How many touches do your club A-League midfielders take on the ball?

Ten years ago research shows that midfielders in Europe had 6-8 touches every time they got the ball.

Five years ago it was down to 3-5.

Now studying the Quarter Finals of last years Champions League it was down to an average of 1.8 touches per midfielder.

Who says?

Coach from Dinamo Zagrab one of the top ten Youth Development Production Factories in Europe. Check the video here.

Check out your club on the weekend. Sydney FC fan? Oh you can't guess Stuey Musialik's average was a little higher - you know I think it might have been!

Asia on the line for Melbourne this Saturday

Melbourne v Sydney is always a big game in the A-League. Big crowds, send-off's thrashings we've had the lot.

This Saturday's is bigger than most.

Should Melbourne win they would be six points clear with 8 to play. Who would bet against them finishing top of the league and grabbing that crucial first Asian Champions League qualification spot.

And that would mean Melbourne a club that plans better than most in the A-League would be guaranteed two years in the ACL before the finals even start.

Barcelona, Man Utd and the like are always in the Euro Champs League, and if Melbourne make it again they will more evidence to say they are Australia's biggest and best football club on and off the field.

If Melbourne score first, at home, they will win and Asia is theirs.

Aloisi the new Zdrillic?

Sydney drew with Queensland Roar last night 1-1. A good game and with the Roar leading 1-0, Australia's fattest import Charlie Miller heading towards goal with a minute to play....there could be only one winner.

Charlie, okay I'm a Celtic fan, and the wee Ger is scoring goals galore despite his girth, was sure to score to make it 2-0 at the death.

Much like Michael Zullo did last week in Melbourne. But he struggled to get to the ball and blasted into the small group of Roar fans behind the goals.

Nay bother, game over.

But as often happens in the A-League this season a goal comes in the last ten seconds.

Sydney had played "Fosteresque" nice passing football all night particularly once they'd gone behind early in the second half. But in truth their forward play where it counts was woeful.

Hardly a shot all night nor an attacking ball of note.

In fact not since John Aloisi's played, who had his best game last night, has Sydney mark 4 looked potent.

This was a team that put three past the Central Coast early on. Without Aloisi!

Anyway the ball was slung in and fell to Musialik who placed it home. 1-1 Cue delirium in the stands, but really Sydney offered little.

Just after half-time Charlie Miller, the slowest man on the field, had found space behind Stuey Musialik and touched the ball about ten times before the Sydney defence thought "hey up, this guy can score from here," but it was too late as Charlie wellied it past Clint Bolton 1-0.

What an import the Roar have in Miller, not to mention his five goals. Good work Charlie, I'm loving it.

And Aloisi, cut his hair to be like Zdrillic and now looks like him and is starting to play like him.

Tries hard, runs a lot just not very fast, is strong but just can't score.

And when you see Charlie Miller scoring, Reinaldo creating havoc with his mobility, Bruce Djite last season, Cristiano for Adelaide it seems the older reputable Aussie striker can't make it in the young mans A-League.

David Zdrillic, Ante Milicic, Paul Agostino, and now John Aloisi.

Aloisi is not a lone striker, never has been in my view....or Gus Hiddinks.

And his lack of pace is playing right into defenders hands.

Gary Van Egmond recognised this in last years Grand Final, every club must be delighted to see Aloisi setting up for an afternoons stroll around the box.

Sure if he gets a chance he may well score, but he hasn't yet.

And Sydney are now dropping points, or maybe still saving them.

Alex Brosque is restricted now by Aloisi's central position. Mark Bridge slung wide as well.

Against the Mariners it was the creativity of Brosque, Bridge and Corica than appealed. Movement across positions. Hard to track and players appear faster when moving with some freedom.

When Aloisi is in pole position Sydney's assets appear stunted. Bridge and Brosque told to toe the line. Stevie Corica and John Aloisi lacking pace to hurt any team.

Shannon Cole has been moved from an attacking position to full-back although he still got more balls into the box then any other player.

Adam Casey has wicked pace, Adam Biddle is strong and quick, Brendan Santalab too. As the game went on Kossie needs to play his bench. At least two of the pacey young players could be called on. It wouldn't hurt the impact surely. Ask Frank Farina.

So what will Kossie do?

Persevere and hope Aloisi scores? He will score eventually. But enough?

And more importantly will Sydney score enough with Aloisi the so-called main strike weapon.

Seven games gone and Aloisi has shown little for anyone to fear.

