Singkok Primary School...could we do it in Canberra?

Simon Kravis, a signed-up Canberra A-League Foundation member, was so impressed by the Korean side Singkok at the recent Kanga Cup he sent through this reflection.

The best game I've seen

A junior football competition isn't the place you'd expect to find your most enjoyable game but this year the Kanga Cup Under 12 Boys turned up the most amazing football experience with the Singok Primary School team from Korea.

They redefined the levels of individual and team skills that might be expected from boys of this age in a series of stunning performances. Even people from teams they'd beaten earlier by double figure margins came to watch them play.

They were like a miniature professional team, floating exquisite crosses from tight marking, wrong-footing defenders and all with a huge level of enjoyment. Their coach hardly said a word during the games - they were so well trained that he didn't need to.

A former junior coach watching them commented that they were of at least Under 14 standard. Hats off to South Melbourne who only lost to them 2-0 in the semi-finals, in what their coach said was their hardest game in Australia. Look out for them next year!

Kanga Cup: 230 teams expected.

230 teams, 600 games all for football in Canberra. Must be worth some dough to the community.

The 2008 McDonalds Kanga Cup has received a record number of applications with 230 teams expected to converge on the nation’s capital in two weeks time for the week long junior football tournament.

In its 18th year, the international junior football tournament is the biggest of its kind in the southern hemisphere with 76 teams from NSW, 5 from Queensland, 4 from South Australia and 1 from Western Australia.

“It’s certainly a thrill to see the number of teams that have entered this year, from not only across Australia but around the world” McDonalds Kanga Cup coordinator Sarah Body said.

“For the first time in ages we’re welcoming back teams from the United States of America and Western Australia.”

The week long tournament will see over 600 matches be played out over ten venues with finals at Greenway Enclosed, McKellar and Deakin Stadium on Thursday and Friday.

According to Body, along with a record number of teams, this year’s McDonald’s Kanga Cup will see some differences.

“It’s with excitement that we’re introducing an under 10’s division to this year’s tournament for the first time which will be great for those young ones to play against some opposition they’ve never encountered.”

Local, interstate and international teams may be competing for the prestigious silverware the tournament’s sole focus isn’t on results rather ‘uniting the youth of the world through football’ with a number of cultural and social activities organised for the week.

“The ever popular Host Night makes a return on Monday along with the Moove to the Groove Disco on Tuesday followed by the Greater Union Movie Night on Wednesday,” Body said.

“All the activities provide the perfect opportunities for all participants to interact and build friendships in a non-competitive environment.”

Along with a record number of teams, 130 referees from interstate and the ACT will officiate the tournament, a record of its own.

“Referees are an integral part of the tournament with the McDonalds Kanga Cup playing an important role in the development of not only players but referees as well,” referee coordinator Daniel Murphy said.

The Kanga Cup kicks off on the 6th July with the Opening Ceremony at the AIS and concludes on Friday with finals and an award presentation.

Kath Temple Football hero.

Weston Creek's Cath Temple and Nearpost Host Russ Gibbs in the temporary 2XX Studio.

As football registrations continue to boom across Canberra, our local clubs rely on an increasing number of unsung heroes to provide children with the opportunity to play.
Kath Temple, from Woden Valley, has a passion for children, for their development and thankfully for the sporting community of Canberra, for fooball.

Kath has played football for fourteen years. She is now a Kanga Cup Co-Cordinator, as well as the Woden Valley Kanga Cup Co-ordinator. Kath is Wodens’ Junior Rooball Co-ordinator, she also coaches her sons Under 12 side. She has worked extensively in her professional capacity as Childcare Director and School Age care director at the YMCA, and brings many of her professional skills and observations to her various football volunteer roles.

Kath joined us at the Nearpost this week.

“I think if you have a passion for something you really find time. This is important to me. I played for 14 years, I have a son who plays in the Under 12’s,” opened Kath.

“I coach because my son nagged me for 3 years. I fell in love with it, it’s a great side of the game, and I revel in the opportunity to be around as many kids as possible.

“I was a Director of Childcare for 18 years. My professional background is Childcare, and School Age care and holiday programmes with the YMCA. I love it.
Playing Career

“I played for 14 years with University of Canberra. In my time there I had an exceptional coach in Paul Fitzpatrick. Fitzy taught me almost everything I know.

“I have 3 brothers who are Rugby League freaks really. My younger brother had to play soccer until he was older. I tagged along with him at Katoomba United in the Blue Mountains. But I got roped in to play and I loved it from then on.

“When I started at the University of Canberra we had one team. We were never taken seriously right through until one year we had a team in every Grand Final.
Rooball insights

Kath is now the Rooball coach at Woden Valley. Small Sided Games (SSG’s)are now being pushed hard across Australia by the Football Federation.

