Fozz has em up in ARMS!

Over at THE ROAR the natives are restless with Sir Fozzie for taking Aussies to task on the codes of football which are actually handball codes, and of course people are...well up in arms!

Here's what I Foz is actually saying:

Linking an Australian sport best suited to support the aspirations and growth of Australian economic nation is a question smart Aussies should consider. Why?

Because we should surely invest most money in codes that enable girls and boys to remain healthy for life, codes that best assist our nation's culturaland economic aspirations.

Fozz reckons football best represents Australia economic/cultural and sporting growth of all the codes. You might not like the man but the ideas are worthy of consideration and on many levels it's more economic, has better benefits for boys and girls and the future of the country to promote and encourage/ support football development rather than...

say AFL to China, or Rugby League across the globe or indeed these codes to girls.

Are the boys and girls of Australia really going to benefit from encouraging them to play League or AFL. Is it going to keep them fit for life is just one questions I might pose.

Maybe some people in Australia miss one major point of the book! But then hands up who's read it!

And Fozzies handball point remains and indeed is critical to get Australians to bring to their football, grassroots, supporting of their kids, support of national teams etc...call the games what you like if it keep your blood pressure down...but Foz is pointing out that the other three codes are played with their hands....or haven't you noticed. And there's a fair bit more to it than that point.

He uses the argument debate to further point out the difference between the three other footy codes and football. A crucial difference.

Without Aussies understanding this difference we bring our attitudes from the other codes, and let's face it more Aussies watch AFL and League more often than football so it's natural some attitudes from those codes flow into football. Foz argues they are useless attitudes when applied to football. As a small skilful player, I agree!

Get in to him, tackle him, crunch him, be a man (whatever that means) are great AFL/League attributes and make the game better....and a team succeed but try and apply that to the Brazilian or Dutch football team and this is where the Aussies need to aim to succeed in football.

Those "Aussie" attitudes can never assist Australian footballers succeed on the international stage, can they?

All Aussies can fight on the field, we've all had our weekly fill of AFL and League values flowing through our TV's, school yard and workplaces. These attitudes from the other codes and supporters cannot help Australia EVER succeed in footballl.

To the base of supporters who follow many codes these so-called Aussie attitudes have to be revisited if football is to progress. That I reckon is what Fozzie is really saying in my view.

And you can still call it football if you think it's football!

Etihad Stadium to miss World Cup bid

Apparently Etihad Stadium is to miss out on the 2018 World Cup Bid?

Why? Because enlightened CEO Ian Collins and his AFL mates realised after five years of trying they could never get a pitch up to football standard....ain't that the truth!

Storm Clouds in Melbourne

Bit of a yawn to see the papers full of "NRL" crises, again.
This time, shock oh horror, the Salary Cap has been breached, and not a News Ltd employee knew a dicky bird.

And what of every other code, AFL, A-League, Union etc I'm sure the only reason most clubs don't break the cap is because they don't have the money.

Really, reckon it's just a plot to keep Rugger's one big news story of the year off the back page. FTA TV, for Union, both Super 14 and the Wallabies and some more dosh and of course a heap of local Union games. Finally and doesn't it make sense.

Well done boys, but reckon the Socceroos are about twenty times bigger than the Wallabies, even if your daddy doesn't think so; so about time we saw the Green and Gold on FTA. If Union can do it and survive financially surely the FFA can sort a package out.

Meanwhile back in Storm land, the CEO of Storm has joined the Melbourne Rebels, the S15 Union side.......carry on everyone...

Sorry Mr Dimetriou it's a Melbourne Victory player, when it said Australian Football I thought of you!

Good luck with your recruitment in Co.Kerry and South Africa, mate!

He will get A$168,000 (about 4.5 million baht) per year or about 378,000 baht a month from his new contract.

Sydney FC stick it to Rebecca Wilson

Nearpost takes a huge delight in seeing one of the decreasing band of anti-football Australia sports journo being given a bit of her own.

Rebecca Wilson renowned for joining Peter FitzSimons, Patrick Smith, AFL Chief Andrew Dimitriou, John Bermingham, Paul Kent and too many others to mention for trashing Australian football or soccer as they like to say.

