ACT Grand Final shock upsets

Belconnen United thrashed Canberra FC 4-1 in the ACT men's Grand Final today and Belwest Foxes beat hot favourites Weston Creek 1-0 in the Women's final.

Belconnen United hadn't beaten Canberra FC in living memory or so it seemed despite these two side being the best clubs for a number of years in the local game.

Belconnen Coach Steve Forshaw wore his lucky Akubra hat, just like last week when his side beat Olympic and it worked again.

Forshaw who retired after the game could not have asked for a better finish.

After missing out on the winners medal by an extra-time goal last year many felt Belconnen who have a mixed season had less chance of winning today.

But the after a severe storm earlier, the sun came out to play and Belconnen matched the mood.

David Kemp opened the scoring early, local legend Danny Macor made it two in what could be his last game at this level.

Canberra FC produced a surprisingly lethargic, almost bizarre game by their standards.

Paul Ivanic got his 23rd goal of the season but the club who have produced so many great players down the years and are celebrating their 50th year in operation will be disappointed with this performance.

Canberra Coach Ivan Grucic said, "the best team won, so he couldn't be too disappointed."

But at 2-1 he must have thought his side had a sniff.

But Danny Macor and Dustin Wells combined to produce a goal to win any final.

A searching pass from Macor found inaugural Valeri medal winner Dustin Wells. He had a bit to do but he did it well. Went round one, was tripped, but managed to get back up and finish sensationally driving the ball over Canberra outstretched keeper Nathan Denham.

Taylor Beaton who has had an outstanding season wrapped up the game.

In the Women's final...

Belwest's Cian Maciejewski stole the show, or would have if she hadn't been sent off.

She drove the ball home in the third minute to pierce the normally strong Weston Creek defence.

An open flowing game saw chances for both sides. Maciejewski was in all the action.

She hit the post, placed a header just wide and then got sent from the field. But she won the game with her early strike.

Weston Creek fought well. Jenny Brew had a free kick which hit the bar, the Creek also hit the post.

It was that sort of game.

But for Belwest a sense of satisfaction having missed out on the final last year, a game they felt they deserved to be in.

The Murray medal, presented by former Australian and Canberra football FIFA Ambassador Julie Murray, went to Sophia Merkoureas of Belwest.

Both games will be on Channelvision later in the week and you can also watch them on the Channelvision website..... if you are a Belwest and Belconnen fan I suppose:)

ACT Premier League Wrap and ACT Rockets to miss out?

ACT Rockets to miss Win Stadium game?
Fed Cup winners thrashed at home, Woden Valley win Lifeline Cup and move off the bottom, Belconnen, Tuggeranong win.

All the ACT Men's Premier scores below but the big and disappointing news from my perspective is the ACT Rockets Illawarra clash pencilled in to be played at the Win Stadium before a Sydney FC home game looks to be quashed.

Capital Football are unable to change the Premier League fixtures it would appear. CEO Heather Reid will be on the Nearpost on Tuesday so we'll get the update then.

But if it's true the game is cancelled due to local fixture constraints why can't the players selected just go.

As much as Canberra City v Belconnen or Canberra FC O'Connor Knights is a big game, a chance for the players selected to play at the SFS could be the highlight of a local player's careers.

So if the game is on the cards to be played at Win Stadium, I say change the Men's draw, or the clubs could just release the players, although I guess many people would want to go and watch.

Ask the players selected what they would prefer. I reckon I'm right:) If I'm not let me know.

Anyway here are the scores from the weekend.

Capital Football Men's Premier League CANBERRA OLYMPIC 6 (S Barsley 2, O Wiederkehr 2, T Dries, A Butt) bt O'CONNOR KNIGHTS 0 at O'Connor Enclosed Oval.

Lifeline Cup:
Woden Valley defeated Canberra City 2-1 with goals from Jon Caggiano (signed up for on A-League poll:) and Marcia Zygmunt, (signed up) and Pat Ross-Magee replied for City.

Belconnen defeated ANU 4-0 with Danny Macor's replacement David Leet scoring a Macor like three, including a penalty. Matt Valeri got the other.

Coach Steve Forshaw (signed up) said his side, "didn't play well in the first half, but I'm delighted with the result, on a bumpy field it was a good performance.

Tuggeranong United beat Queanbeyan City 2-0 bursting Queanbeyan's recent good run.
19 year old Dale Westmore and Mark Shields scored for the victors. Andrew Bobinskas missed a penalty.