Kath says, ”The SSG’s have been in for a couple of years now, so bit by bit we are getting used to them. This is all about communication and re-education of parents who may have played the game, or parents who never did play these rules. It’s not going too badly.

“It’s not quite standardised yet across the ACT, but everyone’s doing their best. Not all clubs are cashed up. Some have new size goals for the Under 11’s and 12’s and some don’t. Everyone is doing their level best to get the kids on a field of any size.

“The younger children (3-8’s) all they want to do is be with their mates and kick a ball and run around. Children at that age, developmentally just play and play and keep going. With less kids on the field and more time to touch a ball and experience actually kicking a ball around there are a lot of positive attitudes coming out and the kids are happy.

“My son coaches an Under 8 team. The refs are great. They actually help the kids.
“The SSG’s gives the kids a better opportunity to be involved,” says Kath.

Some concerns have been raised about the lack of goalkeepers.

“A lot of kids do not have the gross motor skills to goal keep a ball. If you put kids in too early they will get scared and walk away from the game.

“We’ll see how it goes but I’m all for the SSG’s.”

Kanga Cup

Kath has been busy organising for this years Kanga Cup. There are a record 229 teams entered. Smashing last years previous high of 175.

“We’ve got 9 teams in, five boys and four girls. It’s just fantastic. One of our teams, the Under 13 girls won the plate last year, so they’re back.

“I think this tournament is everything it should be, the whole spirit of football, even getting together with the teams on Monday night for dinner,it’s great!”

Kanga Cup: Adem Poric to Coach.

In Kanga Cup news:
Former Sheffield Wednesday and Olyroo player Adem Poric will bring a side from Queensland to play at this years Kanga Cup.

A record 220 teams will play smashing Capital Football expectations.

An SBS Advertising campaign, and increased promotion has lead to the increase in teams.
Teams from Korea (2), Malaysia, New Zealand and India(2) will come to Canberra for the July tournament.

The new Woden Valley Clubhouse will provide the hub for the competition.

And in a Kanga Cup first the Under 10 category have 25 teams entered in the 9 v 9 small sided games version.

And it's hoped the Central Coast Mariners will play Newcastle Jets in a friendly at Canberra Stadium on Saturday July 12. (TBC)

Malaysians coming to Kanga Cup

Malaysian outfit named 2008 Asian Fellowship winner Capital Football release below:

Australia’s biggest and oldest international youth football tournament has started finalising preparations. Host’s Capital Football, are proud to announce that the annual recipient of the McDonald’s Kanga Cup Asian Fellowship is a boy’s under 13 teams from the Subang Jaya Community Sports Club of Malaysia.

The aim of the Fellowship is to engage and encourage participation of Asian youth football teams in the annual McDonald’s Kanga Cup held in Australia’s capital, Canberra. Nominations were open to Under 13-15 teams of both genders and information was disseminated through Asian National Associations and football media outlets under the sanction of the Asian Football Confederation. Other candidates for the Fellowship were teams from South Korea and Afghanistan.

Selections were made not just on the footballing pedigree of the teams but on how best they encapsulate the ethos of the McDonald’s Kanga Cup – to unite the youth of the world through football. The application from Subang Jaya Community Sports Club asserted that they are a volunteer driven club with a focus on the future of their community, in that they intentionally integrate their teams to reflect the racial and religious diversity of Malaysia.

The club runs a football league annually beginning of the year until end of May. On completion of the season a panel of coaches select the best player from each team in their division to be trained and to play for the club.

The McDonald’s Kanga Cup turns 18 years of age this year kicking off from July 7-11, 2008.

Kanga Cup glory for the Lightning Girls

Belnorth Lightning Girls U14/2 Kanga Cup Journey

Coach John Williams sent in this report on how Belnorth Lightning girls took out the Cup.

The girls started the week without having trained together due to bad weather, so this was going to be a bit of a learning curve for all of us.

The first four games showed plenty of promise with the girls not winning but holding their own.

When it came to the quarter final against NSW Dolphins who we lost to 2-1 the previous day, I knew we could win with a few positional changes. The end result was a hard fought 1-0 victory.

In the afternoon we played a semi final against Brindabella, the girls went out hard and should have been 2-0 up in the first 15 minutes but we could not find the back of the net. Brindabella scored a break away goal 20 minutes in and held out until half time.

The second half was going the same as the first with Belnorth attacking but not able to find the equalizer, then Brindabella scored again against the run of play 2-0 down.

With just over 20 minutes remaining we won a penalty, but the Brindabella goal keeper saved it. To the girls credit and never say die attitude they threw everything at Brindabella.

We won a free kick 25 yards out and Jade fired it into the top left hand corner 2-1 game on. With 12 minutes left Liana scored the equalizer from 8 yards out and now the girls new they could win.

