverse group of players to mould into a team to represent a state is no easy proposition. Inevitably, given the various opinions of the selection committee, there will be some highly talented individuals that will miss out. For the 2008 version of the ACT Rockets, re-invented after a four year hiatus,

Capital Football have chosen two coaches whose respective teams like to play football by keeping possession and attacking at pace. Having a concept of how a side should play is fine, but who has been selected to carry out these ideals?

Coaches Dean Ugrinic and Scott Conlon have selected an eclectic mix of individuals, each with their own unique abilities. Over the last four weeks the group has trained together in an attempt to field a side that will be a proud representation of football in the Capital.

Here, we briefly profile what you can expect from the players picked to represent the ACT in the clash against the Central Coast Mariners at Deakin Football Stadium on Friday 27th June.

Coaches: Softly-spoken O’Connor Knights head coach Dean Ugrinic is the man tasked with masterminding the Rockets to a competitive performance against the Mariners.

Formerly a player with Belconnen United, Canberra Deakin and the University of Canberra at local Premier League level, his ideas hold the key to success. Assisting Ugrinic is Tuggeranong United coach Scott Conlon.

Conlon, who was voted ACT Coach of the Year in 2007, plied his on-field trade with Canberra Cosmos, Canberra Deakin and Gungahlin Juventus as a distinguished midfielder of some note, as well as enjoying a stint overseas at Harrogate Town in the UK.

Goalkeepers:

Between the posts coaches Ugrinic and Conlon can rely on two knowledgeable, top quality shot-stoppers. The athletic Nathan Denham was the rock between the posts for Canberra FC in their treble-winning season last year and his commanding presence and vocal attributes should ensure that the Mariners are made to work hard for goals.

Brett Dickens of Tuggeranong United brings a wealth of experience to the squad having been a former Rockets goalkeeper and Brisbane Lions representative. ‘Dicko’s’ main qualities are his excellent sense of positioning and superb reflexes.

Defenders:

Agile and quick Canberra FC’s John Ison is built very much in the mould of the modern-day defender. Visually aware, and with the ability to read a game, his pace and physical prowess mean he is a hard man to beat.

Ison’s distribution from the back will be a key component of the Rockets game.

Belconnen United defender Matt Valeri brings a harder edge to the ACT back-line without compromising its ball-playing ability. Comfortable carrying the ball from the back and strong in the air the Blue Devils stopper looks to be an excellent foil for Ison in a solidly built Rockets back-four.

Stopper Steve Rezzo, who plays his club football at the O’Connor Knights, is a tough-tackling, no-nonsense centre-back/stopper who belies his physical size by showing excellent technique when in possession. Rezzo is one of four Knights in the squad. Rezzo’s team mate at club level, David Brouwer, is a solid and technical right-footed full back who is most at home collecting the ball and distributing it to his wingers.

Brouwer possess good pace and is often found overlapping his more attacking Knights colleagues. When in position to do so he delivers some devilishly accurate crosses from the flank. Unfortunately a medial ligament tear put paid to Brouwer’s chance to shine and his place in the squad was taken by Lucas Roth.

The versatile Roth, who is shortly to leave for the USA and a scholarship, can play anywhere along the back line but is most at home as a sweeper/stopper/centre-half. His composure on the ball and coolness under pressure will be a major benefit to the Rockets against their more experienced opponents.

Midfielders:

Across the middle of the park Ugrinic and Conlon are gifted with a variety of talent that can create chances and put them away themselves. The silky skills and hard-working ethos of Adam Spaleta, Canberra FC, are the perfect complement to the attacking style this team threatens.