Next week Olympic take on Steve Forshaw's Belconnen. Forshaw said, "With Canberra FC so far ahead, the two sides have nothing to do but attack. It should be a great game, I'm expecting a feast of football."

ACT Wrap: Football on the rise

Canberra City off the bottom, Queanbeyan FC continue good form, Russ Gibb who supplied all the info for this report is the same Russ Gibb's you can find on FourFourTwo website....and more!

Canberra City thumped ANU FC 5-0 and moved off the bottom of the table with their first win of the season.

City keeper James Wood dislocated 2 fingers and striker Kevin Room went in goal, he even saved a few shots.

17 year old Zac Rando scored again for City, this time he netted twice and Pat Ross-Magee backed up from Friday night for the Rockets with a hat-trick for City. And City are off the bottom.

Queanbeyan United FC drew 1-1 with O'Connor Knights. And it could have been so different.

United led for much of the match through James Zdarnuk until Moshen Ravanparsa equalised right at the death. United's great recent run continues but to lose a goal at the death will hurt.

Knights Coach Dean Ugrinic said, "The first goal came from a goalkeeping error. We were flat, and unimaginative."

Canberra FC hit four past Tuggeranong United.

4-0 was the result. Kole Aitken opened the scoring in 26 minute with a right foot drive. Paul Ivanic couldn't score against the Mariners in the week but he netted with his head, or some thought his hand, just before the break. 2-0.

Two goals in three minutes finished the scoring.

Adam Spaleta belted one past Tuggies keeper Brett Dickens. Paul Ivanic latched onto a long ball over the top to complete the scoring.

Tuggeranongs best chance came four minutes from the end when Andrew Bobinskas hit the post.

IN OTHER NEWS:
Danny Macor retires from Premier League? Hear Danny on Nearpost radio this week.

Russ Gibbs promotes Canberra football on the FourFourTwo website. Nice one Russ.

And what did you think of the Canberra Times on Saturday. Great news on the A-League push, hope you'll give it your full support. And a whole page on football...in a Canberra paper.

Wow, nearly spilt my cappucino! Great stuff Canberra Times, Tim Gavel, Merryn Sherwood, Chris Dutton, and Paul Newman, the whole crew. Keep it up!

ACT Premier League Wrap.

Belconnen send a big warning to the Central Coast Mariners with a 0-0 draw with Queanbeyan City on the weekend, Canberra FC power on, Woden Valley grab their first win and Scott Barsley wins it for Olympic. Thanks To Russ Gibbs for the wrap below.

Belconnen 0 Queanbeyan City 0

"If we'd have played for forty years we'd never have scored," said Belconnen Coach Steve Forshaw.

Another great point for Queanbeyan, let's hope Belconnen can lift their game for the Mariners match on Wednesday, 7pm.

Meanwhile Canberra FC can see the finishing line...maybe. A 4-1 away win over O'Connor Knights sent further disappointment to the Belconnen side.

Paul Ivanic, Alex Castro, Adam Spaleta and Dom Giampaolo scored for Canberra. The game ended as a contest afte three goals came in the first fifteen minutes. Goal machine Goran Veljanovski replied for O'Connor.

Canberra City 2 Canberra Olympic 4

Zac Rando and Tom Davies scored for City, while Scott Barsley (2) Trent Flanigan and Travis Driers took the points for Olympic.

And well done to Woden Valley got their first win of the season. They beat ANU FC 3-1.Goals from Jon Caggiano (2) Marcia Zygmunt did the job. Jason Prestei scored for the Uni.

ACT Premier League: Ivanic scores Macor misses

Canberra FC stamped their authority on the ACT Premier League with a 1-0 win over Belconnen United at MacKellar Stadium on Saturday night.

All the news and scores as the results come in with special thanks to Russ Gibbs.

Paul Ivanic scored the only goal of the game for Canberra FC in the match of the round, ney the season!

Danny Macor missed a crucial penalty for Belconnen who are now five points adrift of the leaders.

Canberra Olympic 4 ANU FC 0

Trent Flanigan (2) and Scott Barsley (2) saw off the challenge of ANU at North Oval.

Coach Ian Heyward despite missing several players thought "it was good result. ANU always defend well, make it hard for teams to play."

