Canberran lights up A-League

Great to see former Belconnen junior Adam Casey playing for Sydney FC last night...

And didn't he shine particularly in the first half. Adam is back from a long-term injury but has pace to burn.

It's a fantastic asset and he caused Melbourne Victory a heap of problems last night in Sydney's season opener.

Any player with that amount of pace is going to cause problems. Casey had an extended run last season under Branko Culina, scored a goal and was really starting to make an impact.

Well a severe injury halted his progress, and he's back and in the starting line-up under Coach John Kosmina.

Good to see, and will be interesting to see how Adam progresses under Kosmina.

Casey could be in line for a great season. I'll keep you posted. And isn't it great to see an Aussie with genuine pace?

Canberra stars in the news.

Socceroo Carl Valeri on the move? Ned Zelic on SBS catch his video here during the week. Nikolai Topor-Stanley plays centre-back for Olyroos! Kaz Patafta, Shaun Ontong, Caitlin Munoz, Amy Taylor and Adam Casey replaced by Irish popstar!

Carl Valeri's contract is up in twelve months. How many more times will he have played for the Socceroos by then?

And then he's a free agent. So don't be surprised to see Carl move on from his Serie B side, Grosseto in the next few weeks. But where to?

Serie A, or a top Serie B club I reckon but you never know. Holland could be the go, although with an Italian agent I expect him to stay in Italy.

Nikolai Topor-Stanley played a rare game at centre-back for the Olyroos last night. They drew with Chile 1-1 in Darwin. FFA Release at the very end of this post.

Former Canberra Croatia now Canberra FC Ned Zelic was interviewed on SBS today and you can see Ned in his tourist cart with Scott McIntyre giving his thoughts on playing football in Georgia. Yes Ned is still playing!

Kaz Patafta and Shaun Ontong. Both Canberra lads are now at Newcastle Jets.

Kaz played in the recent 1-0 defeat of the Mariners whilst Shaun is out for three months with a foot injury. Cruel world football. We wish Shaun, who was a recent guest on Nearpost radio a speedy recovery.

Better news for Adam Casey. The Sydney FC forward/winger come right back is back playing after breaking his leg early last season. He played in the recent 0-0 game against Blacktown before being replaced by Deltra's boyfriend Irish popstar Brian McFadden. Good to see Adam back.

Talking recently from Sydney FC, Adam said, "When I look at the talent around the dressing room, there's some great players, but I'm determined to work hard and earn my place."

Caitlin Munoz joins fellow Canberrans Amy Chapman and Lydia Williams as the Matildas head to China with a very young side.

And a former Matilda, Amy Taylor, loved her time in Canberra, playing for Tuggeranong United, Canberra City ACTAS under Katrina Neuss before being a Matildas for 8 years. Wally Hovell and Neuss were just two of the locals Amy mentioned in an interview for the Nearpost which you can hear in coming weeks.

For now she's WIN TV Sports Presenter and host of Football Superstar which airs on Thursday on Fox 8 at 7:35pm. Amy talks about the show on Tuesday on Nearpost radio.

Olyroos v Chile.

Qantas Under 23s Draw with Chile

The Qantas Under 23s played out an entertaining 1-all draw against the Chile Under 23s tonight in front of 1,780 fans at the Darwin Football Stadium. Kristian Sarkies opened the scoring for the Qantas Under 23s from the penalty spot in the 27th minute and Felipe Seymour equalised for the Chileans in the 67th minute with a clinical finish from inside the box.

Qantas Under 23s Head Coach Graham Arnold made 10 changes to the line-up for tonight's match with Mark Milligan the only player to start both games.

The match began at the same frenetic pace that was seen on Friday evening with the Chilean having the first attempt on goal in the 3rd minute, but five minutes later Kristian Sarkies had the Qantas Under 23s first shot which was expertly tipped over the bar by Gregory Saavedra in the Chilean goal.

The Qantas Under 23s continued to apply the pressure with Nikita Rukavytsya netting in the 21st minute but the goal was disallowed for off-side. But the Qantas Under 23s were on the scoreboard in the 27th minute when Kristian Sarkies calmly slotted home a penalty after David Williams had his shirt pulled in the box in a goal scoring opportunity.

Nikita Rukavytsya nearly doubled the lead in the 41st minute when his deft control in the box allowed him to unleash a stinging shot to the near post, but again Saavedra was on hand to make another crucial save.

After the half-time break, the Qantas Under 23s continued to push forward and had the bulk of possession and scoring opportunities. Had it not been for the goalkeeping heroics of Gregory Saavedra, who made a number of saves and interceptions, the Qantas Under 23s could have extended their lead on a number of occasions.

Just after the hour mark, Neil Kilkenny put Michael Zullo through but Saavedra was quick off his line and cleared the ball from Zullo's feet outside the area..

Chile's patience paid off midway through the second half when Felipe Seymour finished off a one-on-one opportunity against the Qantas Under 23s goalkeeper, Chris O'Connor, shooting low and hard to the bottom left corner of the goal.

After the match Graham Arnold was again pleased by with the performance of his players.

"Our players again performed well up against very good opposition tonight," said Arnold

"The purpose of this camp was for me to make critical selection decisions and also to prepare the players for the Beijing Olympic Games,"

"Based on that, this camp has been extremely successful, we have been very well looked after by everyone here in Darwin and the effort of all the boys could not be faulted.

