Socceroos team ripped apart..and why no Asian Socceroos Pim?

Pim Verbleak, as he is becoming known across Australia, A-League Socceroo's side played a poor game last Thursday. But why didn't he select our Asian Socceroos?

True, if Tom Pondlejak had stuck it in instead of hitting the post the whole crowd would have smiled and we'd have probably won the game. Kuwait weren't that good.

But a thought. How many National teams change all their players in 2 and half years?

I'm sure you can name a few English and Italy players in the main team over the last three years. Even Tim Cahill, Harry and co still play in the main Socceroos side.

But our Socceroo A-League based team?

Last time we played Kuwait in Nov 2006 with an A-League side we won 2-0. Only Archie was in the team last Thursday from that game just two or so years ago.

Milligan, North, Carney, Dodd all missing this time.

Hence a new team, and poor performance.

Pim, needs to train the guys in Camp but even if he did during the season Milligan, Jedinak, North who were likely starters were all gone by matchday.

The Socceroos A-League team has a problem, but including the players from Asian in Asain Cup Qualifiers is surely a must.

And next time we'll be playing the full team in the ACQ. The games are on FIFA dates so we may still expect to qualify...me thinks!

Wow a Canberra Times Editorial!

When was the last time football got a Canberra Times Editorial. Soccer turnout puts A-League on front foot

Socceroos impact on Canberra

So we cracked the 20,000 mark for football in Canberra. And as many naysayers reminded me before the game this was "only the A-League Socceroos," a reference perhaps to why they wouldn't go or why we wouldn't get a crowd.

The FFA were delighted and surprised by the size of the crowd and indeed the passion from the crowd.

Does the game and size of the crowd have any implications for Canberra football, for our A-League bid?

I think it does.

Some have already said the teams performance put our bid back. Others have said what does the crowd for a Socceroos game have to do with an A-League team in Canberra.

Well it's another major step for those involved in the bid. The FFA clearly lean towards a second Melbourne and Sydney team but now with this display from Canberra and of course the strength of our bid they are faced with some serious questions.

Can they afford not to grow the game in Australia and in the Capital when the momentum is clearly there? Can they afford to turn away in their words, the best prepared bid they've ever seen?

Time will tell, we can do little more.

However what crowd do you think we will get for our very first Canberra A-League home game?
What crowd do you think we will get if we are in the A-League final series for the first time?
What crowd will we draw against Sydney FC, Melbourne Victory?

The naysayers continue to be loud and proud but mostly they are older men, pained from the memories of the dear old Cosmos.

Thursday showed it's a different time, I've been repeating it to anyone who wanted to hear.

And consider this:

The eight year old boy who had his birthday on the night. The venue was changed and they all went to the Socceroos for the party.

Or the six year old boy walking into the stadium caught up in the excitement. "How Can I be a Socceroo Mum?"

No Canberra 8 year old has ever had an opportunity to watch the Socceroos. To connect with the game they play.

And that for me is the long-term success of the Canberra A-League team. When we have six or more Canberrans running out to play against Robbie Fowler, Sydney FC or Asian Champions League Runners-Up Adelaide United there will be a great feel for the fans and we'll have our own stories.

Thursday meant it's easier to sell the dream, to the media, to the sponsors, to the whole community.

"You'll never get a crowd for football, remember the Cosmos." Well we did, we have made the jump, the rest is easier to sell I believe.

Now we just need the FFA to say, "the winner is Canberra."

And for the ever decreasing minority who choose to knock, I say, embrace the opportunity and work with us to make something happen.

The people of Canberra have spoken of their love for the game.

Did you know there were so many Socceroos tops and scarves etc in Canberra? They have been well hidden.

And the audience, men, women, children young and old for football. Just as it should be.

Another step forward for football in the region.

Match Day: Canberra. 20,000 pre-sold

Well I was 26 when I came to Australia. I was used to watching Glasgow Celtic play Juventus, Rangers, Real Madrid, Aberdeen, Dundee United and co.

