Canberra's Shaun Ontong signs for Adelaide United

Another Canberra footballer makes the breakthrough.

Sports Australia.com are reporting that Adelaide United have signed another Canberran, Shaun Ontong, for the coming A-League season.

Ontong, who has also captained the Australian Under 17 team, is a quick, tenacious and disciplined player who is extremely versatile and able to play as a midfielder or wide defender. The 20 year old from Canberra has made 20 appearances for the Young Socceroos and is thrilled to have signed with The Reds.

“It’s unbelievable and a dream come true for me. It has been a long time coming and I have been working very hard to get this opportunity and am very grateful to Adelaide United,” Ontong said.

“I will grab this opportunity with both hands. I have been watching Adelaide United in the Hyundai A-League, I like the way they play and am looking forward to being part of the club’s continued success.”

Ontong could not have joined a better club. An exciting young side Adelaide also have vital experience in Paul Agostino, Ange Costanzo and Bobby Petta.

If Shaun is anything like his Dad, Paul Ontong, he will be some player!

I remember Paul Ontong playing for Brisbane Lions in the old National Soccer League. What a skilled, honest and team player he was. Did he ever play for the Socceroos? He should have in my humble opinion.

Paul played for Belwest Foxes Soccer Club from Under 7's until Under 18 Div 1 - it always seems strange that when players are picked up for Acadamy - ACT and AIS that the Junior Clubs they played for ARE NEVER MENTIONED.

Totally agree, if we are trying to inform people about our game, and where our players come from, making the link between our junior clubs and senior stars is something we need to do much more regularly

This is something Union and other codes have done better in the past.

It's an important point you make

cheers