Final minute Madeline (Mady) ran down the right hand side of the box with the ball and with some of the girls yelling shoot she fired home the winner.

The final was against Braidwood who we had lost to 1-0 in our second game, so we new we could match them.

The game started with Braidwood doing most of the attacking and the girls trying to hit them on the break. This was not working and the girls were under a lot of pressure.

I made 4 positional changes and that seemed to work better as the girls where able to push out more. The first half was end to end with both teams having chances but at half time it was 0-0.

In the second half both teams looked more determined and came out harder but neither could break the deadlock. With 23 three minutes remaining Liana made one of her mazy runs with the ball and as she had done in the semi final she scored from 12 yards out.

We knew Braidwood had to attack even harder now and that we had a chance of hitting them on the break. The girls all rallied in defence as Braidwood came at us.

With injuries to Jade, Dani and Elise (our keeper) the girls did a remarkable job to keep Braidwood out. As time was running out we had a few half chances to seal the victory but Braidwood did most of the attacking but in the end the girls won in what has to be one of the best turnarounds ever.

Well done Dani and Stacey three straight plate wins, to Milly, Anne-Marie, Josephine, Shanly and Elise back to back wins.

To the girls for the first time Liana, Ali, Chloe, jade, Rosa, Mady and Frances.

Thankyou to Dave assistant coach/manager and Shane for assisting in finding girls from the under 13. Truly a great team effort well done

My Kanga Cup favourites lost!

The Belsouth Panthers have defeated the Belnorth Little Devils in their opening match of the 2007 Kanga Cup.

The Under 12 girls teams played out an exciting game showing off some great skills in the freezing conditions.

Belsouth ran into a howling wind in the first half but managed to grab the lead thanks to a good finish from Jamie Thompson.

Thompson’s first shot forced a good save, but she calmly slotted the rebound home to give the Panthers a well deserved half time lead.

Belsouth dominated field position in the second half as Belnorth struggled against the strong wind, and a second half goal from Belsouth’s Georgia Sheldrick wrapped it up for the Panthers.

Belsouth coach Peter Fogarty was really pleased with the performance of his girls but though playing on the full field tired his team out towards the end of the game.

“We were great, really good,” Fogarty said after the game. “The legs got a bit tired towards the end there, but the girls really enjoyed playing on a full field, because we normally play on a smaller field with just nine players, so they’re relishing the chance to play on a full field. They really lifted and played good football.”

Belnorth coach Jeff Smith was also proud of the way his team performed despite the score line.
“They had their chances, although they’re only 11 year old girls playing against 12 year olds, so that was a bit of a challenge,” Smith said. “They tried hard and actually did some good work running the ball forward and passing it around.”

One of those players who didn’t stop running and made some excellent charges through midfield was Belnorth’s Nicky Jelocha.

Jelocha looks like she may be one to watch in the future and Smith agrees. “Yeah Nicky is a pretty talented girl.”

Kanga Cup: Indians make a big impact.

Kick off arrives for Indians

It was finally time for the inaugural Asian Fellowship recipients to kick off their McDonald’s Kanga Cup campaign, our boys from India taking on Canberra’s Woden Valley Redbacks.

A guard of honor was formed by Terrigal United for Gujarat as they ran out onto the pitch for the first time before receiving gifts from their opponents prior to kick off.

Providence Gujarat didn’t get their Kanga Cup campaign off to the dream start they were hoping for when they conceded a free kick just outside the box which led to the first goal within minutes of the match beginning.

Woden Valley founded the net for the second time against the flow of play but after a number of attempts from Gujarat, they finally had reason to celebrate and they did exactly that.

The chilly conditions obviously not suiting the visitors as a number of the Indian team members required their ski gloves and beanies for the duration of the match to keep warm.

Only minutes into the second half Providence Gujarat leveled the scores at 3-all, only to again fall behind 4-3 after an indirect free kick from only six meters from the goal line.

The fight and determination from the Indians had brought them back into the game on two occasions but couldn’t manage to level the scores again despite a number of opportunities before the final whistle.

Kanga Cup in Thailand!

Bumped into long-time Canberra football Referee and Administrator Chris Conti outside Rajamangala Stadium last night.

With thousands pouring into the night in the crazy Bangkok traffic, we started talking about the Thailand Iraqi match we'd just seen.

Well, you always bump into people from your home town in a crowded flooded Bangkok street!

"The noise inside the stadium was unbelievable," I said.

"Yeah, we were sitting next to a small group of Iraqi's." Chris replied. "I had my Kanga Cup t-shirt on."

"Anyway an Iraqi turns to me, hey I played in the Kanga cup in Canberra."

"I don't remember any Iraqi side playing. What year was it, " no tricking former Teacher Chris.

Quick as a flash the Iraqi says, "2000, we played for Blacktown, we're from Sydney!"