More significantly he is restricting the Sydney style of play and potential creativity and excitement this Sydney side could produce.

Don't believe me?

Look at what Archie Thompson is doing for Melbourne this year. For that matter Danny Allsopp.

Two strikers. Mobile.

If Aloisi is to succeed the formation needs to change. Two strikers. But in the pacy modern game who can risk that when the slowing Steve Corica is just behind.

Not to mention Stuey Musialik still some way off the pace of the games and Terry McFlynn a player of some note, but still limited in forward play.

Queensland the ever-ready men didn't look so ever-ready last night. In the last 15 they couldn't get forward. Not so energetic after all.

But a great game of cat and mouse but Sydney need to revisit the attacking plan and dare I say it, leave Aloisi on the bench.

Or are we about to see another Zdrillic unfold.

And remember Aloisi is three times the cost and is signed up for next year.

And he won't be any quicker then will he?

Maybe the Gold Coast should buy him!

ACT Youth Rockets to play Sydney FC?

Majura junior, Kofi Danning to star for Sydney FC Youth and Sam Munro in the Sydney squad see below....

ACT Young Rockets have been training for the past four weeks and look like they have a number of fixtures against A-League Youth teams lined up.

They could start as early as the opening A-League Youth League round against Sydney FC if all goes to plan on Friday 26th September, with further games against the Central Coast, Newcastle Jets and possibly Melbourne Jets to follow.

It is a great opportunity for the young players of the ACT and provides them a chance to show case their skills.

Sydney FC Press Release starts here:

Sydney set for start of Youth League

In just a few weeks time there’ll be an important new player on the Australian football landscape, with the FFA’s National Youth League competition set to kick off in the last weekend of September.

After months of trials and tribulations, Sydney FC youth coach, Steve O’Connor has now finalised his squad, and he’s excited about the opportunity the league will offer the next generation of Australian footballers.

“I think it is important because it gives pathways for all out talented young players so that they know the way for them to get to the A-League is by getting into a Youth League team,” said O’Connor.

With most of Sydney’s players coming from the ranks of the New South Wales Premier League, O’Connor has had to bide his time waiting to assemble his squad, and the side has only recently stepped up its preparations for the coming season.

Despite the slow start, squad-members, Matt Jurman and Robbie Mileski have already picked up first-team experience during the opening rounds of the Hyundai A-League season, and the Sydney mentor is keen to ensure all his young charges appreciate the chance they’re about to be given.

“I want them to be focused on that opportunity and be aware of it that they’re playing for positions,” explained O’Connor. “Hopefully they’ll put a bit of pressure on the senior players because in some respects they’ve had a bit of a charmed life over the last 3 years without very much pressure, so this changes the landscape a little bit.”

There are only 12 places in FC’s Youth Team, with the side to be bolstered week-to-week by un-selected players from the senior squad.

‘Football Superstar’ winner, Adam Hett was one of Sydney’s first signings, but a season ending knee injury has seen the Perth player replaced in O’Connor’s final side.

“It’s unfortunate for Adam but we’ll keep track of his recovery with an eye to next season,” said the former AIS Coach. “His bad luck was somebody else’s good fortune though, I suppose, but it’s all done and dusted now and we’ll see how we go in the competition.”

This Saturday the entire Youth Team will be introduced to the Sydney faithful at the SFS, at half-time in FC’s Hyundai A-League clash with Adelaide United.

Sydney will enjoy a bye in the first round of the National Youth League and will begin its campaign on October 4 against Queensland.

The final squad is as follows:

Name Age Position Former Club
Vedran JANJETOVIC 21 Goalkeeper Sydney United
Sam MUNRO 17 Defender AIS – Canberra

Youth League update: Sydney FC.

The Youth of Sydney, and Australia, are on the march.

"There is plenty of talent in Sydney that's for sure," said Sydney FC Coach Steve O'Connor.

"We're trying to put in place pathways so the youth of Sydney know the way to the A-League."

For the first time in many years, a National Youth League will start in September. This time there is a real contract, a real pathway, and a professional televised league at the end of the rainbow.

With James Holland bursting into the Socceroos, Nathan Burns, Dario Vidosic and Michael Zullo all filling newpaper columns, a Youth team contract never meant so much.

Sydney FC are putting together a Youth team, and an Academy beneath that, as they attempt to find the future stars of Sydney kids most popular participation sport.

Imagine a Nathan Burns or Bruce Djite. No longer heading for Adelaide and overseas. But through an Academy, a Youth team and then into the Sydney FC A-League side.