Heyward who takes pride in the defensive qualities of the sides he manages noted, "we've conceded 7 goals all season, none against sides lower than us. We've got Canberra City next week and it gives us the chance to establish ourselves in the top four."

Canberra City 1 Queanbeyan City 2

Queanbeyan's push up the table continues. Coach Goran Neveski, who is leaving the club for the rest of the season to visit family overseas, was happy with the win.

0-0 at half-time, City's David Dexter was sent-off for a deliberate handball early in the second half. Mishko Naumoski converted.

Goran Jovanovski scored again for Q'beyan and Tim Malysaik scored a consolation for the young City side.

Zmejko Trakkoski will take over the coaching role for Q'beyan for the rest of the season.

Woden Valley 1 Tuggeranong United 1

John Caggiano scored for the Valley before Simon Gemmell equalised for Tuggers with his fourth of the season.

Tuggers Coach Scott Conlon was not best pleased. Tuggers had heaps of chances but couldn't convert.

In other news
Canberra Olympic/Belconnen United's Round 11 game scheduled for 29th June has been put back due to Olympic's young side being heavily involved with The Rockets/Mariners clash.

Belconnen were not concerned, but the game will now be played on 13th July.

The spirit of football

Referee Danny Parker said, "despite the 10-1 scoreline in the Third Division game between O'Connor Knights and Canberra FC, the game was played in the best spirit."

Sixth Grade: Tuggers v Uni Canberra Pumas

Meanwhile lower, much lower, down the Leagues Nearpost Football experts, Russ Gibbs and Chris Gottaas's sides battled it out.

Russ Gibbs said, "Football was the winner on the day, I scored one, you got that, and Chris didn't turn up to play. Injured or got a sniffle or something. But he was there on the sideline watching his team go down. Tuggers Div 6 beat UC Pumas 2-0, put that on your blog. Our resident Kiwi Api Pou scored the other."

"And I've got ligament trouble, but still made it on the field for the 9th Grade side later in the day. I scored a hat-trick in that one! Ben Morphy got two. We beat ADFA 5-2. We had a minutes silence for the ADFA's boy's involved in the crash during the week. They really are a great group of lads the ADFA guys," said Russ.

Tuggers Uber Coach Steve Beattie was reported to be very pleased with the third win on the spin.

Tuggers Queanbeyan, Olympic and Canberra FC win.

Canberra Times have a new Sports Editor. Paul Newman from the Central Coast. And he's a football fan so goes the word from the Coast. Good news! Welcome Paul.

And Tuggers down O'Connor Knights in ACT Men's Premier League. All the ACT Men's Premier Scores below. Thanks to Russ Gibbs for the inside word on the games.

AT A GLANCE
CANBERRA OLYMPIC 3 (S Barsley, S Vanzetti, T Flanigan) bt Woden Valley 0 at Woden. CANBERRA FC 2 (P Ivanic 2) bt CANBERRA CITY 0 Deakin Oval. QUEANBEYAN CITY 4 (M Naumoski, D Gjorgievski, G Josifovski, J Barac) bt ANU FC 1 (L Harbon) at Riverside Stadium. Tuggeranong 1 O'Connor Knights 0 (Andrew Bobinskas)

Tuggeranong 1 O'Connor Knights 0 (Andrew Bobinskas)
The Brett Holman of ACT Premier League Football, Andrew Bobinskas netted late in the game to stun O'Connor Knights.

Tuggeranong outplayed their more fancied opponents according to Nearpost football expert and Tuggers fan Russell Gibb.

Brent Chick played well in the middle of the park, Tuggers defence led by Jeremy Butler snuffed out ace scorer Goran Veljanovski.

Rockets representative keeper Brett Dickens made a number of saves including one stunning reflex saves to ensure the Knights were goal less on the day.

Interestingly when Dickens was asked at ACT Rockets training by Canberra FC keeper Nathan Denham, "Do you do shot training at Tuggers during the week," he replied without thinking, "Nah mate, I get all my shot practice on Saturdya afternoon!"

Nice one Brett! And nice win Tuggers.

Thanks to Russ Gibb for "the knowledge."

CANBERRA OLYMPIC 3 (S Barsley, S Vanzetti, T Flanigan) bt Woden Valley 0 at Woden.

Olympic Coach Ian Hayward was happy with the win, but is rueing his sides loss of players over the coming weeks.

