Tim Cahill - giving back to Aussie grassroots.....really?

Tim, let's call a spade a spade mate!

Seems having seen this stuff promoted across Australia on every media set going I'd thought I'd ask the question.

Is this Tim Cahill program really giving back to grassroots football?

Now we all know Tim is a great bloke, has great compassion for Australia causes and has been a great role model for many both on the sporting and family field, and far be it for me to criticise Tim, but does anyone else feel the, "I really want to give back to the grassroots" line is a great big Scouse mickey-take.

Each kid gets 2 or 3 days of football at the Tim Cahill clinics for $200 per kid.

Yes, $200 per kid and in January not a Tim - I'm too busy giving back to grassroots - Cahill in sight.

If 100 kids (could it be 200 in Sydney?) particpate makes a cool $20,000 per clinic and with VOLUNTEER coaches advertised on the website - what costs for Timmaaaayyy!

Across the country 4 kids (boys?) will be plucked to travel all expenses paid to Everton although it's not easily sighted on the website.

Though I guess these will be the best kids - interesting motivation one suspects.

And those that miss out will....miss out.

Tim won't be there at the Clinics, he'll be playing for Everton - but should we really expect to pay $200 for 3 days to see Tim - or not see Tim?

The most expensive football clinics to come to Canberra?

Sure what kid wouldn't be up for a trip to Everton. Nice one. But doesn't sound like Tim is giving much back to me - in fact $200 for a 2 or 3 days of football when packaged in "I'm giving back to Australian kids" leaves me a little empty.

Come on Tim, it's a business decision and fair play to you.
You might have sucked Ray Gatt and the rest of the Aussie media in but not me.

I expect the cost of a trip to cost ....well maybe a flight if your club or Emirates and co don't pay...so one kid $2,000 maximum costs each maybe...and of course at a minimum of $20,000 per clinic......

We see a lot of clinics come to town, few as expensive as Tim's - and yet he's giving back?

For $150 the kids team I'm involved with get 16 games in-season, two trainings per week, plus two football one day/one week carnivals, plus 8 weeks x 2 sessions pre-season - plus 8 sessions over 8 Summer weeks - and absolutely no chance of visiting Everton!

Talk about someone giving back to grassroots - oh and the money doesn't go to me it goes to my local football organisation/club.

Funny I know a million men and women like me.

Who is giving back?

Great website, great player, but really doing all this for Aussie kids - the numbers don't add up do they?

We can't drop Timmy Cahill - can we?

We'll need a squad to see us through to Brazil, a big squad. So no problems for all you Tim Cahill fans, he'll be there to the end.

But is Tim a certain starter in the Australian football team?

Not in my book - not anymore. Now before I get smashed by all you Timmaay fans let's take a look at my reasoning.

Josh Kennedy and Tim Cahill are not the greatest pairing in International football are they? The Thai game showed this - the two stars going for the same ball and while Cahill is great in the air it's his work outside that box that lacks the Aussie style.

Top notch skill and great passing. That's where we're heading. In Brett Holman we have something Timmy doesn't give us. Ditto Matt MacKay. And who could leave Carl Valeri or powerhouse Brett Emerton on the side as a like for like swap for Timmy?

Not me, not Holger.

Big Josh is leading the score charts in Japan and he's just got 3 in 2 for Australia and played a massive part in the other two.

And when Harry Kewell is back - who would you rather supporting the Big Josh?

Cahill is fine for Everton and a certain starter for the Socceroos when Big Josh isn't around, but even Timmy would admit he's not an out and out striker - but with Big Josh around we don't need two players who like to attack the headers, do we?

We need players who give and go with accuracy. Dart and move between the lines. Timmy can do this, but I'd argue the pace of Holman gives him the edge. The engine of McKay and Emerton secures the flanks.

Timmy will never take a holding role so where does that leave the star man?

His position in doubt?

Certainly for away games.

At home, against weaker opposition would you drop Kennedy to play Timmy? Or would you like to see them both play together again?

You might, but Holger won't.

We're more nimble, more skilled under Holger. That's when we are at our best.

Robbie Kruse is pushing for a place - he's another, fast, darting with heaps of skill. Harry over Timmy for me, especially with fast players all around.

Cahill will continue to play for Australia - many many times, but when Josh is around I just wonder if the new style of Holger will see the self-appointed Roo spokesboy left aside more often.

And he's 31 now. Not quite so fluent in the final third - other than arriving late around the goal. A great sub?

Sssssh, don't mention it to anyone just yet.

EPL to Sydney...David Moyes says..

You can just hear it can't you. Everton v Blackburn in Sydney on a Saturday in January.

"There's is no way Tim Cahill is going all that way for a game of football, against sodding Blackburn. He's got a bad hammy, besides there is an International in London the following Wednesday and he really wants to play for Australia in that," spoken by a man impersonating David Moyes.

Canberra's Carl Valeri in Socceroo squad

Canberran Carl Valeri is included in the Socceroo squad to play Uruguay on June 2nd. This is the last game before the squad for the Asia Cup is announced.

Mark Viduka, Harry Kewell, Tim Cahill and Vince Grella are just some of the notable absentees. All should be available for the Asian Cup.

I would expect Valeri to gain his second cap, and Valeri will almost certainly gain a place in the Asia Cup squad following his strong debut in the last friendly against China. He is seen as understudy to defensive midfielder Vince Grella.

Grella's other replacements are Josip Skoko(left outof this squad) and possibly Mark Milligan (Olyroo).

Full squad is:
Daniel Allsopp (Melbourne Victory)
Michael Beauchamp (Nurnberg)
Mark Bridge (Newcastle Jets)
Nick Carle (Newcastle Jets)
David Carney (Sydney FC)
Simon Colosimo (Sivasspor)
Jason Culina (PSV)
Brett Emerton (Blackburn)
Adam Federici (Reading)
Ryan Griffiths (Liaoning)
Brett Holman (NEC Nijmegen)
Brad Jones (Middlesbrough)
Patrick Kisnorbo (Leicester)
Scott McDonald (Motherwell)
Lucas Neill (West Ham)
Jade North (Newcastle Jets)
Matthew Spiranovic (Nurnberg)
Shane Stefanutto (Lillestrom)
Mile Sterjovski (Basel)
Archie Thompson (Melbourne Victory)
Michael Thwaite (Wisla Krakow)
Carl Valeri (Grosseto)

Harry's back but no Cahill

In games overseas last night, Socceroo Harry Kewell came off the bench for the last thirteen minutes of Liverpool's game against Fulham. Liverpool lost 1-0.

No sign of Tim Cahill yet. With only two English Premier League games to go Cahill is still out with injury.

So Harry, here we go again. Three years and three returns to football after long injuries just before the glamour games start.

Kewell has started a previous Champions League final, FA Cup final only to walk out injured early in each game.

Here's hoping Kewell gets through to the AFC 2007 Asian Cup, and perhaps more importantly for him is fit to start with Liverpool, Man City, Bolton or anyone else he is rumoured to be going to.

Only hope he doesn't suffer an injury during the AFC 2007 Asian Cup or the Liverpool fans' will lose whatever faith they have left in him.