With the added bonus of being able to play further forward, if required, Spaleta brings a touch of class to the central midfield area. Canberra Olympic’s midfield triumvirate of Victor Yanes, Trent Flanigan and young tyro Oliver Wiederkehr bring a neat combination into the mix. Flanigan, an Australian Futsalroo international, has quick feet allied to a quick mind which enables him to see opportunities that his forwards readily take advantage of, making Flanigan one to watch

Wiederkehr is a winger of rare talent. With a low centre of gravity he is able to side-step his way at pace through the tightest of defences and his sheer speed will be a bonus out wide should he be given the chance to run at the Mariners defensive line. Yanes, who was joint ACT Player of the Year in 2007, is another with a stack of tricks and the vision to make use of the space he creates with his undoubted talent.

His creative skills could be the key to unlocking the Mariners back four with his perceptive passes a feature of Canberra Olympic’s matches this term. Woden Valley captain Marcin Zygmunt possess a lethal shot and a wide-range of passing, over both short and long distances.

The powerfully built central midfielder allies pace with power and is a difficult man to stop when in full stride with most of Woden’s attacking play starting at his feet. A surprise choice to some, Pat Ross-McGee has been impressive in training and certainly deserves his place amongst the elite. The ball-playing Canberra City midfielder has a dynamic running style and is invariably found in the right position to keep attacks flowing.

Not one to shy his defensive duties Ross-McGee’s tracking back and covering are also excellent. The engine-room of the O’Connor Knights midfield, Justin Selkirk, is a tall central midfielder who is the hub of the action at O’Connor Enclosed. A defensive midfielder with a huge tank of petrol, he will run all day, and is renowned for his perceptive delivery and for covering huge swathes of the pitch throughout the ninety minutes.

Strikers:

In the attacking department the Rockets are blessed with some terrific strikers, each with a devastating eye for goal. Elusive Canberra Olympic forward/midfielder Travis Dries is equally at home in the centre of midfield or out on the wing as sometimes utilised by his club.

The 2006 ‘Golden Boot’ has pace to burn, trickery and an uncanny knack of scoring spectacular goals as evidenced throughout his Premier League career with Woden Valley, Tuggeranong United and latterly Olympic.

Canberra FC centre-forward Paul Ivanic likes to drop deep from where he can use his blistering acceleration to dart into goal scoring positions, and once in, he rarely misses as his eleven goals so far this season testify.

Tall and powerful, yet equally as good on the floor as in the air, Ivanic should prove a real handful for the Mariners defence. Completing the trio of attackers is O’Connor Knights hit-man Goran Veljanovski. The talented and skilful forward has a wonderful touch and a sharp-turn and is a prolific finisher of chances. Veljanovski grabbed a mind-boggling eleven goals in the Knights successful Federation Cup campaign and hasn’t stopped scoring since – a dangerous and frighteningly consistent player.

Queanbeyan City front man Goran Josifovski was added to the squad as a standby player at the initial selection meeting. Josifovski is yet another player with a good touch, quick feet and an eye for the target. He has been in excellent form for his club in recent weeks finding the net on a regular basis and kick-starting Queanbeyan’s resurgence in the ACT Premier League.

On paper it looks like a formidable squad. Every player has been selected on merit for their ability to play precise football at pace. This requires a decent first touch, vision and awareness of the positioning of team-mates and opponents alike.

On the evidence of the sessions to date Ugrinic and Conlon have chosen well. It just remains to be seen whether this group has the underpinning qualities required to take on the 2007 A-League grand Finalists. It should be a cracker of a confrontation.

ATTACKING TALENT TO TERRORISE MARINERS

Russ Gibbs writes: With only nine days until the big match with the Central Coast Mariners, the ACT Rockets....

By Russ Gibbs

With only nine days until the big match with the Central Coast Mariners, the ACT Rockets held their third training session at the AIS Football Fields on a mild, yet cool, Wednesday evening on the 18th June.

Coaches Dean Ugrinic and Scott Conlon were all too aware that time is swiftly running out to mould an eclectic group of talented individuals into a team to strike fear into the hearts of their illustrious visitors.

The scourge of the unavailability of players to make sessions reared its head again with Canberra Olympic midfielder Trent Flanigan and Queanbeyan City standby striker Goran Josifovski, who has been in scintillating form in recent weeks, unable to make training.