Lucas Roth heads to the USA on a scholarship, Ruben Ares is out for the season with a knee problem, Steve Kounnas heads to Europe and Nick Keith has a season ending injury.

But his side had enough class to overcome a spirited Woden Valley side. Futsalroo keeper Angelo Konstantinou saved a penalty for Olympic and at the other end Scott Barsley, Steve Vanzetti and Trent Flanigan (pen) were knocking them in.

CANBERRA FC 2 (P Ivanic 2) bt CANBERRA CITY 0 Deakin Oval.

Did you know every club Paul Ivanic played for in the old National Soccer League quickly folded. No wonder no A-League club will touch him!

But he keeps knocking them in for Canberra FC. Another two for Ivanic takes FC to the top of the league.

Canberra City Coach Robbie Graham said, "we played well. We conceded goals in the second half."

Canberra FC continue to get the wins despite rumoured to be doing it easy at training these days.

It would be good to see the standard of fitness lifted across the league, particularly if young players want to move up another level. But Canberra FC and others need only train to a level required to win.

From all accounts they're not doing it to tough at Deakin Oval on training nights this season. But they keep on winning.

And next week they meet Belconnen United in the clash of the season on Saturday night.

Nearpost reporter Russ Gibbs predicts a Canberra FC, but when questioned further and realising the size of the town, he quickly added, "but it could easily be a draw or possibly even a Belco win." Fearless our Russ:)

QUEANBEYAN CITY 4 (M Naumoski, D Gjorgievski, G Josifovski, J Barac) bt ANU FC 1 (L Harbon) at Riverside Stadium.

Queanbeyan City clamed their first win, and now have gone three games undefeated.

And it could have been more. Coach Goran Neveski was very happy. He said, his side "had a good pre-season then had some internal problems and this showed on the pitch. But now we are playing well. And we need to beat teams like ANU if we are to climb the table."

Next week they are hoping for another win against Canberra City. Not sure Canberra City will be so keen to oblige.

ACT Men's Premier League

Canberra FC and Belconnen win, Olympic drop points, O'Connor at the death.

Canberra FC defeated ANU FC 4-2. Canberra FC raced to a 3-0 half-time lead, sat in their new dressing rooms and thought the game was over.

ANU hit back to make it 3-2 before Canberra re-awoke and stuck one in. Kole Aitken 2, Paul Ivanic of course and Alex Castro scored for Canberra.

Canberra FC closed the gap on Belconnen who beat Tuggeranong United 1-0 in front of a $5 per person crowd. See earlier post for Belco report.

Olympic 0 Queanbeyan City 0

City Coach Goran Neveski was happy but couldn't believe his side didn't win as they had the better chances. In fact he's disappointed they haven't picked up six points from the last two games.

Still encouraging signs for City and they hope to get their first win against ANU FC next week. I'm sure ANU will have other thoughts.

As for Olympic, a top two finish is almost beyond them surely, even at this stage of the season.

O'Connor Knights 1 Woden Valley 0

Football can be a cruel game. Ask the Iraqi's and ask the lads from Woden Valley. Coach Paul Gagetti said his side had 60% of possession, and had the better chances. Martin Zygmunt again shone for Valley but unfortunately after Tal Evans was sent off in the 80th minute the Knights scored in the last minute.

Isn't that just typical of football?

Is Tal Evans a marked man? His second send-off, by the same referee, and by all accounts only one was worth a booking.

Still Woden, and Queanbeyan continue to improve as the season goes on, putting pressure on their more fancied opponents.

Canberra Olympic the big losers this weekend. Coach Ian Heyward won't be happy with that. Other results went to form. Hats off to Queanbeyan City again, that's two points in two weeks.

Canberra World Cup bid gathers.

Belconnen beat Tuggeranong United 1-0 in ACT men's Premier League, Canberra City stunned Belconnen 1-0 in the Women's game yesterday, but the big news in town was the plans for World Cup 2018 to be held at TWO venues in Canberra!

Belco defender Lee Petrowkowsi scored the only a goal. But Tuggers keeper Brett Dickens saved the day on many many occasions.

Nearpost Reporter Russ Gibbs was unsighted for most of the first half, along with a hardy group of Tuggers fans who stood at the gate, amazed to see Belconnen charging $5 to watch the lads from Tuggeranong.

Who needs Fuelwatch when you've got Belco watch!

"Why should I pay $5 to watch the Tuggers boys when I can do it for free every other week?" whinged the Englishman.

