Carl Valeri: Bloody Hell!

The boy from Tuggeranong United is having the ride of his life.

Not only has he played in most of the World Cup Qualifiers as the Socceroos qualified for South Africa....how good will it be to see a Canberran strutting the stage at the World Cup, ....but he's got one foot in the Serie A.

Valeri who is Captain of Grosseto who are in Serie B in Italy are involved in the play-offs this week to reach the holy grail, Serie A.

And Valeri's team won 2-0 overnight in the first leg of the play-offs to reach the Serie A.

Carl is on the brink of Serie A and how good would that be for him and the Socceroos prior to the World Cup.

Go you Tuggies boy!..and lets not forget Valeri played for the Socceroos no questions ask when his clubside were involved in their biggest game of their history...few have mentioned this dilemma, and commitment of the modern footballer.

Canberran is crucial for Aussie's World Cup 2010

Remember the Socceroos at the World Cup in Germany 2006. How could you forget one of Australia's greatest sporting moments?

How many Canberrans played against Carl in his junior days. Maybe beat him in a sprint or a tackle, maybe even nutmegged him.

Well Canberra's Carl Valeri, the former Tuggeranong United junior, is crucial to Australia's hopes to get to South Africa 2010.

Watch Carl early on Thursday in Tashkent, Uzbekistan as Australia open their campaign in the most important Aussie sporting date on the calender this month. He's a certainty to start.....because Vinnie's out..read FFA release below

EINDHOVEN AIRPORT, NETHERLANDS / SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA

Head Coach of the Qantas Socceroos, Pim Verbeek, has decided not to take midfielder Vincenzo Grella to Tashkent for the 2010 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Uzbekistan on Thursday morning (Australian time).

Verbeek said that while Grella's prognosis is "good" it is in Grella's best interests, as well as his club and Australia's, not to travel across Europe and return for a match in which he will not be ready to play.

Grella is returning to his Barclays English Premier League club, Blackburn, for continuing treatment.

The Qantas Socceroos arrive in Tashkent in the early hours of Monday morning for the opening game in round 4 of the Asian Football Confederation's group qualifiers.

The match between Uzbekistan and Australia will be broadcast live and exclusive on FOX Sports from 1.30am Thursday.

Australia's next game is against Qatar in Brisbane on 15 October.

$8 million for Canberran

No it's not for Canberra Raiders Golden Boy Todd Carney or even Brumbies Wallaby Stirling Mortlock.

Former Tuggeranong junior and Socceroo ace Carl Valeri, that's his expected transfer fee if he moves from Serie B club Grosetto in the next few weeks.

Which gives an insight into the value a Canberra A-League club/players could provide to their owners in years to come. Where would you invest?

And I should mention Bare from Gamba Osaka, you know the guy who played against Melbourne in the Asian Champions League this year. He's just signed for UAE side Al Ahli for $10 million. A lot of money starting to float around football in this part of the world.

Canberra's Carl Valeri has at least four Serie A Italian soccer clubs interested in signing him for next season, but the 5million euro transferprice that his Serie B club Grosseto is demanding is proving an obstacle.

Italian websites reported earlier this month that Serie A team CagliariCalcio based in the capital city of Sardinia, Cagliari was trying to secure the 23-year-old for the upcoming season. All three teams that gained promotion into the league this year, Chievo Verona, Bologna and Lecce, were also interested.

But Grosseto is demanding a 5million euro transfer fee, just over $8million Australian, for the former Canberra junior.

Cagliari has expressed the strongest interest so far mainly because its new coach Max Allegri has already coached Valeri for two years in Italy.

Allegri coached Valeri at SPAL when he was loaned there from Inter Milan in 2004, and then took Valeri to Grosseto when he took up the manager's position there. Another Italian football website, tuttomercatoweb.com, quotes Allegrias saying Valeri is ''the No1 goal for Cagliari in the midfield''. Cagliari president Massimo Cellinowas quoted on another website as saying he hoped to drive down the asking price by including players in part exchange.Valeri's father Walter, a former Capital Football president, said his son hoped to secure a transfer before the cut-off at the end of August.

''I've spoken to Carl and he's hoping to move this season, and he's spoken to his manager and he said Cagliari were definitely interested,'' Walter said.''So he just has to wait now and see what happens. But it's what he's wanted for a long time, so hopefully it works out.'