Indeed, it’s been a tough week for Ugrinic and Conlon with original selection David Brouwer (O’Connor Knights) forced to withdraw from the squad after tearing a medial ligament in his knee. The highly talented Canberra Olympic stopper Lucas Roth is drafted in to take his place.

With Steve Rezzo also doubtful it’s a big blow for the Rockets preparations. “We have unfortunately lost David (Brouwer) for the Mariners match,” Ugrinic confirmed, “but in Lucas Roth we believe we have a great replacement who should fit in nicely with our game plan. Steve may make the match, but at the moment it’s unclear.”

The evening sessions once again focused on possession and the need to keep the ball and move it at pace to really test out the Central Coast Mariners movement.

Canberra Olympic midfielder/striker Travis Dries is under no illusions about how tricky the game will be. “We know that their decision making and fitness will be that much higher than ours but we are working on rectifying that,” he commented.

The twenty-five year old attacking player has been impressed with the way the Rockets have approached the task to date. “Dean (Ugrinic) has been focusing on what is required to compete on Friday week,” Dries continued, “and that is the ability to step up our game to their level and try and match it with them across the field.”

Dries, who won the ACT Golden Boot from an advanced attacking midfield role back in 2006 is conscious of how he can improve his game. “I definitely need to work on my fitness!” he said. “I would say that my speed is my greatest asset and at Olympic we have tried to isolate defenders so I can run at them – that was where I got a lot of goals from in 2006.”

One player who will be familiar with the way the Mariners set about the game next week is central midfield lynchpin Marcin Zygmunt. The Woden Valley captain had a trial with the Mariners a year ago and talks glowingly of their set-up.

“It went really well,” he said. “It opened up my eyes to what is required to make it at the highest level of the game. The professionalism and intensity that they show in each session has had a marked improvement on my own game. On and off the field their set-up and training is first rate.”

The former Canberra Olympic playmaker, having had a taste of what is on offer, is understandably keen to get another shot. “I want to see how far I can go in the game,” Zygmunt responded when asked what his goals were.

“I would love another go at the Mariners and obviously would like an A-League contract! I realise though that it will take an enormous amount of hard work and dedication to get there, but I will try my best and see where it takes me.”

What has stood out in the practice sessions to date has been the venom that Zygmunt manages to impart into his shooting, off either foot, when afforded the chance. “Well I used to be a forward,” he said. “So I like to think that shooting is one of my strengths as well as being able to distribute the ball. As far as weaknesses go I need to work on my aerial ability. For a guy my size I should be winning more headers than I do!”

It’s evident that the concept of the Rockets appeals to the competitive nature of the players. Both Travis Dries and Marcin Zygmunt were enthusiastic supporters of the idea.

“It’s brilliant playing with the best players in Canberra,” Zygmunt mentioned. “It really means I have to step up my game and I thoroughly enjoy the technical side of the coaching we receive here. You don’t get many opportunities to play at this level, so I enjoy the intensity.” Dries concurred with his new team mate saying, “I get along well with all the lads here and it’s great to have the chance to play against an A-League team.”

Across the damp outfield coach Ugrinic was busy putting strike duo Goran Veljanovski and Paul Ivanic through their paces, hoping to build a rapid understanding that will terrorise the Mariners defence. It’s a partnership that Canberra FC striker Paul Ivanic is looking forward to.

“I think Goran and I will compliment each other well,” Ivanic said. “We are trying to work off each other and he has been banging in the goals this season.”

The tall forward is no slouch in front of the net either having ten ACT Premier League goals to his name already this term. “I am happy with the way I am playing but I always expect better from myself,” Ivanic continued. “Hopefully both Goran and I can get on the scoresheet next Friday and we can cause some problems. I like to break naturally from deep and take advantage of any space that is available so whether I get the chance to do that on Friday, we will wait and see!”