I was used to standing, singing in passionate crowds of 67,000 people, sometimes more. With everyone singing in unison.

And then I came to Canberra in 1990.

So when I walk up tonight, as a football fan, I'll be thinking a little of what I've missed, the big matchday, the big crowds, the great games, the atmosphere.

But mostly like so many Canberra football people I've spoken to this week I'll probably just have a big smile on my face, dumbstruck that my city will fill the stadium for football.

Enjoy the game...I will:)

Oh and the really cx!!p thing is I've got to go into a Corporate Box. I'm so not a Corporate Box fan!!!!!!

Griffith, NSW Wine Growers will drive the 3.5 hours here and dash straight back after the game. "We have to be up picking the fruit the next day so we can't stay over, but it's our chance to see Australia play.

Clare Dunn from Broulee, "I m bringing a group of 10 football players. We just want to inspire them to see where they can go.

Southern Highlands Football Association are bringing their Acadamy boys to watch the Socceroos play live, It's part of their program to watch live football.

Cooma handed over 1,000 pledges showing A-League support they have organised a busload to come to the game.

Ticket sales update: Will we sell-out?

As of last night over 15,000 tickets sold so it will be a record for a Socceroos game in Canberra and expected to be bigger than the Brumbies crowds so far this year which is interesting.

With three days of sales to go and Canberra Stadium predicting over 4,000 fans will try and buy tickets on matchday at the gate, 20,000 plus seems guaranteed...now can we sell it out?

Don't do it buy at the gate. Get your ticket now and save the hassle. Do you want to miss the national anthems?

Although I've heard it sounds good from outside the stadium.

So 20,000 plus well done to Canberra sports fans? and that includes the 4,000 grumblebums in the queue outside

That will be one of the two FFA boxes to be ticked this week. And the other is the money at the meeting this week.

At the start of the week I was more confident about the money than the crowd so....will professional football be coming back to the Capital?

And the Wollongong bid is down the gurgler for this year I see from their local paper.

Fill the Stadium: Football on the verge in Canberra?

FFA Ben Buckley will meet the a-league4canberra consortium this week.

Speaking on ABC Grandstand today FFA CEO Ben Buckley said 15,000-20,000 will show a stong level of support for football in the region.

With ticket sales at 13,500 on Friday evening you'd think we'd go to the upper end, at least, of that target.

Get to the game. Bring anyone you can and cheer for Australia and get the A-League bid over the line.

And please get your pledge forms in ASAP and still time to join as a Foundation Member before the a-league4canberra got in. Go on, be a true believer

When was the last time a Socceroos Coach came to Canberra to announce his team?

Tuesday 24th Feb Australian Coach Pim Verbeek will announce the Socceroos team in Canberra for the Asian Cup Qualifier Australia v Kuwait March 5th to be played at Canberra Stadium

Clearly, Canberra needs a big crowd if we want more games in the Capital region.
A-League4Canberra needs a big crowd if we want more football in the region.

So get to the game this is our chance to show Australia the passion and interest we have for top level football....and the Socceroos will be back if the crowd is significant. Have no doubt about that.

Lydia Williams: Nearpost Player of the Year

At last nights Canberra United award night The Nearpost's Russ Gibbs presented the fans player of the year.

And presented with the winners trophy by Nearpost Host and Football Commentator Russ Gibbs was our inaugural winner:

Volunteers desperately needed for ANU O-Week

Ben Sakker-Kelly our a-league4canberra volunteers co-ordinator has been called away first to the Queensland floods and now to the Victorian bushfires. Need less to say he's had to drop all a-league duties. We wish him well.

We consequently have no confirmed volunteer pledge getters for O-Week at ANU.

Could you please encourage anyone at ANU in any capacity to contact me. Even if they can only do one hour, we can usually get around 50 signatures and hour and we are targeting 1,000 pledges across ANU in O-Week

Socceroos march on...but still no shots.