Nice one Chris, and The Kanga Cup is on all this week in Canberra.

Football Fever hits Canberra

Football Fever in the city that never sleeps.

A severe case of football fever is set to grip Canberra again when the 17th McDonald’s Kanga Cup will coincide with the Socceroos first appearance in the Asian Cup. Similar to last year’s Kanga and FIFA World Cups, this year around 3000 junior footballers from around Australia and Oceania will again be celebrating the green and gold from no better place than Australia’s capital.

Two of the three Socceroos games will take place during the week long tournament with Australia’s first match against Oman to kick off only hours after the KC Opening Ceremony, this year’s participants will surely feel inspired as the their own first round of matches are to take place the following morning at various venues around Canberra.

This year the Green and Gold Army will be setting up shop at the City Labor Club to cheer on our boys as we contest our first Asian Cup.

The football action doesn’t stop there with Canberra to host another Hyundai A-League Pre-Season Cup match a fortnight after the Kanga Cup concludes between Sydney FC and the Central Coast Mariners.

McDonald’s Kanga Cup organiser Steven McIntyre is looking forward to the occasion.
“What a place for a football fan, from Belsouth to Bentleigh Greens, from Queanbeyan to Queensland, all these kids will be competing against each other during the day, but come night fall we will all be celebrating as one for the Socceroos.”

Kanga Cup: Belnorth Little Devils rock!

Have you got a team to support for the Kanga Cup?

Belnorth Little Devil Stars: Holly Murney and Alex Paterson.

It's Kanga Cup time. The tournament runs in Canberra from 8 July until 13 July.

But who you are going to suport?

Haven't chosen a team yet?

Well, that sounds almost....well un-Australian.

I'll be reporting on the Socceroos in the Asia Cup for the Canberra Times, so I won't be around for the Kanga Cup, but I've chosen my team.

It's BELNORTH LITTLE DEVILS.

I met two star players today and they bowled me over with their enthusiasm, and charm.

Holly Murney is 11. She just loves playing soccer.

"It's really fun, I get to make new friends. I just love having fun."

Have you ever scored a goal Holly?

Cynthia, her mum, jumps in. "Heaps."

"And I love being goalie." adds Holly.

Alex Paterson is also a Little Devil.

Somehow I think the name suits this team.

"I love running around and kicking the ball. This is my fourth year playing soccer. I scored a goal in my first year. It felt really good."

So that's my team for the Kanga Cup.

I won't be there to cover the games. I'll be talking to Lucas Neill and co. Well someone has to do it.

But, Holly, Alex and your mates from the Belnorth Little Devils, if you send me an email after every game, I'll get your story out to the world on this site. Any details, goals etc, whatever you like.

Don't worry about the spelling or stuff like that. Football stars like you guys need to concentrate on playing during a tournament.

Go the Little Devils, let's see how many goals we score.

Kanga Cup news

Volunteers Needed

Capital Football is in need of volunteers for this year’s McDonald’s Kanga Cup in the second week of July. Last year, 26 volunteers took part in making the tournament possible.

This year only 16 volunteers have registered therefore we need at least another ten helpers in the following areas:
· Ground Management
· Opening Ceremony/Social Functions
· Retail

It’s a wonderful opportunity for volunteers to participate in the largest junior football tournament in the southern hemisphere and one of Canberra’s largest events. Apart from benefits such as the provision of a uniform, lunch and the opportunity to meet lots of new people - the Kanga Cup is a lot of fun and you become an ambassador for Canberra itself.

Botswana ref fly's in for Kanga Cup

Fifa's only female Botswana ref is flying to referee in the Kanga Cup to be held in July in Canberra this year.

With an Indian team, Singok from South Korea making their second trip, and two teams from New Zealand the International flavour of the competition flourishing.

Singok will be hosted by the Monaro Club in Queanbeyan.

Capital Football CEO Heather Reid said, " Singok were delightful when they came two year's ago. The boys go to a football school in Korea. They respect their coach's are very disciplined. They will play an age up because of their ability."

Kanga Cup expanding into Asia

The biggest junior football competittion in the Southern Hemisphere is gearing up for another big year.

As Australia has moved into the Asia Football Confederation Capital Football have offered an Kanga Cup fellowship to any club in the AFC.

Capital Football is pleased to offer the inaugural McDonald's Kanga Cup Asian Fellowship to the B15 Providence Gujarat FC team from India. The MKCAF application form was sent to every single Asian Football Association in Asia. We also received applications from Kyrgyzstan, China and South Korea.

Apart from our three New Zealand teams and Providence Gujarat FC, Singok FC will return to be part of the B12 competitions, along with another South Korean team and possibly a B12 team from Singapore. It is hoped that a Beijing B18 team will also be coming.