"Now my coaching staff and I have a very difficult task in selecting the final squad that will go to the Olympic Games," concluded Arnold.

The Qantas Under 23s will take time out from their training camp in Darwin and will conduct a football coaching clinic tomorrow afternoon with Northern Territory junior football players before heading home on Tuesday.

The Australian Olympic Men's Football team will be named by the Australian Olympic Committee on Friday 4 July 2008 in Sydney.

Sydney FC :Adam Casey is fit.

Former Canberra junior, Sydney FC's Adam Casey has returned to full training after suffering a horrific leg injury just nine rounds into last season.

Casey is back in full pre-season training looking forward to a big season.

"The last two seasons have been a bit disappointing due to injuries. I was just getting some decent game time last season then I got injured.

"I was involved in every Olyroos squad when fit, but now it will be very hard to make the squad with no games planned before the Olympics. It's disappointing.

"We've recruited well. You look around the room at Sydney squad meetings, it's a very impressive squad," said Casey.

Adam Casey out for the season?

Spare a thought for former Canberra junior and Sydney FC player Adam Casey.

Reports this morning say Sydney FC's Adam Casey is out for the season with a broken tibia!

Casey, who had an impressive performance in Sydney's loss to to Adelaide United will be very disappointed. He was starting to get plenty of game time, albeit in various positions.

A young player needs games to build confidence and improve. This injury hopefully won't be to big a set-back for Adam.

Hopefully Canberra's Adam Casey and Belnorth/Belsouth junior can make a quick recovery. I wish him well.

Adam Casey in Jordan with the Olyroos

Canberra's Adam Casey is in Jordan for tonights vital Olympic qualifier for the Olyroos.

The Qantas Under 23s require one point from the match to ensure progression to the third and final stage of qualifying which commences in August. Australia are on eight points, three ahead of Iran who host Saudi Arabia with the two matches being played simultaneously. Saudi Arabia on 12 points have already qualified while Jordan on two points are out of contention.

The third stage features 12 teams split into three groups and will be held from August 22 - November 21, with only the three group winners representing Asia at the Beijing Olympic Games.

Kristian Sarkies and Leigh Broxham are both unavailable due to a mystery bug.

The 19-man squad in Jordan is:

Leigh Broxham (Melbourne Victory), Nathan Burns (Adelaide United), Adam Casey (Sydney FC), Adam D'Apuzzo (Newcastle Jets), Bruce Djite (Adelaide United), Aaron Downes (Chesterfield, England), Ersan Gulum (Vestel Manisaspor, Turkey), Troy Hearfield (Newcastle Jets), Neil Kilkenny (Birmingham City, England), Adrian Leijer (Melbourne Victory), Trent McClenahan (Hereford United, England), Mark Milligan (Sydney FC), Kristian Sarkies (Adelaide United), Tando Velaphi (Perth Glory), Dario Vidosic (Queensland Roar), Danny Vukovic (Central Coast Mariners), Nick Ward (QPR, England), David Williams (Brondby, Denmark), Ruben Zadkovich (Sydney FC)

Sydney lose 0-0 in Japan

Well, Sydney are out. They drew 0-0 overnight in Japan in front of 45,000 Urawa Red Diamond fans and miss out on a place in the next round of the Asian Champions League by just one point.

It was a strong performance by Sydney. They dominated the game with 60% of possession but couldn't find the breakthrough.

David Zdrillic missed a sitter from six yards after good work from David Carney and Alex Brosque. How Sydney needed that goal.

Canberra's Adam Casey came on in the 65 minute but was unable to find a goal.

Overall this shows Sydney needed to convert a chance here or one of the ten they had against Shanghai in the last 0-0 game.

A striker, a couple of million for a striker. The lack of money in the Australia game, means we get what we pay for. Sydney produced a wonderful performance all over the park bar the bit that really matters. The finishing.

With Adelaide an Melbourne Victory in next year's tournament it could be many year's before Sydney come this close to progressing again.

Good to see a small band of Sydney supporters in Japan.

Will Melbourne Victory do better than Sydney in the ACL?

Do Sydney need a striker for next season? Tell us what you think.

Adam Casey in Japan with Sydney tonight

Canberra's Adam Casey will be hoping to get on the field tonight in Saitama Japna. Sydney FC play Urawa Reds in front of 60,000 fans. (8.30 live on Fox, just forget the State of Origin...they have two more games, this is do-or die football!)

Sydney must win to go through to the next round.

Casey spoke to Football in the Capital saying, "I'll be nervous but if I get on, I'll be fine. It's the biggest crowd I've ever played in front of, it will be a fantastic experience."

Not so long ago Casey was running out for O'Connor Knights and Belconnen Blue Devils as he recovered from various injuries.

"When I finished at the AIS the A-League hadn't started so my career was a bit slow to get going."

He's making it up for it now. After stints with Wollongong Wolves in the NSW state league and New Zealand Knights in the A-League, he has just signed a two-year deal with Sydney FC.

"I've got a two-year deal which is great. My aim is to get as much game time as possible and improve as much as I can."

Adam will be giving Football in the Capital updates of his and Sydney FC's season all through the A-League.

What's the biggest crowd you ever played in front of? Let us know.