And who knows Sydney could be banking the $1.5 million dollars that Adelaide have for the sale of these two players, when and if the players do head o/s. With sell-on fees as well. Australian Club's need your boys.

Train them, play them and sell them may become the message.

As much as we don't want to see players go overseas too quickly, if they do, the increased revenues to the Australian clubs will be welcome.

No other code has such a player drain, or alternatively, an overseas transfer revenue stream.

So Sydney FC have started trials. 40 boys turned up last week on Monday night, another 40 or so this week.

It's a slow process, with most NSW Premier League not too keen to release their talent. Sydney FC or not. These clubs want to ensure their NSW Premier League survival or fight for trophies.

It's early days but Sydney FC are already behind the Mariners. The "little club" from the North have raided Sydney territory already. On a number of occasions.

Sydney are full with their Under 20 A-League players, and have little financial ways to move with older players on long contracts.

But Steve O'Connor is very confident in the quality of the talent available.

"There's plenty of players, plenty of good talent out there, I'm not worried about that."

And that's encouraging news for the fans. A new Nathan Burns, David Carney, Bruce Djite and more should be flowing through in greater numbers than ever before.

The pathway is becoming clear for the talent of Australia, playing weekend football in their hundred's of thousands.

Are you after any players from Canberra Steve?

"I'm not going to tell you that!"

Mark Milligan to Arsenal?

Mark Milligan to Arsenal, according to Simon Hill on FoxSports tonight.

And the team went on to say Milligan could be replacing Matthew Flameni who is set to leave.

Well there is no doubting Milligan's class, although this season he struggled at times, but a move to Arsenal would surprise most of us.

And if he makes the starting eleven regularly before Christmas, maybe the Sydney FC fairweather fans need to start appreciating who they are watching each week!

Good luck Millsy, hope it works out.

Speaking on Total Football tonight Sydney FC Coach John Kosmina was asked, "where is Mark Milligan?"

"I don't know," said Kossie.

Well Kossie he's been in Canberra, with your new Sydney FC Coach Steve O'Connor, at the AIS for the last few days, doing some rehab training with the Under 20's.

Does Kossie really not know?.....hmmmmn....me thinks not.

Why is Steve O'Connor so happy!

"Smile Steve, you're off to Sydney FC," said the photographer and at that point Rocky as he's known in football circles, lifted his head and gave the biggest smile ever!

Steve was a great guest, wit, football stories and insight, a radio hosts dream. Pity we only had an hour.

He told us how Mark Viduka drove everyone mad in the Residences at the AIS bouncing the ball against his dorm wall with his head.

How Vinnie Grella demanded to be taught how to hit long balls into space, how to control the ball in tight situations, how Lucas Neill, Mark Viduka, Josip Skoko, Joe Simunic, and Craig Moore all played in the same AIS team at one point.

Has there ever been such an intake?

And he told us how he's off to Sydney FC. A challenge, a big challenge with lots of uncertainty but one that needs to be done and done well.

Total Football on Fox Sports

Haven't got the Fox on, don't worry I'll fill you in.

Robbie Slater, when asked about the impact of John Aloisi signing for Sydney FC, just ranted about what Dwight Yorke would bring and how good he would be for Sydney on and off the field.

Host Andy Harper tried to get Robbie to focus on Aloisi but Robbie was having none of it. More Dwight than you could hope for unless Robbie was an agent. And Robbie did say he'd spoken to Dwight and he would play for a lot less than people think.

It was strange stuff.

Will Dwight be back?

Dwight wants a two year deal it would seem. He was slow last time he was here. Two years is a long long time for a 36 year old. Give Dwight a miss I say.

Too risky, and I know he is still playing in the Premier League.

Sydney FC George Perry says....

"The coverage (Juninho) got when he arrived was fantastic and he really brings people along as well,"
said Sydney FC Chairman George Perry.

Funny didn't see any extra fans at the SFS in the first ten home games this year. On the other hand maybe he thinks they would have only got 5,000 a week without him...or maybe he's just talking about Press Conferences.

Yeah that must be it, good work Juninho, sign him up. He pulls em in!

Finals start with a tactical draw

Sydney blew a chance to take a lead to Brisbane next week. 0-0. No surprises there.

But Juninho created some wonderful wonderful chances for Alex Brosque and he missed the lot.

He was subbed!

The game was fast and furious.

The Roar flew around the park, and Sydney were cautious playing very deep with only half a forward line.