Well Edwin Lugt CEO Sydney FC made her look like the true professional she aspires to be.

Basically it went roughly like this:

Rebecca: Disappointing crowds for the A-League.
Edwin: Hello Rebecca I remember your article after Adelaide played in the Champions League Final...

At this point my shoulder chip bounced....hmmmn this "German" Aussie Sports Administrator knew exactly who she was and what she wrote even before, if my memory serves me right, he was in the country. I'm interested.

Edwin then fired a question:
Do you know how A-League crowds rank across the football leagues of the World?

Rebecca: Stumbled something like...."They are not as big as the English Premier League!"

Here was one of the small member of the anti-football brigade but apparently a PAID journalist for News Ltd getting her facts....so correct.

I was rolling.

So the A-League, salary cap $2.5mill, five years in the making, doesn't get as many people to games to a country where football is the national sport, has been for 100 years, has money to burn and about ten papers producing ten pages of football "news" every day. Nice one Rebecca.

For the record Australia is 17th for football crowds across the World. Pretty impressive after five years in my view...not Rebeccca.

And guess what Rebecca, we're behind Germany as well!
I can't do it justice, watch it here.
http://www.abc.net.au/sport/offsiders/content/2010/s2819059.htm

On behalf of the football community I'm sure we all salute Edwin Lugt. Professional, intelligent and driving one into the pathetic journo anti-football club.

We may not be the biggest code, who cares, but anyone who tries to keep us down, as Wilson and co do...deserve to be challenged.

Nice one Edwin, nice one son, nice one Edwin lets have another one.....who's next?

And Rebecca we know you'll use you media access to get back at Edwin or the game because that's the sort of "professional" journo you are....we're watching!

Andrew Demetriou: Are you an idiot?

In this mornings Herald Sun the Head of the AFL says,

An entire AFL season could be abandoned and some clubs would "cease to exist" if the MCG was unavailable for 16 weeks during a soccer World Cup in Australia

What a complete idiot!

At the end of the interview he thinks wiser heads will prevail and the AFL season wouldn't be cancelled.

Of course it wouldn't, and the AFL season will continue as normal with a small break. Big deal.

The World Cup comes but once, and the AFL is the biggest game in Australia now, and will be after the World Cup should we get it...and that's a big if.

Why are the AFL so scared, it's truly pathetic.

Most AFL fans support the World Cup, support other Aussie sports, but would not wish to see their code close for a season; and no-one is asking them to. The AFL even moved their season for the Olympics didn't they so what's the big deal with the football World Cup.

Demetriou must be an idiot, scaremonger and Head of AFL rolled into one.

After all why would the greatest game in the World, as we're always told, be scared of a little old boring round ball!

Canberra Professional Football smashes AFL?

AFL the darling of Australian sport, here for 150 years and with my beloved St Kilda leading the way have only

ONE player, one current professional player Sydney Swans Craig Bolton drafted from Canberra in their league.

One, according to the Canberra Times.

Can that be right?

Football has at least 13 guys playing professional football and at least a couple of women.

Joe Simunic, Bundseliga.
Carl Valeri, Serie B
Matt Kemp, A-League
Nikolai Topor-Stanley, A-League
Kaz Patafta A-League
Shaun Ontong, A-League
Adam Casey, A-League
Kofi Danning, A-League
Andrew Baresic, A-League
Stephen Lustica, A-League
Luke Pilkington, A-League
Sam Munro, A-League
Cody Larkin ?, A-League

Have I missed anyone?

Add in Lydia Williams currently on the Chicago WSL list, Caitlin Munoz, and a host of others in the Canberra United W-League side and we're smashing the AFL production ranks in this city.

Canberra: No room for AFL?

Canberra Times was full of stories about how much money we should give the AFL to come to Canberra.

And as Don Furner the Raiders Coach said Brumbies, Raiders, maybe 6 AFL games if Western Sydney get in and a A-League team, the city can't sustain 4 codes.

So the logical argument is AFL get stuffed!

Why because they can only take from an extended Brumbies and existing Raiders seasons, not to mention the corporate dollar.

