Canberra Women: Monday 28th July

Football in Canberra is set to take it's first major step forward in many many years at Senior level. Finally we get to play on the National stage, and take advantage of the game's growth and indeed our move into Asia.

What opportunities for our girls and women to play in a National League? Fantastic.

It is expected Canberra will have a team in the 8 team televised national W-league starting in October. Monday 28th July is Announcement day.

With the winners expected to play against the women of the Japanese J-League the future is looking brighter by the day. And an A-League side would secure Canberra's football future very nicely.

Strongly doubt we have the players to field a competitive squad!

Our women's league is about the standard of sydney super league or less.( that is one below thier prmier league). Trust me I play in super league and have played in ACT

Who would be the coach?

It would have to be considered that the canberra squad would include some out of state players from neighbouring institute squads.. so that the competition as a whole would be strenghtened.

I think we would be competive. If there are 8 teams I'd fancy our chances over Victory, Adelaide West Asutralian maybe even the Jets. Only Queensland and Sydney would expect to beat us.

Caitlin Munoz, Amy Chapman, Lydia Williams, Grace Gill, Nicole Somi, could form the back bone of the side.

With one or two interstate players one or two overseas players and the Sykes twins from Dubbo and a couple or more from our ACTAS squad...we're talking competitive..

Coach well...Robbie Hooker has the front running I reckon but should be up for grabs for anyone to throw their hat in the ring surely everyone would agree to that...

but Chris Tanzey, Clive Mackillop or a women!!! now there's a thought!!! And about time too I reckon.

I say give it to the best female Coach..either in Canberra or beyond.

Don't under rate WA. Current Aus U/17 Champions at least 3 YMs plus McCallum and De Vanna the 2 best Australian players.

How can the backbone you have described compete with a QLD unit that has at least 13 matildas plus a lot of YMs. (Somi a good player but not identified beyond YM level.)

Sydney has at least 7 matildas, the bulk of the current YM squad and quite a few in the Promising Matildas.

Big ask to expect Sykes twins to step up to this level for ACT. Have yet to make the YMs. One training camp with the Matildas does not make a National league player.

We will seriously need some imports otherwise it will become a farce.

Sykes may be fast but it takes more than that to comepte at the top level.

ok Anon, I won't under-rate WA..fair point...and I didn't say we'd beat Sydney or Queensland, blind freddy recognises their strength and numbers.

But they can only play 11 or so and there will be many who will miss out..who could conceivably come to Canberra to play.

Will an ex-Matilda be chosen for Sydney over an incumbent. Both will want to play in the inaugural comp I would think.

A farce? Well sure there may be some blow-outs...but if we win more than we lose in a National Comp it's no farce.

Besides any poor results will quickly shock us into looking at our player development pool and imported players in coming years, won't it:)

That said I see little reason why all other teams can't be beatable..with a couple of imports (2) and a couple of overseas players (2) added to our players mentioned and you might add trialling Young Maildas Chrissy Walters and Bronwyn Studman to our list..and I'm sure one or two more who I don't know.

I never said we'd win it, just I'm a little more positive that Anon on here.

We're not even officially in yet, gives us some room for optimism.....

Sykes twins play Super League in Sydney. May struggle against the better Premier League teams so not ready for this level yet.

whoever this anonymous person is- where is your compassion and love for the game? these girls play their hearts out and are quite frankly-very good at what they do-they are finally given a chance to play in a national league and youre just putting them down?
Yes sydney and QLD have the majority of the matildas but canberra has the rest of them and some youth matildas who are all highly skilled players. They have a very good chance at excelling in this league and canberra should get behind these girls and support our nations capital!

The 'rest of ' the Matildas is 3!! 2 field (and one of this originates from NSW)and a GK. It is not disloyal or uncmpassionate to be a realist. All I am saying is that the small demographic of Canberra will not be able to supply the players that are up to the standard without drawing heavily from outside sources and those sources will be other states rejects.

some people would debate whether your point of view is "realism"-the reality of the matter is that although canbera may be small,it has players such as Amy Chapman,Caitlin munoz,Lydia williams and Grace Gill-who are all undoubtedly great players..even if canberra doesn't win this competitin-it will provide the best experience possible for the girls to become even better-how can you be the best if you dont compete with the best?show some canberra spirit-besides-nobody likes a negative nancy :)

It's a good thing that we're a part of this league whichever way you look at it.
The problem with Women's football in the ACT, in recent times at least, is that there is so much focus on the elite squads and so little on the clubs and leagues, that the gap between the best dozen players and the rest is enormous.
