Capital Football Girls Program - Is there one?

So where have you been!

You've seen the Capital Football report on communication and it's not pretty is it! The Girls program despite having the wonderful leadership of Canberra United is clearly in disarray.

Hardly worthy of the name High Performance is it.

The girls and there are many of them, the girls and their parents deserve better. Compared to swimming or golf elite programs around Canberra we're way way behind and then some! How else can you explain a Representative loss of 12 - 0 in the recent National Championships.

How else can you explain a Representative loss of 12 - 0 in the recent National Championships. Girls playing at the first Nationals - only training with the squad for six weeks - well what else did anyone expect against a squad of NSW girls in rep programs for at least three years!!!

Former Capital Football TD Royston Thomas wouldn't listen and yes I discussed the girls program with him on many many occasions.

And our current version is so much poorer than previous versions.

Capital Football has a new TD Warren Grieve, having seen his sides play, listened to him speak I have every confidence the Girls program can be restored maybe even go to higher levels than previous.

Surely there is a role for clubs from U9 to U12. Clubs  can should be  preparing quality players in bigger numbers but clearly they need better guidance on what techniques to focus on - but why bother if they are walking into the current set-up. They are not improving.

Just look at the U14 preparations and their results. And yes I know results aren't everything but they do provide at 12-0 a guide don't they?

My question is - despite all the FFA Curriculum over the last few years, the excellent performances of our previous U13 Girls teams at Nationals why is the program in such disarray.

Too easy to blame the previous TD, too easy to say it will be sorted now. It's 2012 and the girls football program in the ACT is currently - below ACTAS level - a disaster.

Capital Football has heard the complaints over the last 9 months but has refused to do anything. We've got thousands of players, lots of coaches in many clubs - some very technical, some very enthusiastic.

If you can't get two or three coaches to run a quality program - maybe it's tiime to change your model and reach out to the clubs.

Clearly Capital Football cannot deliver a quality High Performance program for girls.

Prove to me it can! I'm all ears.

Another abysmal failure by Capital Football. All ACT teams will be in pool B next year. The boys teams were average at best in pool B last year and now the girls will be joining them. Where has it gone wrong? Only a few years ago both our girls and boys were regularly finishing in the top places, we had a number of boys selected in AIS and Joeys and girls selected in Young Matildas and Canberra United. Unfortunately none of the people involved in those successes are involved today and it shows.

It boggles the mind that the same people in charge of the disastrous under 13 girls campaign earlier in the year were given the under 14 team as well. And before this year myself and others who I’ve spoken to had never heard of the under 15 coach. You would think that years of PL or junior div 1 coaching would be required to be given a head coach position at the nationals.

I hate to say it but maybe it’s a good thing the boys are already in pool B. At least they will be spared the disappointment and embarrassment of being flogged by the metro teams.

Hi Eamonn,

I'm going to overlook the glaring grammatical and structural errors in this blog and head straight to what i believe is the most ill informed and ignorant 'report' I've read in a very long time.

I have been involved in Capital Footballs Women's programs for over 10 year, including; Development squads, TDP, ACTAS and Canberra United and I have absolutely no idea who you are, which for one, tells me that you actually have no involvement in Women's Football at any for of elite level.

If that isn't enough to completely discount this ridiculous post i'll flatter you and 'JJ' and explain why this is such a load on incessant dribble.

For instance, if you actually did any research or had any references for anything you are stating you might know that the under 14s squad lost their starting number 9 (that's a centre forward) on the first day of play. It may also be worth mentioning that this particular game was the 5th game in 5 days for the squad. I'm not sure if you've ever been involved in sport, so perhaps this has escaped you, but generally speaking, the best performances don't happen on the last day of a tournament. If you need me to explain the psychological and physiological reasons why i'd be more than happy to educate you.

Secondly, i'm sorry to say this, but Canberra does not have the same vast number of player to choose from as all of the other states do. Essentially this means that no matter how great the coaches we recruit and no matter how much effort is put into every single training session and every single player, it makes no difference if the players don't have the ability to retain, practice, and use this information in a game setting.

This isn't to say that Canberra isn't capable of producing great players; it just means that we can't produce 16 of them in each age group each year. A coach can only do so much with a player that doesn't actually have the capabilities to play representative football.

It may also be worth responding to your comment; 'the ACT is currently - below ACTAS level - a disaster'.
Again, i'm not sure how much research you actually did, but the under 15's (aka ACTAS) squad didn't win a single game either.

It's not the High Performance Program or the coaches that are the problem - it's the number of quality players in Canberra and people such as yourself filling these kids heads with ideas that they are better than what they are and that it's all Capital Footballs fault they lose games.

Defence!

I haven't filled any heads with expectations.

You've completely misunderstood what I've written.

Not sure your response is very helpful to the debate.

Are you saying the current program is High Performance for U9 - U13 inclusive?