It's fantastic football, when you are top of the group on the way to the next World Cup.

0-0. Love it.

So I reckon we had one shot against Uzbekistan but played well. 3 points
One late late shot against Bahrain, totally outplayed 3 points.
No shots against Japan unless you count Tim Cahill's (a striker?) pass back. 1 point.

It's not pretty upfront, but defensively we are reasonably sound and thank god we come up against the ever pretty but ever toothless Japanese attack in front of goal.

Still we're on the way but the lack of depth for Emerton, Kewell and Viduka is beginning to stand out.

With any of those three on the park last night we would have created one, just one chance. That could have been enough to win the game.

For those without Fox think yourself lucky.

The crowd was awesome. It was tense. Endo showed the J-League can waltz over Adelaide in ACL finals but he's still got a way to go against the European boys.

Japan pretty to watch, pretty toothless though in front of 65,000.
Australia...tight enough in defence, miserable to watch.

And Brett Holman..the instructions were NOT to give free-kicks away out the box...guess you weren't listening Brett!

Socceroos to play in CANBERRA!

The Qantas Socceroos will face Kuwait in their first home match of the AFC Asian Cup 2011 qualification stage, presented by FOXTEL, at Canberra Stadium on Thursday 5 March 2009 (kick-off 8pm AEDT).

"This is a great opportunity for the people of Canberra to support the Qantas Socceroos in an important Asian Cup qualifier, and also to demonstrate the strength of their football support," said FFA Chief Commercial Officer, John O'Sullivan.

The Qantas Socceroos have been drawn in Group B of the AFC Asian Cup 2011 qualification stage along with Indonesia, Kuwait and Oman. The top two teams from each group of the qualification stage will progress to the AFC Asian Cup 2011 which will be held in Qatar.

ACT Chief Minister, Jon Stanhope, welcomed the decision to have the Qantas Socceroos play this important match in the nation's capital.

“This match will be a highlight of the 2009 Sporting calendar in Canberra,” Mr Stanhope said.

“The Qantas Socceroos have captured the imagination of the Australian public and it’s now our turn to show our support. I’d encourage everyone to attend what will be a high quality game of international football and demonstrate to the FFA the strong following that football has in Canberra and the region”.

Australia’s match schedule for qualification stage of the AFC Asian Cup 2011 involves:

§ 28 January 2009, Indonesia v Australia, Gelong Bung Karno Stadium, Jakarta, Indonesia
§ 5 March 2009, Australia v Kuwait, Canberra Stadium, Canberra, Australia
§ 14 November 2009, Australia v Oman, Venue TBA, Australia
§ 18 November 2009, Oman v Australia, Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex, Muscat, Oman
§ 6 January 2010, Kuwait v Australia, International Jaber Al-Ahmad Stadium, Kuwait City, Kuwait
§ 3 March 2010, Australia v Indonesia, Venue TBA, Australia

Australia needs to finish in the top two places of Group B to qualify for the AFC Asian Cup 2011 at the end of this round.

The last time the Socceroos played an international in Canberra was an Oceania Cup match on 1 November 1996 where Australia defeated Tahiti 5-0 in front of crowd of 9,421. The match was also the 84th and final international appearance for the long standing captain and striker Paul Wade. Current Canberra United Westfield W-League coach Robbie Hooker scored the opening goal of the match in the 11th minute.

Tickets for the match will go on sale to the Football Family from 9am (AEDT) Thursday 22 January and to the general public from 9am (AEDT) Friday 23 January from all Ticketek agencies, online and by phone.

Canberra A-League: It's do or die in February?

The FFA will meet Ivan Slavich and Millissa Fischer at the end of Feb.

We need 20,000 signatures by then, we have 6,500 already. This is our HUGE chance to get an A-League team...and before Western Sydney get their act together..we could well be in.

