Young Matildas win...no news on appeal!
From AFC site, Australia defeated Myanmar 2-1 in the AFC U-19 Women's Championship yesterday.
CHONGQING: Australia defeated Myanmar 2-1 and managed to avoid the wooden spoon in Group A of the AFC U-19 Women’s Championship here at the Datianwan Stadium on Wednesday.
It was not easy going for the Young Matilidas as they found themselves trailing to a 32nd minute goal by Myanmar’s Mu Mu Lwin. Ashleigh Connor equalized the very next minute and the deciding goal was hit by Kyah Simon in the 54th minute.
Despite the driving rain, the two teams played hard with quick counterattacks employed aggressively.
The Aussies, whose senior team are Asian runners-up, return home empty-handed after narrow defeats to Japan (1-0) and DPR Korea (2-1).
Coach Alen Stajcic said: “Today we played hard under the difficult circumstances but there should have been more goals and we didn’t seize our chances.”
His Myanmarese counterpart Win Myint Thwin declared his satisfaction with the result. “We played hard today but the Australians are physically stronger than us and they have better skills in controlling the ball. I am satisfied with the scoreline.”
World champions DPR Korea, who thrashed Japan 3-1 in the other group game, lead the group with nine points, and meet in the semifinal hosts and defending champions Chjna in a repeat of last year’s final.
Japan who finished second play Group B toppers Korea Republic in the other last four encounter. Both the matches take place on October 13.