After growing up at Canberra Deakin (now Canberra FC) and playing all his local football there, Ivanic had spells at the Canberra Cosmos, Sydney United and the Belconnen Blue Devils so he knows what it’s like to be selected amongst the playing elite of the region.

“It’s good to be selected as it means the people that matter, the coaches, believe you to be the best in your position in the League,” he told us. “Playing with all these guys is great. They are a good group and everyone gets on well together.”

At twenty-five Paul is realistic about what the future holds for him as a footballer. “At this time of my life I need to look after my work commitments and that sort of thing.

However, if I do get a decent offer on paper then of course I would seriously consider it,” he smiled. With excellent strength and speed and poise in front of goal Ivanic looks to be the archetype of the modern centre-forward, so what aspects of his game does he feel he needs to work on?

“My concentration,” he replied. “Sometime during matches I drift in and out a little bit so I would like to be able to focus fully for the full ninety minutes.”

Judging by the way the majority of chances that Ivanic and Veljanovski were planting past Nathan Denham last night, given an iota of space the striking duo could help provide a massive sporting upset at Deakin Oval. Countdown to lift off continues……

ACT Rockets: YANES & DENHAM HOPE TO SHINE WHILE YOUTH GETS ITS CHANCE

Read Nearpost radio host Russ Gibbs update on ACT Rockets preparations for the Mariners.

YANES & DENHAM HOPE TO SHINE WHILE YOUTH GETS ITS CHANCE

by Russ Gibbs.

The ACT Rockets second training session took place at the Australian Institute of Sport Track and Field stadium on Wednesday 11th June in the shadow of Bruce Stadium on a damp, yet mild, evening.

With a fair smattering of rain throughout the previous two days the pitch was dewy and slippy but, as you would expect from a top-class facility, in superb condition.

Again the problems of getting the selected squad together reared its head with Steve Rezzo and Goran Veljanovski of the O’Connor Knights still unable to train due to slight strains picked up in the 0-1 loss to Tuggeranong United in the ACT Premier League on the previous weekend.

With Matt Valeri (Belconnen United), nine-goal striker Paul Ivanic and fellow Canberra FC players Adam Spaleta and John Ison also unavailable coaches Dean Ugrinic and Scott Conlon called on their standby players, striker Goran Josifovski (Queanbeyan City) and defender Lucas Roth (Canberra Olympic), to fill the breach, which they did with aplomb.

After the regular warm-up, needed to stretch away the kinks from a rigorous weekend of Premier League action, the squad, supplemented by Youth Rockets Zak Maybury, Jonathan Reis, Kole Aitken and Andrew Pilkington (a highly rated talent from Woden Valley) split into two groups of seven for a five on two circle designed to promote awareness, speed of thought and adjustment.

The wet conditions underfoot didn’t deter the Rockets lads from pinging passes at pace and changing direction with ease, despite one or two slips!

Following fifteen minutes of this the two groups were split into a defensive and offensive formation with one goal in order to learn how to break down a packed defence using overlapping runners and short, sharp, accurate passing.

Nineteen-year-old midfielder Victor Yanes, now with Canberra Olympic, shone in his central role and is convinced that the Rockets can scare their more illustrious opponents come game time.

“I think we will do well,” he said afterwards. “We have a good squad. The players are all very skilful and work hard for each other both on and off the ball which will count in out favour.”

Yanes, who was joint ACT Player of the Year in 2007 whilst with Woden Valley, moved to Australia from his native Brazil when he was eleven and has since represented Australia at schoolboy level and has ambitions to further his game.

“I hope to play well in the match against the Mariners and hopefully be given the opportunity to sign for their Youth League squad. But I will be taking things one day at a time and striving to improve my game. My strengths lie in my ability to hold the ball and in my distribution but I do need to work on my running!” he joked. When asked about his selection to the Rockets and what it meant to him he replied, “it’s just awesome. It’s a great opportunity to play with top quality players and to be involved in a squad such as this.”

These sentiments were echoed by 23-year-old Canberra FC shot-stopper Nathan Denham.