Raiders and AFL go head to head in Canberra today and I'd be surprised if either code gets 10,000.

So do we want to see our two existing teams ditched? I think not.

Not that we don't want AFL, just that six AFL games, and more Union games will hurt all three codes.

Football well we play in summer although there will be some slight cross-over.

However Brumbies, Raiders and AFL all playing in Canbera at the same time. That ain't possible is it? Blind Freddy can see that and Rugby League fans could see the death of the Raiders.

Let's face it they're hardly packing them in now are they?

So ACT Government why don't you put your AFL funds into A-League/football and promote this business.

All the A-League needs is a great marketing spend, a great image and inclusivity program and of course a strong and viable team.

A successful Canberra football team has more potential for this city than 6 AFL games ever will.

Go the Raiders and The Brumbies, Canberra to the core.

And of course ACT Govt, when you promise to give an A-League team $800,000 per year how come the Brumbies get $1,000,000 plus $750,000 this year and the Raiders get $1.5 million per year.

Dare I suggest all codes get less and equal amounts?

Celtic: Best away supporters in Brisbane.

Well unique at least, and bring colour and atmosphere wherever they go.

31,000 turned up to see Celtic trounce the Brisbane Roar 3-0 today at Suncorp. And a Kiwi Chris Killen got two for the Celts.

And with Fulham and Wolves pulling in around 20,000 and 11,000 this weekend across the wide brown land clearly the Scottish Champions have slightly more fan power than the English Premier League clubs; no surprise there.

And I'm sure anyone at the game today from Brisbane would never have seen an away support like it. Not for Rugby League, Super 14, AFL or our wonderful A-League.

And remember this was just a wee friendly.

And for the record 31,000 was just short or the Roars record crowd which was 32,000 v Sydney FC a couple of years ago.

Money or your shirt?

These days, the A-League average (salary) is more than $100,000 — a marked increase in a few short years on the sort of wages that were offered (and often not paid by bankrupt clubs) in the old National Soccer League.

Michael Lynch writing in The Age looks at where the A-League can source their next players from. He points to Africa, Asia, including Thailand as a promising recruitment zone.

And while everyone tells you our wages can't compete with Japan, China, and of course Europe or even USA, remember Fred, maybe it's also time to recognise the A-League place in the Australian sporting market.

$100,000 salary average puts the players easily on a par with the National Rugby League and of course John Aloisi, Mile Sterjovski, Craig Moore, Robbie Fowler and many more would be on salaries far higher than most if not all NRL players running around at suburban clubs in Sydney.

And broadly, Union players would be comparable to the A-League due to Wallabies contracts, but only AFL at the top end paying a larger number of players in their squads more than $500,000.

So the message is clear for football in Australia; football is as lucrative a profession as any other football code after just 4 years, and of course only football, and to a lesser extent Union in Europe and maybe Japan, and League in UK, can offer an increased overseas wage.

Either way if it's about money, these days football is right in the mix, for Aussies playing in Australia.

And of course for the Union/League boys, a lucrative overseas contract at a young age means no Wallabies ticket. A dilemma football, it seems, has already solved.

More Aussie bullshit: This time in the SMH

Gotta to love the Aussie sports crowds singing in unison "bullshit." When I first heard it I laughed long and loud. It was so uniquely Australian.

And when I write my one-eyed football blog a few mates in time-honoured Aussie way say, "Eamonn, more bullshit," which is fair enough because it is!

But just because something is in the esteemed Sydney Morning Herald doesn't mean it isn't bullshit.

Rugby writer Spiros Zavos wrote this bullshit this morning talking about the British and Irish Lions Rugby team

On Saturday there were 20,000 of them, resplendent in red, the best supporters in world sport, packed into the ABSA Stadium in Durban to watch the absorbing first Test of the series against the Springboks.

Best supporters in World Sport. Fattest, oldest, richest and whitest, maybe, but best. Because you are rich enough to fly to South Africa and travel around for weeks this makes you the best does it?

You're dreaming Spiros and obviously desperate to talk up your code after the Wallabies dragged 20,000 to watch them on the weekend.