1. Volunteer to collect signatures at the Canberra Centre, Bundah Street entrance from 11AM-1PM or as long as you can do, either Saturday or Sunday next weekend. Email me if you’re keen to come

2. Volunteer to collect signatures at a junior club registration day (email me and I'll send you club rego dates). This is a huge opportunity to get more signatures so send me an email if you can do a particular day.

3. Forward the chain email I’ve written (below) to your networks. Even if you’re unable to come out and assist in person, this would be a huge help as its just as easy for people to sign up online and the quicker the email gets circulating, the better.

Thanks to everyone who has helped out so far – you’ve ensured that the numbers keep ticking over for the signatures and we’re already over 6,000!

Queensland Roar early in first final.

Queenland powered to a 2-0 and wrapped up the inaugural Grand Final early.

Goals from Lana Harch and Tameka Butt gave the classy Roar the edge and there was no way back for Canberra.

Alicia Ferguson was injured for the Roar and this allowed the pacy Ellen Beaumont a start and she sped past Rhian Davies in the sixth minute. Her cross bounced back off the bar and in the confusion Harch slotted it home.

Thea Slatyer was clearly fouled but sometimes you just have the luck. And today proved to be just that sort of day for Canberra.

If that goal was perhaps questionable the second from Tameka Butt was pure class. A delicious strike from the edge of the box and 2-0.

Canberra were stunned.

Amy Chapman was not at her best, an injury taking it's toll? Caitlin Munoz a little out of touch. But Queensland didn't care. They hassled and chased and when they got the ball they worked it well, releasing their pacy forwards at every opportunity.

United were penned back and the midfield was too far away from the forwards to make an impact. Similar to last week only this time United were behind.

Should Ashleigh Sykes have started? Did they need Grace Gill in centre-midfield? Hindsight is a wonderful thing.

Queensland passed the ball better, Lauren Colthorpe, Ellen Kellond-Knight and Tameka Butt controlled the midfield and upfront the Canberra defence was continually tested.

How many of them will be in the Matildas squad?

Sasha McDonnell worked hard but was isolated too often to make any real impact.

Coach Robbie Hooker changed things at half-time and he had to. It was a Grand Final after all.

And if 2-0 is the most dangerous lead in football you always thought if Canberra got one then maybe just maybe. Remember Iran!

But the Roar stood firm. Canberra lifted the intensity, pushed more and more players forward. Kate McShea and Claire Polkingthorne were invincible...all game, maybe all season.

Courtney Beutal would have impressed Matildas Coach Tom Sermanni. Casey Dumont also.

Finals can pass you by quickly and this seemed to pass United. A half chance here, an Ashleigh Sykes goal ruled offside, a Munoz shot blasted wide but only the green-eyed could see a goal coming. I could but It didn't:)

Over 5,000 fans. Chanting and colour from the crowd. A large away support. And sponsors thanked after the game. The new football.

FFA CEO Ben Buckley presented Lana Harch the player of the match award in full suit but no tie!

Football in on Australia on the rise again, today it was the Women's turn and Canberra played on the National stage in a National final.

A great season, a great journey and we'll all be back for more next year.

Well done to Queensland; and Canberra of course.

Pride swells when Canberra line-up. We'll have the National Anthem won't we? Tear when camera goes past Caitlin and Chappy and go.

Sweat like crazy during game, kick every ball, every ball.

Hit the roof and act like a prized prat when Caitlin scores. Watch daughter staring.

Get used to this Kofi!

His goal attracted attention, then his smile, now his abs...and I'm not talking about the Sydney Coach John Kosmina.

Canberra not only produces wonderful footballers it clearly produces wonderful bodies:)

Don't all Canberrans you know look like that!

Kofi could probably make more money from modelling than football..in hthe short-term.
Either way I wish him well, with the sort of scrutiny and comments he's been getting this week he'll need all the luck in the world.