Unfortunately the Nearpost matchday budget runs to $1 and Russ didn't have his press pass, so his report is seriously impaired. He had lots of talk of hitting posts, players having cross wires and the like as he peered through the gate!

Still like all good grounds around the World the gates open at half-time, to let the patrons out, and Russ was in for FREE!

He asked around why the charge.

A spokesman for Belconnen said, "We want to upgrade the ground for the 2018 World Cup. You know maybe another Stand, an Executive box or two. We think the $5 fee is about right."

Gibbs was stunned. He discussed it with the Tuggers Committee attending the game.

"We've got plans ourselves. We're hoping to get World Cup games at Kambah No. 2 Oval. It's perfectly located, close to the Parkway. You can just nip in your car and be in Sydney in 3 hours.

"Can you imagine Serbia v Ivory Coast at Number Two Oval. The Hyperdome would love it."

Gibbs even more stunned forked out $4 for a kranski, saw only one goal, and went home thoroughly miserable. But he'll bring his press pass next week, won't he!

Don't they know who you are Russ?

Local News Wrap. Canberra FC the winners

Women's League news, Mens Premier Scores round-up with thanks to Russ Gibbs.

The push is on to secure a Canberra team in the women's league. With a decision expected on the make up of the new league soon, hope is growing that a region that has produced more women national players than Victoria, Western Australia and South Australia in recent years, will be in the league.

Men's League.
Canberra FC were the big winners on the weekend. They were the only team to win and close that gap to just one point on league leaders Belconnen who could only draw. The other winners were probably the ANU...who didn't play!

Great results for Queanbeyan City and Canberra City. Queanbeyan secured their first point of the season. And Canberra City grabbed a point against the higher placed Tuggeranong United.

Canberra FC 2 v 1 Canberra Olympic
Paul Ivanic scored, again, and John Ison got the winner ten minutes from time.

Tuggeranong United 1 v 1 Canberra City
Canberra City's Kevin Room scored with an overhead volley just before half-time. Simon Gemmell scored his third of the season eleven minutes into the second half.

City President Arthur Huggins was pleased with the result. More evidence of an improving Canberra City side?

O'Connor Knights 1 v 1 Belconnen United
Big clash with both sides sharing the points. David Leet scored the Belconnen goal, but with Canberra FC winning this could prove costly dropped points for both sides.

Woden Valley 2 v 2 Queanbeyan City
Goran Josifovski scored two as Queanbeyan City earned their first point of the season

Belconnen 16 points
Canberra FC 15
O'Connor Knights 9
Olympic 7
ANU 7
Tuggeranong 5

Mariners to play in Canberra

Central Coast Mariners will play two pre-season friendly games in Canberra in late June. One against Belconnen United and the ACT Rockets at Deakin Stadium.

Mariners set sail for Canberra in late June

After enjoying the sights and sounds of the nation’s capital for the first time last year, the Central Coast Mariners are set to return to Canberra for a pair of trial matches in late June as part of ongoing preparations for the clubs fourth Hyundai A-League campaign.

The reigning Hyundai A-League Premiers have been invited to the Australian Capital Territory by Capital Football, one of seven grassroots associations served by a partnership with the Mariners.

While in Canberra, the Mariners will playoff against powerhouse local club Belconnen United on Wednesday, 25 June and against the ACT Rockets – a representative squad made up of the best players plying their trade in the local ACT Premier League, on Friday, 27 June.

The Mariners will play the ACT Rockets at the newly refurbished Deakin Football Centre and will take on Belconnen United at the Belconnen Soccer Centre, which first hosted Lawrie McKinna’s charges almost one year prior to the upcoming fixture.

With the Mariners also confirmed for a sojourn to central Queensland some two weeks before the aforementioned matches in the ACT, the yellow and navy’s pre-season campaign is shaping up to be their most thorough yet.

"Since formalising an arrangement with Capital Football in November of last year, we have enjoyed an outstanding relationship with our partners in Canberra and our visit in late June will allow us to further develop our ties with Capital Football, footballers in Canberra and the ACT community at large," said Mariners Executive Chairman Lyall Gorman.

"We are extremely thankful to everyone at Capital Football and Belconnen United for making these fixtures a reality and I am certain that our playing squad will benefit from another trip away together ahead of the Hyundai A-League kick off.