So who is the best fans in World Sport?

Well Celtic took 80,000 fans to Seville, no arrests and a heap of fun. Spiros how about that effort?

Many European football sides do travel in huge numbers and don't fight.
The Irish national team supporters have a great reputation as well. From the last World Cup the Argentineans, Croatians and many others travelled and partied in huge numbers.

I'm sure you have your own favourite...and I bet they aren't the British and Irish Lions Rugby team!

Australia's Number One Team.

Cricket, Socceroos, Wallabies and Kangaroos all vie for the title of Australia's number one national sports team.

The AFL team lacks a real international edge so fair to discount methinks.

For years many Wallabies fans tried to put the Union side up there, but with an Aussie Union World Cup a distant memory, and only 20,000 watching the Wallabies play in Melbourne on the weekend, the Union side has clearly slipped down the rank if indeed it was ever really above the Socceroos.

Only our lack of games perhaps reducing the Socceroos popularity.

Union doesn't have a national league, therefore limited coverage for kids. And former FFA Press Officers who were also Wallabies Press Officers said if you judge the popularity of a side by the media scrum, the Socceroos beat the Wallabies by some margin everytime.

The Kangaroos rarely fill a stadium, never mind rate a mention in Melbourne or other parts of the country and this is unlikely to change.

So that leaves the Socceroos and the cricket team.

The cricket team will get a huge boost from the Ashes tour, but aside from that the game has limited appeal across the World, and in terms of World Cup's, desperate qualification routes, the games lack an intensity...unless you love five days of inaction....and they say football is to slow!

Indeed the changing formats of cricket whilst set to strengthen Aussie clubs may hinder the national team as we have a Test, One-Day and Twenty Twenty team. Who plays for which team and when?

Long-term 20/20 may win out but it may also die much like the One Day series in years to come. Will cricket fans really take to the shorter form at a national level?

Which makes the Socceroos the number one code on a par with cricket.

The fickle nature of the Aussie sports fan will quickly turn against the cricket or football teams should they not succeed. And with more teams playing football it will always be hard to "succeed" in terms of winning trophies.

A tad easier to win The Ashes than the World Cup.

There maybe some debate about the number one national team status but when it comes to the football codes the Socceroos win the tag by in increasing margin.

Freee-To-Air TV anyone?

Daily Telegraph: Money talks

SBS Phil Micallef ran an interview with Daily Telegraph "newspaper" journo Phil Rothfield..one of the journo's keen to run strangely anti-football and anti-Socceroo stories in recent days.

http://www.theworldgame.com.au/australia/news-ltd-bias-what-bias-196111
Here's part of the interview, and the power of football advertisers as the Telegraph loses $60,000 in one day!

The Sydney Morning Herald throws a lot of space at rugby union because they get a lot of money from rugby advertising, we give rugby league plenty of space because we get a lot of money from rugby league advertising. If we get the same level of support during the World Cup we'll do the same with soccer

PM:But you cannot deny that the perception exists that News Ltd is anti-football. You guys have an image problem.

PR Telly:
"We probably do have a problem with our image among soccer fans. But how can we not highlight the unattractive brand of football the Socceroos are playing, for example."

So can we expect a decent coverage of the World Cup next year?

"Our coverage will be bigger and better than last time. Obviously the space we will throw at it will be determined by advertising support. Nobody supported the A-League when it started as we did. We had an eight-page liftout and had the full backing of the FFA.

The Sydney Morning Herald throws a lot of space at rugby union because they get a lot of money from rugby advertising, we give rugby league plenty of space because we get a lot of money from rugby league advertising. If we get the same level of support during the World Cup we'll do the same with soccer.

It's a magnificent event, probably equal to the Olympic Games. We'll do special editions and our website updating stories 24/7.''

And great to see in an industry that clearly prints in sport, exactly what he advertisers demand....The Telegraph lost $60,000 when Tim Cahill's sponsor Sanitarium refused to place a full page ad with the Sydney rag...instead opting for the SMH.