For a team playing at home it was disappointing but given the teams ageing legs, and away record, a 0-0 draw is not bad for Sydney.

And of course Queensland Roar rarely win a pressure filled game at home do they.

Funny moment

The Cove went ballistic for Patrick to come on. He got a standing ovation before he came on. He was crap. Often has been. Why he got a massive cheer I'll never know.

What has he shown for Sydney FC. Not much.

Best on park

Roar keeper Griffin McMaster had some scary moments but he saved the Roar defence time and time again. He's a keeper and he's crazy.

Juninho: Gave us all some real moments of class even when playing like everyone else at headless chuck speed.

Coaches award

Think Frank Farina edged it in the beginning but in fairness Kossie did a good job with limited resources. He has so little forward firepower.

Farina had his troops well marshaled, they are super fit and chased the old men of Sydney all over the park.

Kossie made more changes, tried to tweak things here and there, and probably saw his team improve, as a result, as the game went on.

Kossie will hope to win 1-0 away. Can Farina bring a Roar side home with all the pressure of the home crowd on them?

Well it will be a cracker. Don't be surprised to see one or even two sent from the field.

The Young Roar

Well Robbie Kruse has looked tired for weeks and as a result the Roar lack a spark. One point from nine, no wins in four, despite what the commentators say, this Roar team is no sure thing.

Did they create a real chance? Marcinho's shot's into the crowd are not chances. Has any professional footballer ever produced such poor shots.

Oh I forgot Rainaldo.

So next week, Sydney will attempt to hold the Roar out and hit them on the break. An early Sydney goal could kill the game.

But this time, I think with a huge home crowd, and youthful legs the Roar may just do it.

I'm sure they will....but you never know do you.

They'll have to lift to a higher level than tonight and surely Alex Brosque won't miss so many Juninho fed passes again.

Should give us another night of exciting, if mistake ridden football like tonight's game.

Friday night Football: Oh no Sydney are joint top!

Australia won't be happy tonight.

The team most fans across the country seem to hate is Sydney FC.

Record crowds always seem to come out to watch them lose. But it rarely happens. In fact they haven't lost away this season.

And after tonight's 2-0 win in Wellington before 14,000 passionate Kiwi's the rest of the Australian football community will go to their beds seething that Sydney and John Kosmina are, for 24 hours, joint leaders of the A-League.

Great improvised goals from Terry McFlynn and Alex Brosque saw them home, but it was tight for a long time.

Who will stop Sydney now?

Australians love to see Sydney FC play...just not in Sydney

or so it seems.

2007/08 season.
Adelaide v Sydney FC 25,000 record crowd
Central Coast v Sydney FC 17,500 record crowd

2006/07
Newcastle Jets v Sydney FC 24,000 record crowd
Queensland Roar v Sydney FC 32,000 record crowd
Melbourne Victory v Sydney FC 50,000 record crowd

Even when they played away at Telstra Stadium, against some unknown American side they pulled 80,000!

So maybe Sydney should announce they are playing Sydney FC this week. Can you imagine the rush for tickets at Aussie Stadium.

Mate, we hate Sydney I wanna see that lot thrashed!

Got a better idea how to get more people to a game in Sydney?

Sydney Breeze past Adelaide in front of record crowd

Another week another goal conceded for Sydney FC
Another week another game against 10 men for Sydney FC
Another week another win for Sydney FC.

But are Sydney any good...against 11 men?

The Crowd.

Absolutely fantastic to see 25,000 plus decked out in red at Adelaide Oval for football. And don't those Adelaide fans wear the colours. A great sight.

The Game.

Sydney started woeful...again. Easily outplayed last week in Gosford conceding two. In Adelaide, United were slow out of the blocks, maybe the heat, but Sydney were slower.

When Adelaide went 1 up through a Kristian Sarkies goal, Sydney were in disarray, and had been for some time.

Passes going astray from midfield. Little sight of Steve Corica or any of the forwards.

And both Tony Popovic and Mark Milligan were caught up field for the Adelaide break which Bobby Petta did his best to slow down to give the lads a chance to get back, but it didn't work as headless Chook Ruben Zadkovich collided with Clint Bolton and Sarkies slotted the loose ball

The Send-Off.

Ball over the top by Poppa, Alex Brosque caught it has to be said by Robbie Cornthwaite and the softest of soft red cards awarded by referee Matthew Breeze. It wouldn't have surprised me to see Alex Brosque get booked for milking it.

And suddenly Sydney were back in a game they had again looked second best in all night.