'When Valeri was in Australia for the Socceroos' World Cup qualifier games earlier this year he told The Canberra Times he hoped to play for a Serie A team this year, after captaining Grosseto up to Serie B from the third division Serie C over the past two years.
''I've been there three years and I hope it's time,'' Carl said last month.

''Unfortunately that isn't up to me, there has been a little bit of interest, but I'm not sure what might happen.

''I'd be sad to go, but at the same time I think there isn't much more I can do for Grosseto.
''I've played almost 100 games, captained the club up to Serie B, I think I've achieved everything I can there.'

'Valeri originally went to Italy as a teenager on a contract with Serie A giant Inter Milan, but was loaned out to SPAL and then Grosseto in 2005.
Grosseto then took full ownership of his contract last season, the club's first season in Serie B.

Valeri has two years left on his contract with Grosseto and started pre-season training with the club in Tuscany this week.

The transfer period will close at the end of August, when the 2008-09 Serie A season starts, and open again in January.

Canberra stars in the news.

Carl Valeri's contract is up in twelve months. How many more times will he have played for the Socceroos by then?

And then he's a free agent. So don't be surprised to see Carl move on from his Serie B side, Grosseto in the next few weeks. But where to?

Serie A, or a top Serie B club I reckon but you never know. Holland could be the go, although with an Italian agent I expect him to stay in Italy.

Nikolai Topor-Stanley played a rare game at centre-back for the Olyroos last night. They drew with Chile 1-1 in Darwin. FFA Release at the very end of this post.

Former Canberra Croatia now Canberra FC Ned Zelic was interviewed on SBS today and you can see Ned in his tourist cart with Scott McIntyre giving his thoughts on playing football in Georgia. Yes Ned is still playing!

Kaz Patafta and Shaun Ontong. Both Canberra lads are now at Newcastle Jets.

Kaz played in the recent 1-0 defeat of the Mariners whilst Shaun is out for three months with a foot injury. Cruel world football. We wish Shaun, who was a recent guest on Nearpost radio a speedy recovery.

Better news for Adam Casey. The Sydney FC forward/winger come right back is back playing after breaking his leg early last season. He played in the recent 0-0 game against Blacktown before being replaced by Deltra's boyfriend Irish popstar Brian McFadden. Good to see Adam back.

Talking recently from Sydney FC, Adam said, "When I look at the talent around the dressing room, there's some great players, but I'm determined to work hard and earn my place."

Caitlin Munoz joins fellow Canberrans Amy Chapman and Lydia Williams as the Matildas head to China with a very young side.

And a former Matilda, Amy Taylor, loved her time in Canberra, playing for Tuggeranong United, Canberra City ACTAS under Katrina Neuss before being a Matildas for 8 years. Wally Hovell and Neuss were just two of the locals Amy mentioned in an interview for the Nearpost which you can hear in coming weeks.

For now she's WIN TV Sports Presenter and host of Football Superstar which airs on Thursday on Fox 8 at 7:35pm. Amy talks about the show on Tuesday on Nearpost radio.

Qantas Under 23s Draw with Chile

The Qantas Under 23s played out an entertaining 1-all draw against the Chile Under 23s tonight in front of 1,780 fans at the Darwin Football Stadium. Kristian Sarkies opened the scoring for the Qantas Under 23s from the penalty spot in the 27th minute and Felipe Seymour equalised for the Chileans in the 67th minute with a clinical finish from inside the box.

Qantas Under 23s Head Coach Graham Arnold made 10 changes to the line-up for tonight's match with Mark Milligan the only player to start both games.

The match began at the same frenetic pace that was seen on Friday evening with the Chilean having the first attempt on goal in the 3rd minute, but five minutes later Kristian Sarkies had the Qantas Under 23s first shot which was expertly tipped over the bar by Gregory Saavedra in the Chilean goal.

The Qantas Under 23s continued to apply the pressure with Nikita Rukavytsya netting in the 21st minute but the goal was disallowed for off-side. But the Qantas Under 23s were on the scoreboard in the 27th minute when Kristian Sarkies calmly slotted home a penalty after David Williams had his shirt pulled in the box in a goal scoring opportunity.

Nikita Rukavytsya nearly doubled the lead in the 41st minute when his deft control in the box allowed him to unleash a stinging shot to the near post, but again Saavedra was on hand to make another crucial save.