"Furthermore, these matches provide the best players from the ACT Premier League with an ideal chance to test themselves against the Premiers of Australia, an opportunity that I’m sure will be relished by all wearing the shirts of Belconnen United or the ACT Rockets."

Canberra has traditionally been a happy hunting ground for the Mariners, who recorded back-to-back victories while in the nation’s capital prior to the Hyundai A-League 2007/08 season.

Nik Mrdja’s brace in addition to goals from Adam Kwasnik and Damien Brown saw the Mariners home 4-0 against Belconnen United in late June, before the team returned one month later to thrash Sydney FC 3-0 in the final Group B match of the 2007 Pre-Season Cup.

The yellow and navy’s current line up consists of several players with experience in Canberra, with Damien Brown, Andrew Clark and Nik Mrdja each having played for former National Soccer League club the Canberra Cosmos at various stages before linking with the Mariners.

The Mariners kick off their pre-season program against the Central Coast Lightning at Pluim Park tomorrow, Tuesday, 20 May. Kick off is at 7.30pm.

James Ward stuns O'Connor Knights

A new ball, more goals, and team of the round Canberra City grab a point. All the ACT Men's Premier League below.

It might be Woden Valley's 20th birthday but Belconnen United celebrated by downing Woden Valley 3-1 on Saturday. No surprise there. David Leet, David Kemp and a Danny Macor last minute penalty secured the points. Tim Womack scored for Woden Valley. Happy birthday Woden!

Canberra FC pumped Queanbeyan City 7-0. A one-sided affair by all accounts.

Tuggeranong United and ANUFC, like all clubs, used the new Euro2008 ball and if the Euro's follow this 3-3 result Canberra's Joe Simunic (Croatia) and Woden Valley friend Henrik Larsson (Sweden, yes he's back) will be counting goals on both hands.

Tim Cole, Tuggers 17 year old opened the scoring, James Rendinia equalised in the last minute before half-time for ANU. Alex Tileman and Yosef Zamora made it 3-1, Tim Mathas, former ANU player pulled one back, and with 2 minutes to go Mark Shields levelled it. A cracker?

Not according to Nearpost Expert Russ Gibbs. "It was dire football, diabolical. The common consent from the players is that the new ball is all about goals. But it didn't make for a great game."

And in the surprise of the round Canberra City drew 1-1 away to O'Connor Knights. Ben Barac scored after 14 minutes for O'Connor before Leon Tarbotten equalised. James Ward in the City goal was outstanding. Canberra City will be really pleased with the point. Not so O'Connor Knights.

So a disappointing defeat, or the size of it,for Queanbeyan City, Belco,Canberra FC plough on but Canberra City grab a vital and impressive point.

Next week Canberra City have Tuggers, so is a City resurgence in the wind!

Football this week:
Inter to win in Italy.
And Nearpost Man United fan Russ Gibbs reckons it's United to win the Champions League..by a goal, then again it could be Chelsea he thinks. Nice one Russ.

Me? The big game of the week apart from Adelaide United, Matildas and Socceroos is on Friday morning Australia time.

With Rangers drawing overnight, Celtic just need to win, just a win imagine, to grab the Scottish title. Aussie Scott McDonald, go on my son you can do it!

Kevin Keegan talks ACT Premier Football?

Kevin Keegan has warned that the Premier League is in danger of becoming "boring" if the current big four continue to dominate.
"But for the last few years and maybe the next few years, they are going to say you can only see two or three teams winning it (the Premier League).

Was he talking about the ACT Men's Premier League..here's THIS WEEKENDS RESULTS!

Canberra Olympic 2 Tuggeranong Battle Cats United 0

Despite having a couple of players (Angelo Konstantinou and Trent Flanigan) in Bangkok with Futsalroos taking on Turkmenistan tonight, Olympic won 2-0 with goals from Scott Barsley and Travis Dries.

And clearly any signs of managerial dispute have been well settled. Nearpost Russ Gibbs, a Tuggers boy, was grinning from ear to ear this week as he thought internal squabbles at Olympic would assist his Battle Cats. Sorry Russ!

Belconnen United 4 Canberra City 0

No real surprise here. Except Danny Macor didn't score. Canberra City put in a good performance despite the loss. Young rising star Scott Unterrheiner missed a couple of chances early on, Kevin Room went close hitting the bar before goals from David Leet (2) Cameron Reinhart and Dustin Wells (pen) did the job.