The former Rockets representative, who has also played State League for ACT and for the Australian futsal squad said, “It’s great to be picked into a squad that is regarded as the best of the best and it’s a big match that puts us all in the spotlight.

Everyone is keen and the young lads want to put themselves in the frame to step up. It’s a wonderful opportunity.” Denham has had previous experience of coach Ugrinic when he had a stint with O’Connor Knights. “He (Ugrinic) is a good coach,” Denham commented.

“He has good ideas and I rate him very highly along with Scott (Conlon) who has done a great job at Tuggeranong.” With Brett Dickens pushing hard for the number one jersey as well, Denham has had to be on the top of his game at training – no easy feat considering the attacking quality in front of him.

“Some of the shooting in training last week was sensational!” he enthused. “Marcin Zygmunt impressed me with the power of his finishing off both feet, and along with Paul (Ivanic), Adam (Spaleta), Travis (Dries) and the rest; it has been daunting at times!”

Denham has had experience of a higher level of football having been drafted in as cover for the Sutherland Sharks in the NSW Premier League this season. “Mike Katz (former ACT representative) put my name forward and I played four games up there,” he continued.

“The set-up was highly professional and the three training sessions a week certainly meant that you improved. It was an interesting experience and one that I definitely hope to repeat.” A good showing against the Mariners may be just the stepping stone he needs.

Meanwhile, at the other end of the field Rockets Youth (under-19) coach Alex Butt was putting his training squad through their paces ahead of the cull that would see the final sixteen man team to face ACTAS, in the curtain raiser to the ACT Rockets versus Central Coast Mariners match, picked.

The former Parramatta Power defender who currently plies his trade at the back for Canberra Olympic has a wealth of quality to select from.

“Most of the guys in the training squad are playing regular first grade football in the ACT Premier League,” he said. “This means that they generally know each other and get on very well. In that respect it has been good so far.” Butt, who has had previous coaching experience with ACTAS as well as assisting Tom Sermani and Robbie Hooker in an unofficial capacity with the Matildas, is impressed with the talent available to him. “They have all stood up, some obviously more than others,” he commented. “Philippe Bernarbo has been a real stand-out, mostly because he is the only one in the squad who is not a Premier League player. He plays the majority of his games at the under-18 level but has looked completely at home and comfortable here.”

The Youth Rockets face a similar dilemma to their senior counterparts with only four training sessions to fine-tune the team that will showcase the talent to Mariners head honchos Lawrie McKinna and Alex Tobin. “We aim to put on a display for the Mariners duo,” Butt continued.

“The ACTAS boys have the best talent in the ACT at under-16 and under-17 level and I have the best talent at under-18 and under-19 level. It promises to be a real contest and should be a superb advertisement for the type of player we breed in the ACT.”

With only a fortnight until kick off time is running out for the trio of Ugrinic, Conlon and Butt to get their teams in shape however the signs are promising.

Tuggers Queanbeyan, Olympic and Canberra FC win.

Canberra Times have a new Sports Editor. Paul Newman from the Central Coast. And he's a football fan so goes the word from the Coast. Good news! Welcome Paul.

And Tuggers down O'Connor Knights in ACT Men's Premier League. All the ACT Men's Premier Scores below. Thanks to Russ Gibbs for the inside word on the games.

AT A GLANCE
CANBERRA OLYMPIC 3 (S Barsley, S Vanzetti, T Flanigan) bt Woden Valley 0 at Woden. CANBERRA FC 2 (P Ivanic 2) bt CANBERRA CITY 0 Deakin Oval. QUEANBEYAN CITY 4 (M Naumoski, D Gjorgievski, G Josifovski, J Barac) bt ANU FC 1 (L Harbon) at Riverside Stadium. Tuggeranong 1 O'Connor Knights 0 (Andrew Bobinskas)

Tuggeranong 1 O'Connor Knights 0 (Andrew Bobinskas)
The Brett Holman of ACT Premier League Football, Andrew Bobinskas netted late in the game to stun O'Connor Knights.