After the half-time break, the Qantas Under 23s continued to push forward and had the bulk of possession and scoring opportunities. Had it not been for the goalkeeping heroics of Gregory Saavedra, who made a number of saves and interceptions, the Qantas Under 23s could have extended their lead on a number of occasions.

Just after the hour mark, Neil Kilkenny put Michael Zullo through but Saavedra was quick off his line and cleared the ball from Zullo's feet outside the area..

Chile's patience paid off midway through the second half when Felipe Seymour finished off a one-on-one opportunity against the Qantas Under 23s goalkeeper, Chris O'Connor, shooting low and hard to the bottom left corner of the goal.

After the match Graham Arnold was again pleased by with the performance of his players.

"Our players again performed well up against very good opposition tonight," said Arnold

"The purpose of this camp was for me to make critical selection decisions and also to prepare the players for the Beijing Olympic Games,"

"Based on that, this camp has been extremely successful, we have been very well looked after by everyone here in Darwin and the effort of all the boys could not be faulted.

"Now my coaching staff and I have a very difficult task in selecting the final squad that will go to the Olympic Games," concluded Arnold.

The Qantas Under 23s will take time out from their training camp in Darwin and will conduct a football coaching clinic tomorrow afternoon with Northern Territory junior football players before heading home on Tuesday.

The Australian Olympic Men's Football team will be named by the Australian Olympic Committee on Friday 4 July 2008 in Sydney.

Socceroos; Tuggers boys to start?

Tuggeranong United fans are heading to Sydney in big numbers for the Australia China game on the weekend.

And they are expected to be rewarded by seeing Carl Valeri and his former Under 11 Tuggers team-mate Nikolai Topor-Stanley in the starting line-up.

What the Armchair Aussies want, we get. So consider it done. Squad below.

SYDNEY, June 19 AAP - Socceroos coach Pim Verbeek has picked a youthful 18-man squad, including four uncapped players, to play China in the World Cup qualifying dead rubber on Sunday.
Harry Kewell will again captain the side at ANZ Stadium, in a new-look squad from the 3-1 win in Qatar on Sunday, which guaranteed Australia's progression to the next phase of qualifying.
The win has allowed Verbeek to rest key stars including Brett Emerton, Mark Bresciano and Vince Grella from the team to play China, who are already out of qualifying.
Verbeek has retained qualifying campaign regulars including Kewell, Jade North, Michael Beauchamp and Carl Valeri.
But he has drafted in a host of young stars including Danish-based striker David Williams, Leeds midfielder Neil Kilkenny, Adelaide striker Kristian Sarkies and Sydney FC recruit Stuart Musialik.

Williams, Musialik, Derby County's Ruben Zadkovich and Melbourne Victory defender Rodrigo Vargas are in line to make their senior debuts.

Dutch-based striker Brett Holman, who starred against Qatar, was expected to be retained for the match but he has not been named, paving the way for a possible first international start for Bruce Djite.

Teenage sensation Matthew Spiranovic is in line for his second senior appearance after making his debut in the friendly win over Ghana last month.
Michael Petkovic and Ante Covic will fight it out for a place in between the sticks with Mark Schwarzer suspended for the match.

SBS are reporting that Canberra's Socceroo Carl Valeri could be on the move, possibly to Serie A. Carl is Captain of Grosseto in Serie B.

No mean feat for a Canberran to Captain a team in a foreign country.

Who will be Tuggeranong's next Socceroo?

Carl Valeri may be out, but Canberra born, former Tuggeranong United junior, Nikolai Topor-Stanley is expected to gain his second cap for the Socceroos when he starts against Ghana in Sydney on Friday night.

Great news for Nikolai, great news for Canberra football fans, and Tuggers. Game is live on Fox Friday 8pm.

Then Saturday all you Tuggeranong football player and fans can wander down to your local oval and spot the next Valeri or Topor-Stanley. They both played for the same Tuggers Under 11 side coached by Walter Valeri. Two internationalists from the same Under 11 club team.

Could be a first in Australia. But who will Tuggers produce next?

Italians block Canberran

Canberra's Carl Valeri has missed out on an opportunity to stake his place in the Socceroos starting eleven against Ghana on Friday as his Italian club Grosseto, where Valeri is the Captain, has blocked his attendance.