Chris Jones was sent off for Canberra City late on, having brought down David Leet as he honed in on goal. Wells converted the penalty.

Zac Maybury had another good game for City.

Woden Valley 0 Canberra FC 3

Canberra pubs have been filled this season with the "Canberra FC are too old," rumours. But where is the evidence?

Another comfortable win with Paul Ivanic 2 and Alex Castro grabbing his usual goal.
What will they talk about in Canberra pubs this week?

ANU FC 1 O'Connor Knights 2
Perhaps the match of the round. ANU are proving a strong side this season. Possible top four contenders as predicted by Belconnen's Danny Macor early in the season.

But are they? n England they talked of Everton finishing ahead of Liverpool but where are the Toffees now!

Early days for ANU but, despite a narrow defeat here, they will have to grab a few points and occasional wins from the big four if they are to maintain their threat.

Olympic: Crisis what crisis!

Like a threatening storm cloud at Back o'Bourke, talk of Canberra Olympic's players refusing to play on the weekend died with the morning sun.

Coach Ian Hayward is back. The players will play against Tuggeranong United on Saturday. So it's a case of crisis, what crises!

Much to the disappointment of Nearpost Host Russell Gibbs, a Tuggers player, who had hoped his club would pick up three easy points. Nice thought Russ:)

Still even in Bourke it will rain eventually, so Coach Ian Hayward may be back, but will he feel able to stay?

Keep watching the horizon.

Olympic in turmoil?

Local Canberra Olympic Coach Ian Hayward is said to have resigned from the club after Sundays 3-3 draw with O'Connor Knights.

A players meeting to discuss the situation was held this evening with the outcome still not known. One insider said the players may not play against Tuggeranong United on the weekend if the issue isn't resolved in Hayward's favour.

Sources close to the Club state "player selection issues" have left Hayward with no choice but to step down.

Hayward a long-time respected local football Coach has lead the club to previous success.

Has he resigned? Will he return? Watch this space!

Belconnen had to wait for a Danny Macor penalty to give them the three points over ANU. New signing Dustin Wells scored his first goal of the season, Alex Dalgleish hit home for the Uni side, before Macor sealed the win.

Canberra Olympic and O'Connor Knights played out a cracking 3-3 draw. Two well matched sides, Fec Cup winners O'Connor Knights scored through Goran Veljanovski, Moshen Ravanparsa, and Steve Rezo.

Queanbeyan went down to their third straight defeat. Tuggeranong won 4-1 with all the goals coming in a four minute period either side of half-time.
Andrew Bobinskas gave Tuggeranong the lead, Jimmy McClaughlan made it 2-0 before Goran Josifovski hit back back for Queanbeyan.

Immediately after the break Simon Gemmell scored two, to make it 4-1. James Barac was sent off for Queanbeyan.

Canberra City and Woden Valley played out a 1-1 draw. 16 year old Scott Unterrheiner scored for City while Marcin Zygmunt hit back for Woden.

ACT Men's Season Opener

"Canberra Olympics Ruben Ares ran the show, Ben Doyle was best for City," said Nearpost reporter Russ Gibbs.

Catch Russ Gibbs and Jeremy Butlers Premier League preview on Tuesday on the Nearpost Radio show 6.30:7.30pm.

All the scores below:

Canberra Olympic beat Canberra City 2-0 in today's ACT Men's Premier League match.
ANU 3 Woden Valley 1 won the season opener yesterday.
Canberra FC 3 O'Connor Knights 1
Belconnen United 4 Queanbeyan City 0 (Danny Macor 2, Cameron Reinhart, Callum Beaton.)

O'Connor Knights lead 1-0 but Canberra FC marked their new Stadium debut with a win. 2 goals from Paul Ivanic and 1 from Adam Spaleta sealed the win. Revenge for last weeks Federation Cup defeat, no doubt.

Olympic 2 Canberra City 0. That was the score but the main talking point was the numbers sent-off from each side.
Olympic saw Keith Mihailakis and Robert Shroder sent off while Canberra City had Zac Maybury dismissed for dissent.
Ruben Ares won the day with his performamce. The goals were scored by Scott Barsley, a header and Travis Dries.

ANU and Belconnen United both scored impressive wins on the opening day of the season.

Hear Russ Gibbs report on Tuesday. Russ will be out and about next week for more reports.