Tuggeranong outplayed their more fancied opponents according to Nearpost football expert and Tuggers fan Russell Gibb.

Brent Chick played well in the middle of the park, Tuggers defence led by Jeremy Butler snuffed out ace scorer Goran Veljanovski.

Rockets representative keeper Brett Dickens made a number of saves including one stunning reflex saves to ensure the Knights were goal less on the day.

Interestingly when Dickens was asked at ACT Rockets training by Canberra FC keeper Nathan Denham, "Do you do shot training at Tuggers during the week," he replied without thinking, "Nah mate, I get all my shot practice on Saturdya afternoon!"

Nice one Brett! And nice win Tuggers.

Thanks to Russ Gibb for "the knowledge."

CANBERRA OLYMPIC 3 (S Barsley, S Vanzetti, T Flanigan) bt Woden Valley 0 at Woden.

Olympic Coach Ian Hayward was happy with the win, but is rueing his sides loss of players over the coming weeks.

Lucas Roth heads to the USA on a scholarship, Ruben Ares is out for the season with a knee problem, Steve Kounnas heads to Europe and Nick Keith has a season ending injury.

But his side had enough class to overcome a spirited Woden Valley side. Futsalroo keeper Angelo Konstantinou saved a penalty for Olympic and at the other end Scott Barsley, Steve Vanzetti and Trent Flanigan (pen) were knocking them in.

CANBERRA FC 2 (P Ivanic 2) bt CANBERRA CITY 0 Deakin Oval.

Did you know every club Paul Ivanic played for in the old National Soccer League quickly folded. No wonder no A-League club will touch him!

But he keeps knocking them in for Canberra FC. Another two for Ivanic takes FC to the top of the league.

Canberra City Coach Robbie Graham said, "we played well. We conceded goals in the second half."

Canberra FC continue to get the wins despite rumoured to be doing it easy at training these days.

It would be good to see the standard of fitness lifted across the league, particularly if young players want to move up another level. But Canberra FC and others need only train to a level required to win.

From all accounts they're not doing it to tough at Deakin Oval on training nights this season. But they keep on winning.

And next week they meet Belconnen United in the clash of the season on Saturday night.

Nearpost reporter Russ Gibbs predicts a Canberra FC, but when questioned further and realising the size of the town, he quickly added, "but it could easily be a draw or possibly even a Belco win." Fearless our Russ:)

QUEANBEYAN CITY 4 (M Naumoski, D Gjorgievski, G Josifovski, J Barac) bt ANU FC 1 (L Harbon) at Riverside Stadium.

Queanbeyan City clamed their first win, and now have gone three games undefeated.

And it could have been more. Coach Goran Neveski was very happy. He said, his side "had a good pre-season then had some internal problems and this showed on the pitch. But now we are playing well. And we need to beat teams like ANU if we are to climb the table."

Next week they are hoping for another win against Canberra City. Not sure Canberra City will be so keen to oblige.

ROCKETS TAKE FLIGHT.

ROCKETS TAKE FLIGHT..or should that be The Mariners!

Nearpost Reporter and radio host Russ Gibbs gives us the lowdown on the ACT Rockets preparations for their big game against the Central Coast Mariners in three weeks.

Russ will update us weekly on the Coach, the training, the players and of course how we will flog the Mariners.

Central Coast Mariners beware!

ROCKETS TAKE FLIGHT

By Russ Gibbs

Fox television will shortly begin their search for the next ‘football superstar’ with their new reality TV concept literally kicking off in mid-June as fifteen lucky hopefuls contest for the right to earn an A-League contract with Sydney FC.

Over the space of a few months the youngsters will be tested on their abilities with and without a ball to see whether they are made of the requisite stuff to become a professional.

Not a long time to impress potential suitors at all.

So what if you only had three weeks of preparation to take an essentially amateur group of players to face a match against the hardened professionals of the A-League? Sounds impossible?