Socceroos Coach Pim Verbeek had reached an agreement with Valeri's Coach on his recent European tour, but noted Italian owners often get involved. He was right!

Friday's game is not an official FIFA date so clubs can refuse to let their players leave.

Valeri will arrive in Brisbane next Tuesday in time for the crucial World Cup Iraq game.

And Valeri may have the last laugh; he may well be on the move this summer from Grosseto. So take that Mr Italian Football Club owner!

Tuggers boys in the mix!

Canberrans Carl Valeri and Nikolai Topor-Stanley will play alongside Harry Kewell in the upcoming Socceroos game against Ghana.

With David Carney the incumbent left back, albeit not playing at his club Sheffield United, Nikolai Topor-Stanley has a chance to put pressure on Carney for the permanent left-back position, if not in the coming games, certainly in the next twelve months.

Watch this space. Oh and Carl Valeri to start against Ghana. The Tuggers boys are doing well!

Which given how far we are ahead in Canberra, why are some clubs so reluctant to go the whole way. Get on with it Canberra, and finish the job.

And overheard on the weekend.

"Go on son push up" His son was in defence alongside another boy. His side could be seen way down the pitch all players surrounding the opposing goal.

"I can't Dad, I'm told I can't go past halfway!" And there he stood.

Carl Valeri his side had a 3-0 on the weekend. Must be safe from relegation now. Well done Grosseto Captain Carl Valeri in his and the clubs first season in Serie B. Where will Carl be next year?

FIFA World Club Champs to Australia in 2009 and 2010? FFA are expecting a decision before the FIFA Congress in Sydney. I'm registered, but at this point, not going, just in case you were wondering:)

Futsalroos started with a 3-1 win in their AFC tournament in Bangkok. Trent Flanigan got game time, Angelo Konstantinou did not. Top four sides qualify for October World Cup in Rio. Next game 3pm AEST today.

Scott McDonald scored for Celtic to keep the Hoops hopes of a title on track. Celtic are 4 pts ahead with one game left. Rangers have a UEFA CUP and Scottish Cup Final plus three league games to play.

The Tittle Tattle:

Scott McDonald, Carl Valeri, FourFourTwo stars go Nearpost, Rugby League a flop?, Ticket Sales, Melbourne Victory

Scott McDonald, Celtic's prolific scorer has done it again. Facing his old club Motherwell McDonald equalised before Celtic's Greek star Samaras scored the winner. McDonald's side are 8 points ahead of Rangers, but the Gers have 4 games in hand.

With Rangers having one eye on the UEFA Cup final, McDonald may just sneak a title medal in a few days time. Well as a one-eyed Celtic fan, here's hoping.

Carl Valeri's Grosseto side were winning 1-0 on Saturday about to gain some valuable points, when the game was abandoned. Reports say a policewomen on duty outside the ground shot herself, apparently committing suicide. The game was then stopped.

Nearpost Radio: FourFourTwo's recent magazine had a 'stars of the future' section. Two of the possible future stars are Jason Naidovski (Newcastle Jets) and Canberra's Kofi Danning. Both are on the Nearpost radio this week

Rugby League Friday night TV ratings are lower than Midsummer's Night Dreams and Better Home and Gardens. The Sun Herald seemed stunned that the Friday game, despite all the promotion on the media, regualarly attracts less than 20,000 people and always than 400,000 viewers in a city of 4 million.

I'm not that surprised:)

Ticket Sales: And for the Centenary Rugby League Test only 6,000 tickets have been sold. Melbourne Victory are already reporting sales of 40,000+ for the Juve friendly.

Am I more than this?

Listening into the Teleconference with Socceroos Coach Pim Verbeek this afternoon I decided it was time to ask my first cutting question of the day.

Pim, did you go and see Carl Valeri?

Well, I am from Canberra so thought it very appropriate. And now for my second and final important question.

Have you been to see Scott McDonald at Celtic?

And if you've followed this blog for any length of time those two questions just about sum me up!

Socceroos: Valeri, Kewell in, Viduka out.

Australian Coach Pim Verbeek speaking from Holland this afternoon says, "Mark Viduka is out," of the Socceroos games in June. He is currently playing with an achilles injury and may need an operation at the end of the English season.