Fromt the Australian:

Sanitarium ran a series of full-page advertisements in the major metropolitan papers around Australia featuring Cahill with the slogan across the bottom "Course he had his Weet-Bix". The advertisements ran in News Limited papers in Melbourne and Queensland but not in NSW where the business went to Fairfax.

Football and the power of the stars is clearly starting to make waves. Let's play them at their own stupid game. Can't be that hard with all our mainstream sponsors these days.

As for Tim Cahill. Well me feels he's likely to come a cropper of his own making in the coming years. He's not the most articulate, he's not the World's greatest player and may well trip up on his own race for notoriety. Look after yourself Tim, they're out to get you....and I reckon they will.

Time to have a chat with Harry Kewell, or Mark Viduka. They seem to avoid the camera and the trips that come with it.

AFL, Union unite with Football.

Great to hear that the first person to ring Frank Lowy to congratulate him on Socceroos qualifying for the 2010 World Cup was fmr football boss and head of Australian Rugby Union...John O'Neill. We need more of this.

And even Andrew Dimitriou, (see quote below) AFL Supremo has come out and has said AFL supports the Aussie World Cup bid. Of course most AFL fans do, but sometime Andrew has said some pretty strange things in regard to football.

I'd love to see the Wallabies and Socceroos working more closely together as our true International codes and would love to see some huge AFL games in and around the World Cup to give our International friends a taste of the unique Aussie game.

Football is never going to lose out on this, but we have a lot to gain, and quick, if we can assist the other codes with their growth.

Rugby League..well not sure we have much to offer them, or they us...but we'll see.

AFL supports soccer World Cup bid
June 15, 2009 - 2:24PM .

The AFL has thrown its support behind Australia's bid to host either the 2018 or 2022 soccer World Cup despite the potential clash between the rival codes.

Soccer's biggest party coming to Australia would present its challenges for the AFL in terms of the use of stadia during winter, competing for fans, and vying for the next generation of footballers and followers.

But a spokesman for AFL chief executive Andrew Demetriou said the league was right behind Australia's bid.

"We're very supportive of it," he said.

Canberra: Socceroos beat Wallabies?

Neither code could sell-out Canberra Stadium for their respective international clashes in the Capital, although I'm giving the Socceroos a slight victory in the crowd analysis stakes.

22,000 for the Wallabies is a very healthy crowd, but with over ten years of professional rugby in Canberra, almost 10,000 Brumbies season ticket holders, a network of email addresses, and regular home S14 crowds of 13,000- 22,000, plus they were playing against a Six nations side in Italy, add in the Giteau and Canberra based stars element..a sell-out would have be expected.

Indeed what would it take to get a sell-out?

However the Socceroos, with not a Canberran in sight, a team spruiked with A-League players few in Canberra had heard of, playing against Kuwait ranked who knows where on the FIFA list, and little recent history of professional football in Canberra and no professional network to garner the season ticket holders etc....pulled in over 20,000.

Seems to me, importantly, both crowds are healthy for future International games in the Capital.

And if the full strength Socceroos ever came to town one would think the Socceroos would sell-out given the recent crowd.

A good result for both codes, but while neither administration would be discouraged the FFA are probably more encouraged of the two, as the game and opportunity continues to grow.

Socceroos: Biggest Sydney sports crowd this year

39,540 rocked up to celebrate Australia's qualification to the World Cup on the coldest Sydney night of the year.

Sydney's biggest winter sports crowd of the year once again turned out for football.

Wallabies drew 39,600 to their Baa Baa's clash even with SBW spruiking the interest, and of course this included the bigger playing squads.
Even the Waratahs failed to smash the 35,000 mark this season with just 33,000 watching their glamour clash against the Crusaders.

Rugby League's Centenary Test pulled in around 33,000 and wasn't that pumped.
And the AFL has seen Sydney Swans attract just 32,000 fans to their biggest game so far this year against West Coast.

And no NRL club side has come near the Socceroos mark nor will it in the normal season unless the moon and that cow does it's thing...even then I doubt they'd get 40,000

But of course the Sydney Telegraph and other media can spin it anyway you want..and so can I.

South African World Cup..got a ring to it...hasn't it.