Well that’s the task facing ACT Rockets coaches Dean Ugrinic and Scott Conlon over the coming month as they try to mould the ‘best of the best’ into a fluent, cohesive unit in just four training sessions.

“It’s a tough task, no doubt about it,” Ugrinic said as his players warmed down following the first hit-out at the AIS playing fields on a brisk and chilly Wednesday evening. “But we have a great group of players. They are young and enthusiastic and have some superb ability. They have certainly stepped up for this first session.”

The squad definitely looked the part in their opening training session, held on Wednesday 4th June, as they were put through their paces in a variety of drills aimed at forming a close-knit team dynamic within a limited timeframe.

With basic fitness a given at this level, Ugrinic and Conlon were able to focus more on the style of play they hope to impose on the Mariners. “We want to try and play football,” Ugrinic commented.

“That is why we have selected a team of footballers. We could go out and defend for ninety minutes and just smack the ball clear at every given opportunity, but that would not do justice to the group of players we have here. They are a talented group of individuals that we are hopeful of melding into a team to do the ACT proud.”

The session commenced with a vigorous, yet not-over strenuous, warm-up led by Tony Ryan, fitness trainer for O’Connor Knights and the Ainslie AFL teams. The 47-year-old is a touch football representative having twice been part of Australian sides that claimed World Cup glory at the sport.

He has recently been selected for the New South Wales State of Origin touch football team at Masters’ level and is well-versed in the need for a proper warm-up.

“Basically the drills we performed this evening were the same drills I would do for Ainslie or the Knights,” he said. “It’s important that the players loosen up and have their bodies prepared in the right way for physical activity.”

Ryan teamed up with Dean Ugrinic at the Knights five years ago and has since been an integral part of their build-up in training. “It’s hard to make matches, due to my commitments with Ainslie, but I do look out for the results and take a keen interest,” Ryan commented.

With the players sufficiently loosened it was time for the main focus of the evening to begin. Unfortunately, due to injuries or unavailability the O’Connor Knights quartet of Steve Rezzo, Goran Veljanovski, Justin Selkirk and David Brouwer missed the session, as did Trent Flanagan of Canberra Olympic.

To make up the numbers Ugrinic borrowed the talented Canberra City centre-back Zak Maybury, the precocious skills of Woden Valley’s Jono Rees and Knights’ up-and-coming goalkeeper Cody Larkin from the Rockets under-18 squad.

Each showed their mettle by standing tall alongside their more experienced colleagues and impressed the onlooking coaches.

After opening with some keep-ball in a five on two grid, which ensured plenty of fast, accurate and sharp two touch passing, the squad was split into two distinct groups, Ugrinic worked with his back-line focusing on keeping possession and working the ball out from the back, something that will need to be executed to perfection in order to keep the ball away from the sure to be marauding Mariners’ frontline.

“We need to keep the ball for as long as possible,” Ugrinic reiterated, “and then take it quickly in transition from defence to attack whilst not resorting to banging it downfield at the first available opportunity.”

Meanwhile, Conlon was busy creating striking drills for the attacking members of the squad. Working in a variety of complex reverse passes and with overlapping runners taking the ball at pace, crosses and lay-offs were neatly placed into the path of the onrushing attacker who had the shooting opportunity.

One felt for the goalkeeping trio of Nathan Denham (Canberra FC), Brett Dickens (Tuggeranong United) and Cody Larkin as shot after shot of venomous accuracy pierced the net from twenty yards range. Marcin Zygmunt (Woden Valley) in particular stuck some shots that flew like an exocet missile into the top corner of the net, with either foot.

It wasn’t all about goals though as the ‘keepers proved their quality repelling the onslaught with some outstanding blocks.

Having got the cobwebs out of the system the session concluded with a mini-game, played on half a field with the squad split into two teams of seven-a-side.

