Did you see what Nicky Carle did on Saturday night against Uruguay. Therre was one minute on the clock. He was in the box, in a fantastic position with room for across.

Australia were 2-1 down and instead of kicking it with his right foot he tired to put his left foot behind and do a fancy dan kick. He tripped and fell flat on his face tapping the ball out for a goal kick.

Carle had been wonderful since coming on. His touches were superb and effective. Recently players, confusing the opposition. You even felt we might equalise.

The A-Leagues player of the year gave Australia a different dimension in attack…and then his miskick.

“That’s ridiculous,” said Fox Sports Simon Hill.

Did Nicky Carle’s chances of making the Asia Cup squad disappear with that attempt at unnecessary flamboyance?