Game changed. Sydney slow men, Steve Corica, Poppa and Terry McFlynn were able to get more involved. The confidence of the team lifted immediately in direct proportion to the Adelaide side who seemed to lose the game in that one moment.

The future

Adelaide are gone surely, but if Bobby Petta can remain fit they may still sneak in the four. Every game is a Cup Final for them. But realistically they are out.

Sydney? Who knows? They still look ordinary very ordinary against eleven but who would bet against them.

Well I would:)

Highlights

Bobby Petta's performance. A joy in the forward line, away from the wing. Hope he stays fit.

Brendan Santalab's wonderful wonderful goal.

The red-shirted Adelaide crowd a record in South Australia and another great night to ponder for the future of our wee game in this country.

Mark Rudan or Tony Popovic? Sydney FC Loyalty?

So Mark Rudan is off to join former Sydney FC Coach Pierre Littbarski in Japan on a "lucrative" two year deal.

And I'm left wondering about Sydney FC, loyalty and the wage packet of Tony Popovic.

Sydney FC letting Rudan go is a massive loss for Sydney, the A-League and fans across the country.

Yeah good move Sydney. Replace your Captain with a Captain, only an older and slower one.

And serves you right if Poppa is injured or sent-off between now and the Grand Final. Who are you going to call on then?

The A-League has built some personality. Kevin Muscat, Matt Mackay, Ange Costanzo are just three who spring to mind.

All have been here from the start, all play passionately for their clubs. Just what we, the fans, need.

For Sydney, Mark Rudan has been my stand-out.

Left out by Littbarski early on. Returned, dignified, to become the face of Sydney FC.

Who can forget the goal he scored in the semi-final against Adelaide in season one.
Or the run only last week in the final minute to win the game for Sydney. Or his performances in the Asian Champions League.

Club Captain. A true blue. A Sydney boy.

And then Sydney buy returning Socceroo, albeit belatedly, Tony Popovic. Who after struggling for weeks is starting to look okay.

He's a lot older than Rudan. And he's shown little commitment to the cause, before his contracts across the World ran out.

Now he's Sydney through and through and Captain as well. At the expense of Rudan.

And so Rudan, who's contract runs out this year is off, to Japan on a two year deal.

Will Poppa still be playing in two years? How slow will he be? Is he so much better than Rudan? Not in the A-League, not yet, he isn't.

Loyalty from fans for a new league. Loyalty from players. Loyalty from the clubs. Everyone wants and expects loyalty.

Everyone except Sydney FC.

Rudan's contract presumably was an ordinary one given the salary cap, and probably not increased for the coming seasons.

Do you think Poppa is on less than Rudan?

Rudan should have been offered a contract for two further years, increaing his current deal, and Poppa should never have been signed.

Will Poppa play two more seasons? Unlikely, not without injuries and further enforced rests due to send-offs. Most of which will be due to his ageing legs.

I have no problem with Poppa personally. Of course, merely Sydney FC.

You let Dwight Yorke go. Littbarski. And Topor-Stanley and now Rudan.

Building loyalty takes awhile. Rudan was one who gave to the Sydney cause in bucket loads. It takes time.

The Roar away at the end of last season, Shanghai away, A-League Grand Final, were some of Rudan's great fighting performances.

His reward? Stripped of the Captaincy for Johnny Come Lately, and forced to go and play second division in Japan for two years.

Come on Sydney, for the good of the game. Lift yours.

The Australian in me started to stir..even for a friendly.

There was 80,000 plus when the teams came out for the Sydney Galaxy game, it was electric for a friendly, even on my telly:)

I'm not normally into friendlies no matter how many people, or Beckham's on show, but when the game started I just wanted Sydney to thrash Galaxy.

And I heard the Cove singing and I thought yes I know these guys. These are the ones who I listen to every week.

and the Sydney FC banner they had was brilliant, "70,000 people, we play every week."

I wanted the A-League stars to do well, to do better than well.

and then..Alex Brosque scored once and then twice. Yesssss!

Why was I cheering? It was a friendly but the Australian in me wanted, needed Sydney to do well.

And the Sydney crowd lifted, and started to cheer for Sydney FC, and then Ruben Zadkovich scored.

3-0 after 30 minutes. Not bad for a friendly. Not bad for Sydney FC, not bad for Australia.

But most of us Aussies already knew the A-League was fine. We've seen the Asian Champions League. We've seen the National Soccer League. Beating a US side even with a Beckham.

Aussies can do that, we knew that.