Incorporating the previous drills into a game scenario made the players think on their feet and added perception to the evening. The visual awareness of where their fellow runners were headed and the swift passing to feed them was phenomenal considering this was the first time this group had ever been assembled.

Ugrinic, who played football locally at premier League level for Belconnen United, Canberra Deakin (now Canberra FC) and the University of Canberra before heading into the world of coaching (it was Ugrinic who steered the O’Connor Knights back into the Premier League from State League Division One in 2001), was pleased with the first run.

“It went very well,” he said afterwards. “The players were receptive to the ideas we have put forward and we can only hope that we can gel in time. Obviously, it would be great to have longer with the players before the match, but we will have to make do.”

Goalkeepers: Brett Dickens (Tuggeranong United), Nathan Denham (Canberra FC)
Defenders: David Brouwer (O’Connor Knights), John Ison (Canberra FC), Matt Valeri (Belconnen United), Steve Rezzo (O’Connor Knights)

Midfielders: Trent Flanigan (Canberra Olympic), Pat Ross-McGee (Canberra City), Justin Selkirk (O’Connor Knights), Adam Spaleta (Canberra FC), Oliver Wiederkehr (Canberra Olympic), Victor Yanes (Canberra Olympic), Marcin Zygmunt (Woden Valley)

Mariners to play in Canberra

Central Coast Mariners will play two pre-season friendly games in Canberra in late June. One against Belconnen United and the ACT Rockets at Deakin Stadium.

Mariners set sail for Canberra in late June

After enjoying the sights and sounds of the nation’s capital for the first time last year, the Central Coast Mariners are set to return to Canberra for a pair of trial matches in late June as part of ongoing preparations for the clubs fourth Hyundai A-League campaign.

The reigning Hyundai A-League Premiers have been invited to the Australian Capital Territory by Capital Football, one of seven grassroots associations served by a partnership with the Mariners.

While in Canberra, the Mariners will playoff against powerhouse local club Belconnen United on Wednesday, 25 June and against the ACT Rockets – a representative squad made up of the best players plying their trade in the local ACT Premier League, on Friday, 27 June.

The Mariners will play the ACT Rockets at the newly refurbished Deakin Football Centre and will take on Belconnen United at the Belconnen Soccer Centre, which first hosted Lawrie McKinna’s charges almost one year prior to the upcoming fixture.

With the Mariners also confirmed for a sojourn to central Queensland some two weeks before the aforementioned matches in the ACT, the yellow and navy’s pre-season campaign is shaping up to be their most thorough yet.

"Since formalising an arrangement with Capital Football in November of last year, we have enjoyed an outstanding relationship with our partners in Canberra and our visit in late June will allow us to further develop our ties with Capital Football, footballers in Canberra and the ACT community at large," said Mariners Executive Chairman Lyall Gorman.

"We are extremely thankful to everyone at Capital Football and Belconnen United for making these fixtures a reality and I am certain that our playing squad will benefit from another trip away together ahead of the Hyundai A-League kick off.

"Furthermore, these matches provide the best players from the ACT Premier League with an ideal chance to test themselves against the Premiers of Australia, an opportunity that I’m sure will be relished by all wearing the shirts of Belconnen United or the ACT Rockets."

Canberra has traditionally been a happy hunting ground for the Mariners, who recorded back-to-back victories while in the nation’s capital prior to the Hyundai A-League 2007/08 season.

Nik Mrdja’s brace in addition to goals from Adam Kwasnik and Damien Brown saw the Mariners home 4-0 against Belconnen United in late June, before the team returned one month later to thrash Sydney FC 3-0 in the final Group B match of the 2007 Pre-Season Cup.

The yellow and navy’s current line up consists of several players with experience in Canberra, with Damien Brown, Andrew Clark and Nik Mrdja each having played for former National Soccer League club the Canberra Cosmos at various stages before linking with the Mariners.

The Mariners kick off their pre-season program against the Central Coast Lightning at Pluim Park tomorrow, Tuesday, 20 May. Kick off is at 7.30pm.