"(Mark) He said he has a contract (with his club) until 2010 and he wants to finish with the World Cup. Whenever I'm fit, I'm ready for the Socceroos if you need me. So that is good," said Verbeek

But Liverpool's Harry Kewell is fit and will play. "Harry is not a question mark. He's training hard and will be in camp for the Ghana game," said Verbeek.

Canberra's Carl Valeri will be released for all games, including the Ghana game, if his club Grosseto are safe from relegation. "Valeri is keen to come," said Verbeek

Verbeek met with many players over the last few weeks and is flying to Japan today to check on Joel Griffiths and Eddy Bosnar.

"We have a few weeks to go here in Europe, so far we have all our players ready, we have some questions with the fitness of some players. Nothing is finalised but we have our plans ready," said Verbeek.

The Ghana game is a good possibility to "give some experience to players and see how they cope with the big game experience."

Josh Kennedy is expected to be fit for the last two games of the Bundesliga.

Scott Chipperfield is injured currently.

Scott McDonald will be available for Iraq, but the Ghana game will depend on Celtic's end of season title chase.

And four players' partners are expecting babies in June. Lucas Neill, Jacob Burns, Mile Sterjovski, and Josh Kennedy will all miss one or more of the qualifiers to be at the birth of their child. Michael Essien is out. Chelsea making the Champions League final put an end to his participation in this months friendly.

Carl Valeri on the move?

It's just a rumour.....but don't be surprised to see Socceroo Carl Valeri on the move at the end of the season.

Serie A clubs were rumoured to be circling during the January break but nothing happened.

Valeri is Captain of Italian Serie B side Grosseto and looks certain to achieve the clubs target of staying in Serie B at their historic first attempt.

Valeri, has one more year of his contract to go, but with his performances for the Socceroos increasing, few expect him to be at Grosseto next year.

Seeing Ruben Zadkovich move to Derby County made me wonder would Valeri be moving to England.

Valeri, who loves living in Italy, is determined to move to a club that is best for him. That means where he gets to play.

Australia would certainly benefit if Valeri move to a Serie A club and holds down a regular spot.

Good news for the 2010 World Cup side if it comes off.

Aussie Coach Pim Verbeek pops into Grosseto this week aiming to secure Valeri's release for the Ghana game.

But with Grosseto still having two games to go around that time it may not be as easy as Pim would like, particularly if Grosseto slump towards the relegation play-off zone over the next few weeks.

Six Matildas are playing or will shortly head overseas to play for foreign clubs as women's football continues to evolve.

Trouble getting Socceroos back for internationals, now it's the Matildas. Lisa De Vanna, Kate Gill (Sweden) Heather Garriock (Denmark) Collette McCallum, Sarah Walsh and Caitlin Munoz ( USA) will all have to readjust their club schedule if they are to play for Australia in coming weeks.

Olyroos Beijing Under 23 World Cup draw. Olyroos draw Serbia, Argentina and Ivory Coast.

Boca Juniors, The South American and Argentinean giants are to tour Australia. The game will be televised on SBS, and yes they still cover football. They will play an unnamed A-League side at Canberra Stadium. Okay I made up the venue bit. But could you imagine the future possibilities.

Canberra's Carl Valeri looks safe from relegation in Serie B. A 5-3 away win for Grosseto saw Captain Valeri's team secure a place in next year's Serie B I reckon, but will Valeri still be at the club?

Channel 9 want to show one live A-League next season. Fox won't let them. With Channel 10 showing the Beckham festical, Channel 9 after an A-League game who will show the Juventus game?
Also makes reports that football will match or beat Rugby Leagues TV Revenue in the next TV deal, admittedly many year off, not so surprising. And wouldn't 500 mill dollars change football forever in Australia.

Locally, ACT Government announce $400,000 for improved lights for Hawker Oval, and preparation for Synthetic surface and Andrew Barr expects more funds in the budget. Watch this space!

Two Tuggeranong United boys in Socceroos Squad

Well done to Nikolai Topor-Stanley and Carl Valeri. Both are heading to China for Wednesday's game.

And well done to Tuggeranong United!

Both played for Tuggeranong United Under 11 side coached by Canberra football legend Walter Valeri.

When was the last time two Canberrans were in the Socceroos squad? Has it ever happened?

When was the last time two boys from an Under 11 side anywhere in Australia made it to the Socceroos?
